It’s no secret that we love our romance books with a paranormal twist. Whether it’s a red hot paranormal romance with a fanged and broody hero, or an action packed urban fantasy with a shifter warrior by our side. But, as it’s the Halloween season we wanted to talk about a figure that is synonymous with the holiday; witches. However, the witches we are talking about aren’t the manically cackling black garbed and green skinned old ladies with an unfortunate wart problem. Instead, our witches are powerful female figures who use their magic to save the day and the get the guy!

Witch books, what the hag?

Witch books? What even is that? Who wants a romance book where you fall in love with a warty old hag who likes to sprinkle eye of newt in her morning coffee? Well, lets take the patriarchy out of the equation and take a (very brief) look at witches.

The history of witches is long and fascinating, and dark. Very very dark. Especially if you’re the witch. It also fluctuates from culture to culture. However, quite often it has one thing in common: it was a way to persecute women, especially those who lived on the outskirts of society. That is a sweeping generalisation of course, and in Scandinavian countries there were slightly more males accused of witchcraft than female.

The Witch’s Heart
by Genevieve Gornichec

When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology.

Angrboda’s story begins where most witches’ tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

Their union produces three unusual children, each with a secret destiny, who Angrboda is keen to raise at the edge of the world, safely hidden from Odin’s all-seeing eye. But as Angrboda slowly recovers her prophetic powers, she learns that her blissful life—and possibly all of existence—is in danger.

With help from the fierce huntress Skadi, with whom she shares a growing bond, Angrboda must choose whether she’ll accept the fate that she’s foreseen for her beloved family…or rise to remake their future. From the most ancient of tales this novel forges a story of love, loss, and hope for the modern age.

Except nothing is simple at all.

Ursa is playing at games I can only begin to comprehend. And Alaric? The man I thought I loved might be just as much a villain as the woman I can’t help but be drawn to.

Dead Witch Walking

Series: The Hollows #1

read this is you want:

If there was ever a witch that needed to struggle to come into her full potential, it’s Rachel Morgan from The Hollows series. She starts the series without really knowing her true power and armed with just a desire for doing good.  It takes some time for her to understand things aren’t as black and white as she’s always thought and sometimes to do good, you have to taint yourself with some bad.  The growth Rachel shows throughout the series is one of the things that make endears her to me.  That, and the fact she is still a hot mess. If you like heroines to be perfectly imperfect then Rachel is your witch. She’s just as much fun as she is badass.

All the creatures of the night gather in “the Hollows” of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party . . . and to feed.

Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining—and it’s Rachel Morgan’s job to keep that world civilized.

A bounty hunter and a witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she’ll bring ’em back alive, dead . . . or undead.

Iron and Magic
by Ilona Andrews

Series: Iron Covenant #1

read this is you want:

Elara aka the White Warlock. She leads a rag tag group of people, all with their own magical capabilities and all view her as a mixture of their leader and their goddess. To keep them safe she has made a deal with the devil aka Hugh D’Ambray, Preceptor of the Iron Dogs and all round ruthless Warlord. That’s when we watch the sparks fly as these two powerful individuals try to work together to keep themselves and their people safe.

I loved Elara, she’s powerful, smart and ruthlessly loyal to her people, if you are after a strong female protagonist Elara is perfect. But, what is really fantastic about this book is the interplay between Hugh and Elara. Both are used to being in-charge and their mixture of dislike and attraction that grows into respect and more is enthralling to read. If you want an enemies to lovers story between two alphas…this is for you!

No day is ordinary in a world where Technology and Magic compete for supremacy…But no matter which force is winning, in the apocalypse, a sword will always work.

Hugh d’Ambray…

Hugh d’Ambray, Preceptor of the Iron Dogs, Warlord of the Builder of Towers, served only one man. Now his immortal, nearly omnipotent master has cast him aside. Hugh is a shadow of the warrior he was, but when he learns that the Iron Dogs, soldiers who would follow him anywhere, are being hunted down and murdered, he must make a choice: to fade away or to be the leader he was born to be. Hugh knows he must carve a new place for himself and his people, but they have no money, no shelter, and no food, and the necromancers are coming. Fast.

Elara Harper…

Elara Harper is a creature who should not exist. Her enemies call her Abomination; her people call her White Lady. Tasked with their protection, she’s trapped between the magical heavyweights about to collide and plunge the state of Kentucky into a war that humans have no power to stop. Desperate to shield her people and their simple way of life, she would accept help from the devil himself—and Hugh d’Ambray might qualify.

Hugh needs a base, Elara needs soldiers. Both are infamous for betraying their allies, so how can they create a believable alliance to meet the challenge of their enemies?

As the prophet says: “It is better to marry than to burn.”

Hugh and Elara may do both.

Dime Store Magic
by Kelley Armstrong

Series: Women of the Otherworld #3

read this is you want:

If you haven’t read the Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong then you’re missing out. This is a fantastic mix of urban fantasy and paranormal romance and contains a plethora of paranormal creatures, including witches.

Paige is a witch, the head of the leader of the American Covens, at least in name. All the other witches believe that she’s too young, wild and inexperienced to lead them. However, Paige is determined to drag them into this century. What I love about Paige is that although she isn’t the most powerful witch in this series, her curiosity and fierce loyalty still make her a formidable foe. She also had one of my favourite romances in the series, everyone talks about Clay, but Lucas’ quiet confidence steals the show for me.

Paige Winterbourne was always either too young or too rebellious to succeed her mother as leader of one of the world’s most powerful elite organizations- the American Coven of Witches. Now that she is twenty-three and her mother is dead, the Elders can no longer deny her. But even Paige’s wildest antics can’t hold a candle to those of her new charge- an orphan who is all too willing to use her budding powers for evil… and evil is all too willing to claim her.

For this girl is being pursued by a dark faction of the supernatural underworld. They are a vicious group who will do anything to woo the young, malleable, and extremely powerful neophyte, including commit murder- and frame Paige for the crime. It’s an initiation into adulthood, womanhood, and the brutal side of magic that Paige will have to do everything within her power to make sure they both survive.

A curvy librarian looking to start a family, a clan of gargoyles, and the deception that starts it all.

My family has always found me lacking. From the way I dress, how I look, to the type of magic I have. My family name is full of pomp and prestige, and I want nothing to do with it.
I’m a witch that knows how to set a goal and I have one in mind.

I want a real family.

Dating is a travesty. All the suitors I meet are looking for a connection to the family name I left behind. I need help.
Enter the matchmaker. It seems too good to be true that I can give her the list of traits I want in a partner and have my deepest desire answered, but I’m out of options.

Love comes along in the most unexpected ways.

From the very first moment I meet Elliot Bramblewick, I have hope. But he’s tricky.
I’m not expecting him to be hiding two other mates. Mates who are as alarmed and intrigued by my presence as I am by theirs.
He thinks I’m a perfect fit for them, but can I open my heart and discard my list long enough to see if this is the family I’m looking for?

None of my lists and plans prepared me for being courted by three gargoyles.

She didn’t expect to cross paths with a sexy-as-sin man, straight out of a movie scene.

Jonas Morley isn’t like the other residents of Hallows End. He knows the town’s secrets, as well as Salem’s, and it has been his honor and duty to protect them for as long as he can remember. But the gorgeous witch who graces the town’s hidden border shakes him and makes him second-guess his directive. She calls to him like no other. But can he save his home and those under his care and still make her his? Or will their union mean danger and destruction for not only them but also those who live within the town’s borders?

Curses don’t discriminate, and the curse of the blood moon is the most determined and dangerous of all.

Series: Baba Yaga #1

Known as the wicked witch of Russian fairy tales, Baba Yaga is not one woman, but rather a title carried by a chosen few. They keep the balance of nature and guard the borders of our world, but don’t make the mistake of crossing one of them…

Older than she looks and powerful beyond measure, Barbara Yager no longer has much in common with the mortal life she left behind long ago. Posing as an herbalist and researcher, she travels the country with her faithful (mostly) dragon-turned-dog in an enchanted Airstream, fulfilling her duties as a Baba Yaga and avoiding any possibility of human attachment.

But when she is summoned to find a missing child, Barbara suddenly finds herself caught up in a web of deceit and an unexpected attraction to the charming but frustrating Sheriff Liam McClellan.

Now, as Barbara fights both human enemies and Otherworld creatures to save the lives of three innocent children, she discovers that her most difficult battle may be with her own heart…

About a Dragon
by G.A. Aiken

Series: Dragon Kin #2

read this is you want:

Looking for a fantasy book, but you want something fun, that going to make you laugh. Welp, I have found the series for you. In the second book in the series we meet Talaith, our witch heroine. She’s the type of heroine who takes no shit from anyone, Talaith is about to become your BFF. This series is full of larger than life charismatic characters, like the adorably arrogant dragon heroes. But Talaith manages to stand out by being a complete bad ass witch and is the tamer of one of the most obliviously arrogant (and hilarious) and self centred heroes I’ve ever read.

For Nolwenn witch Talaith, a bad day begins with being dragged from bed by an angry mob intent on her crispy end and culminates in rescue by—wait for it—a silver-maned dragon. Existence as a hated outcast is nothing new for a woman with such powerful secrets. The dragon, though? A tad unusual. This one has a human form to die for—and knows it. According to dragon law, Talaith is now his property, for pleasure . . . or otherwise. But if Lord Arrogance thinks she’s the kind of damsel to acquiesce without a word, he’s in for a surprise . . .

Is the woman never silent? Briec the Mighty knew the moment he laid eyes on Talaith that she would be his, but he’d counted on tongue-lashings of an altogether different sort. It’s embarrassing, really, that it isn’t this outspoken female’s magicks that have the realm’s greatest dragon in her thrall. No, Briec has been spellbound by something altogether different—and if he doesn’t tread carefully, what he doesn’t know about human women could well be the undoing of his entire race . . .

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules…with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos pretending to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

But someone does. An unexpected message arrives, begging her to travel to the remote and mysterious Nowhere House to teach three young witches how to control their magic. It breaks all of the rules, but Mika goes anyway, and is immediately tangled up in the lives and secrets of not only her three charges, but also an absent archaeologist, a retired actor, two long-suffering caretakers, and…Jamie. The handsome and prickly librarian of Nowhere House would do anything to protect the children, and as far as he’s concerned, a stranger like Mika is a threat. An irritatingly appealing threat.

Series: The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Magic #1

read this is you want:

There are plenty of gritty and dark witchy reads, but sometimes you just want to put the doom and gloom behind you and have some fun. Enter Ivy Wilde from Helen Harper’s series The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Magic. Ivy is my kind of heroine… she prefers a chocolate biscuit (or four) and a good lounge in front of the TV rather than racing around trying to save the day. Unfortunately, our laid back, but powerful heroine gets dragged into solving murders and saving the day far too often for her liking. So I highly recommend this series it is a light-hearted and romantic urban fantasy with a unique heroine.

To make one thing clear: Ivy Wilde is not a heroine.

Actually, she is the very last witch in the world to be called if you need magical support. If it were up to Ivy herself, she would like to hang out on the couch all day, watch series, munch junk food and have arguments with her cat. But due to a bureaucratic mistake, Ivy becomes a victim of a reversed identity and involuntarily – very, very involuntarily! – hurled right into the Arcane Branch, the investigative agency of the Holy Order of Magical Enlightenment.

Ivy’s problems quickly quadruple when a valuable object was stolen and she was forced to work with Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter. Raphael’s sapphire-blue eyes somehow make butterflies flutter in Ivy’s stomach, but the adeptus actually shows everything that Ivy deeply rejects: the joyless pitfalls of too much stoic witchcraft. And the longer Raphael Ivy sucks, the greater your desire … to turn him into a frog!

Series: The Witches of Thistle Grover #1

Emmy Harlow is a witch but not a very powerful one—in part because she hasn’t been home to the magical town of Thistle Grove in years. Her self-imposed exile has a lot to do with a complicated family history and a desire to forge her own way in the world, and only the very tiniest bit to do with Gareth Blackmoore, heir to the most powerful magical family in town and casual breaker of hearts and destroyer of dreams.

But when a spellcasting tournament that her family serves as arbiters for approaches, it turns out the pull of tradition (or the truly impressive parental guilt trip that comes with it) is strong enough to bring Emmy back. She’s determined to do her familial duty; spend some quality time with her best friend, Linden Thorn; and get back to her real life in Chicago.

On her first night home, Emmy runs into Talia Avramov—an all-around badass adept in the darker magical arts—who is fresh off a bad breakup . . . with Gareth Blackmoore. Talia had let herself be charmed, only to discover that Gareth was also seeing Linden—unbeknownst to either of them. And now she and Linden want revenge. Only one question stands: Is Emmy in?

Are you ready for a hysterically funny witch and wolf pairing? If you’re in the mood for a good paranormal romantic comedy, THIS is the book. That’s it. The heroine has to work on breaking a curse the hero has. He can’t shift and his wolf is more on the surface in his mind. Meaning he can actually talk to him. And he’s very particular about what he wants.

What’s the worst thing that can happen to a werewolf? Unable to shift for three months, Mateo Cruz knows all too well. His wolf has taken up residence in his head, taunting him night and day with vividly violent and carnal thoughts. Convinced he’s cursed, he needs the help of a powerful witch before he literally goes insane.

Evie Savoie has always obeyed the house rules of her coven — no werewolves. They’re known for being moody and volatile. So, when a distempered, dangerous werewolf strolls into the bar and almost strangles one of her late-night customers, she’s ready to bounce him through the door. But the desperation in his eyes when he begs her to help him softens her heart and convinces her to bend the rules.

What Evie doesn’t know is that Mateo’s wolf has a mind of his own. And now that she’s in his sights, he wants only one thing. Her.

A Letter to Three Witches
by Elizabeth Bass

read this is you want:

For a light read to brighten up what can be a very dreary season this could be the witch romance for you. Especially as it was a mix of small town mystery and contemporary romance. If you are fans (and who isn’t?!) of The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling as well as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, then you’re going to love A Letter to Three Witches.

Nearly a century ago, Gwen Engel’s great-great-grandfather cast a spell with catastrophic side-effects. As a result, the Grand Council of Witches forbade his descendants from practicing witchcraft. The Council even planted anonymous snitches called Watchers in the community to report any errant spellcasting…

Yet magic may still be alive and not so well in Zenobia. Gwen and her cousins, Trudy and Milo, receive a letter from Gwen’s adopted sister, Tannith, informing them that she’s bewitched one of their partners and will run away with him at the end of the week. While Gwen frets about whether to trust her scientist boyfriend, currently out of town on a beetle-studying trip, she’s worried that local grad student Jeremy is secretly a Watcher doing his own research.

Cousin Trudy is so stressed that she accidentally enchants her cupcakes, creating havoc among her bakery customers—and in her marriage. Perhaps it’s time the family took back control and figured out how to harness their powers. How else can Gwen decide whether her growing feelings for Jeremy are real—or the result of too many of Trudy’s cupcakes?

When Wishes Bleed
by Casey L. Bond

One Prince One Witch One Fate.

The upheaval in my life began the moment a prince stumbled into my house and asked me to read his fortune. Any other night, I might have made an excuse to get him to leave, but this was no normal visit. My fingers prickled to touch him. So, I granted his request by handing him a single wishbone. When he snapped it, the wish … bled.

Hearing me suck in a shocked breath, he asked what it meant. Such an ominous omen could only mean one thing: his death was imminent. Fate revealed that he wouldn’t die of natural causes. Someone wanted him dead. Stunned by the revelation, the man I now knew as Prince Tauren disappeared into a night I feared he wouldn’t survive.

The following day, I received an invitation to the castle. While it seemed the prince believed I could intervene and uncover who was plotting his death, his motives didn’t stop there. I was being summoned to join twelve other women in vying for the opportunity to be his wife and future queen. Going could mean jeopardizing my plans to reclaim my heritage and resurrect the House of Fate. But staying would guarantee Tauren’s death, and the blood of his wish would be on my hands.

If you like a bit of horror in your witch books…well I’ve something for you. Certainly, this dark fantasy was intense, with grotesque imagery and an oppressive and down right terrifying atmosphere. Especially if you are female. This is a book you can really immerse yourself in and sink your teeth into it’s feminist themes and commentary on racial politics. However, underlying themes aside…the nail biting story and the well crafted atmosphere is enough to keep you gripped right to the bloody end.

A young woman living in a rigid, puritanical society discovers dark powers within herself in this stunning, feminist fantasy debut.

In the lands of Bethel, where the Prophet’s word is law, Immanuelle Moore’s very existence is blasphemy. Her mother’s union with an outsider of a different race cast her once-proud family into disgrace, so Immanuelle does her best to worship the Father, follow Holy Protocol, and lead a life of submission, devotion, and absolute conformity, like all the other women in the settlement.

But a mishap lures her into the forbidden Darkwood surrounding Bethel, where the first prophet once chased and killed four powerful witches. Their spirits are still lurking there, and they bestow a gift on Immanuelle: the journal of her dead mother, who Immanuelle is shocked to learn once sought sanctuary in the wood.

Fascinated by the secrets in the diary, Immanuelle finds herself struggling to understand how her mother could have consorted with the witches. But when she begins to learn grim truths about the Church and its history, she realizes the true threat to Bethel is its own darkness. And she starts to understand that if Bethel is to change, it must begin with her.

And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn’t endorse the locals’ belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she’ll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won’t rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.

A Witch in Time
by Constance Sayers

A young woman in Belle Epoque France is cursed to relive a doomed love affair through many lifetimes, as both troubled muse and frustrated artist.

In 1895, sixteen-year-old Juliet LaCompte has a passionate, doomed romance with the married Parisian painter Auguste Marchant. When her mother — a witch — botches a curse on Marchant, she unwittingly binds Juliet to the artist through time, damning her to re-live her affair and die tragically young lifetime after lifetime as the star-crossed lovers reincarnate through history.

Luke Varner, the worldly demon tasked with maintaining this badly crafted curse, has been helplessly in love with his charge, in all her reincarnations, since 19th century France. He’s in love with Nora, a silver screen starlet in 1930s Hollywood. He’s in love with Sandra, a struggling musician in 1970s Los Angeles. And he’s in love with Helen, a magazine exec in present-day DC who has the power to “suggest” others do her bidding.

In this life, Helen starts to recall the curse and her tragic previous lives. But this time, she might have the power to break the cycle…

The Witches of New York
by Ami McKay

Series: Witches of New York #1

The year is 1880. Two hundred years after the trials in Salem, Adelaide Thom (‘Moth’ from The Virgin Cure) has left her life in the sideshow to open a tea shop with another young woman who feels it’s finally safe enough to describe herself as a witch: a former medical student and “gardien de sorts” (keeper of spells), Eleanor St. Clair. Together they cater to Manhattan’s high society ladies, specializing in cures, palmistry and potions–and in guarding the secrets of their clients.

All is well until one bright September afternoon, when an enchanting young woman named Beatrice Dunn arrives at their door seeking employment. Beatrice soon becomes indispensable as Eleanor’s apprentice, but her new life with the witches is marred by strange occurrences. She sees things no one else can see. She hears voices no one else can hear. Objects appear out of thin air, as if gifts from the dead. Has she been touched by magic or is she simply losing her mind?

Eleanor wants to tread lightly and respect the magic manifest in the girl, but Adelaide sees a business opportunity. Working with Dr. Quinn Brody, a talented alienist, she submits Beatrice to a series of tests to see if she truly can talk to spirits. Amidst the witches’ tug-of-war over what’s best for her, Beatrice disappears, leaving them to wonder whether it was by choice or by force.

As Adelaide and Eleanor begin the desperate search for Beatrice, they’re confronted by accusations and spectres from their own pasts. In a time when women were corseted, confined and committed for merely speaking their minds, were any of them safe?

  1. Great selection…but missing a four book series…the name of which I cannot remember….grave talking girl…..several years old…big help, aren’t I? Sorry…it’ll come to me, eventually.

  2. I’ve only read Iron and Magic and The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Magic from your list. I can’t think of any other witches at this time.

  3. I’ve read about half the series on the list and loved them, too. I was just doing a re-read of the Weird Girls series. I like Deborah Blakes’ Baba Yaga witches and Karen Chance’s Cassie Palmer. There are probably more if I were to check my lists. But those are probably my favorites.

  4. Janelle, rachel, savanah, paige, the wird sisters, and elara would be on mine. I would probably add hermione and I’m sure there are others that I just can’t think of at the moment.

  5. awesome top 10!! ive read wicked deeds only. they all sound great!! ive put DEAD WITCH WALKING on my top tbr gr list!! shared on all my socials!!
