It’s no secret that we love our romance books with a paranormal twist. Whether it’s a red hot paranormal romance with a fanged and broody hero, or an action packed urban fantasy with a shifter warrior by our side. But, as it’s the Halloween season we wanted to talk about a figure that is synonymous with the holiday; witches. However, the witches we are talking about aren’t the manically cackling black garbed and green skinned old ladies with an unfortunate wart problem. Instead, our witches are powerful female figures who use their magic to save the day and the get the guy!
Witch books, what the hag?
Witch books? What even is that? Who wants a romance book where you fall in love with a warty old hag who likes to sprinkle eye of newt in her morning coffee? Well, lets take the patriarchy out of the equation and take a (very brief) look at witches.
The history of witches is long and fascinating, and dark. Very very dark. Especially if you’re the witch. It also fluctuates from culture to culture. However, quite often it has one thing in common: it was a way to persecute women, especially those who lived on the outskirts of society. That is a sweeping generalisation of course, and in Scandinavian countries there were slightly more males accused of witchcraft than female.
Book series about witches – 100% all witches!
If you want a book series that’s all witches then you’ve come to the right place. We’ve come up with some book series which are witch focussed, meaning that the main characters are all witches. It’s a witch extravaganza if you will.

But, there are a lot of witch books out there. They vary in tone from cute romantic comedy books to beautiful witch fantasy books. There are book series about witches, and series where witches are just one of many paranormal characters. But, whatever mood you’re in there is a witch book to match it. Witch fantasy books
Lets start our journey by leaving our world behind and diving into some witch fantasy books. These witch books take us somewhere completely new and are rich with world building, far reaching plot lines and of course magic and romance. If you want your witch romance with a side of big juicy plot and brand new worlds to explore, these could be the books for you.
Daughter of the Blood
by Anne Bishop
Series: Black Jewels #1
read this is you want:
In this dark fantasy, Jaenelle, the foretold witch has the unique ability to cross through worlds. This read is both fascinating and disturbing but so worth the read for the world building alone. For those of us who like our reading on the darker side, this is perfect. If you want something that has witches, magic, and mystical creatures, you should definitely pick up this book and meet Jaenelle.
Urban fantasy witch books
We have given you witch fantasy books already.. but we decided to do urban fantasy separately. But, what is the difference you ask? As with all urban fantasy books are set in our world; however, although it’s planet earth it’s not quite as you know it. These witch books also follow one heroine as she grapples with her own magic, powerful enemies and of course her love life. If you are in the mood for a witch book that’s more action packed and plot driven, take a look at these:
Unholy Ghosts
by Stacia Kane
Series: Downside Ghosts #1
read this is you want:
The Downside Ghosts series is one of my absolute favourite series and it was one of the first I thought of when I was coming up with my list of witch books. Chess, our heroine, takes you on a dark journey, both through her personal demons as a drug addict and the ghostly dangers she has to combat with her witchy powers. She can be frustrating and self-destructive, all whilst also being brave, clever and vulnerable. You want to shake her and look after her all at once. Then there’s the romance. If Chess is a fantastic heroine, just wait until your meet Terrible…
Dead Witch Walking
by Kim Harrison
Series: The Hollows #1
read this is you want:
If there was ever a witch that needed to struggle to come into her full potential, it’s Rachel Morgan from The Hollows series. She starts the series without really knowing her true power and armed with just a desire for doing good. It takes some time for her to understand things aren’t as black and white as she’s always thought and sometimes to do good, you have to taint yourself with some bad. The growth Rachel shows throughout the series is one of the things that make endears her to me. That, and the fact she is still a hot mess. If you like heroines to be perfectly imperfect then Rachel is your witch. She’s just as much fun as she is badass.
Iron and Magic
by Ilona Andrews
Series: Iron Covenant #1
read this is you want:
Elara aka the White Warlock. She leads a rag tag group of people, all with their own magical capabilities and all view her as a mixture of their leader and their goddess. To keep them safe she has made a deal with the devil aka Hugh D’Ambray, Preceptor of the Iron Dogs and all round ruthless Warlord. That’s when we watch the sparks fly as these two powerful individuals try to work together to keep themselves and their people safe.
I loved Elara, she’s powerful, smart and ruthlessly loyal to her people, if you are after a strong female protagonist Elara is perfect. But, what is really fantastic about this book is the interplay between Hugh and Elara. Both are used to being in-charge and their mixture of dislike and attraction that grows into respect and more is enthralling to read. If you want an enemies to lovers story between two alphas…this is for you!

Paranormal romance witch books
If you want a witch romance book with vampires, shifters and all number of things that boink in the night, then a paranormal romance with witches may be the choice for you. When you start looking, you’ll find there are loads of paranormal witch books, but sometimes having too much choice is as debilitating as having no choice at all. So, we have narrowed it down to some of our favourite paranormal romance witch books!
Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night
by Kresley Cole
Series: Immortals After Dark #4
read this is you want:
Not everything has to be serious, and Mari is definitely a fun girl! Really, all the witches in the Immortals After Dark series are just a little crazy and out of their mind and the kinds of girls you just want to go out with. You know you’ll end up getting in lots of trouble. She knows what she wants and goes for it, but she’s also kick ass and can hold her own. If you want to read about a feisty witch, look no further than this book and this series.
Dime Store Magic
by Kelley Armstrong
Series: Women of the Otherworld #3
read this is you want:
If you haven’t read the Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong then you’re missing out. This is a fantastic mix of urban fantasy and paranormal romance and contains a plethora of paranormal creatures, including witches.
Paige is a witch, the head of the leader of the American Covens, at least in name. All the other witches believe that she’s too young, wild and inexperienced to lead them. However, Paige is determined to drag them into this century. What I love about Paige is that although she isn’t the most powerful witch in this series, her curiosity and fierce loyalty still make her a formidable foe. She also had one of my favourite romances in the series, everyone talks about Clay, but Lucas’ quiet confidence steals the show for me.

Deceived by the Gargoyles
by Lillian Lark
Series: Monstrous Matches #2
read this is you want:
Want a plus sized witch heroine? How about a reverse harem? A monster hero (or three)? Some spicy sex scenes with tail action? Welp. Looks like I’ve found your next read. I am a huge fan of monster romance books and this one recently popped up in my kindle unlimited suggestions. Now I am slightly worried that Jeff Bezos lives in my brain as this sexy paranormal monster romance was exactly what I was after.

Heart of Darkness
by Lauren Dane
Series: Bound by Magick #1
read this is you want:
This is the series to read for some suspenseful and spicy witchy romance with fated mates. First, we have the heroine who was raised as part of a Clan and has lots of ideas for how to better the future of it. And then the hero grew up outside of a Clan and has little knowledge about the potential of his powers. She quickly realizes he’s her mate. Meriel’s Clan is assigned to investigate a series of witch kidnappings by a group of mages. They’ve been draining and killing witches. Get ready for plenty of steam but also snarky comments and fun personalities.
Romantic comedy witch books
Doing magic is a serious business. But, just because our witches take their magic seriously, it doesn’t mean they can’t have the odd hilarious disaster, funny banter and a lot of fun. We’ve gone through and selected our favourite romantic witch books that had us swooning, laughing and generally having a hell of a good time. Enjoy!
About a Dragon
by G.A. Aiken
Series: Dragon Kin #2
read this is you want:
Looking for a fantasy book, but you want something fun, that going to make you laugh. Welp, I have found the series for you. In the second book in the series we meet Talaith, our witch heroine. She’s the type of heroine who takes no shit from anyone, Talaith is about to become your BFF. This series is full of larger than life charismatic characters, like the adorably arrogant dragon heroes. But Talaith manages to stand out by being a complete bad ass witch and is the tamer of one of the most obliviously arrogant (and hilarious) and self centred heroes I’ve ever read.

Slouch Witch
by Helen Harper
Series: The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Magic #1
read this is you want:
There are plenty of gritty and dark witchy reads, but sometimes you just want to put the doom and gloom behind you and have some fun. Enter Ivy Wilde from Helen Harper’s series The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Magic. Ivy is my kind of heroine… she prefers a chocolate biscuit (or four) and a good lounge in front of the TV rather than racing around trying to save the day. Unfortunately, our laid back, but powerful heroine gets dragged into solving murders and saving the day far too often for her liking. So I highly recommend this series it is a light-hearted and romantic urban fantasy with a unique heroine.

Wolf Gone Wild
by Juliette Cross
Series: Stay A Spell #1
read this is you want:
Are you ready for a hysterically funny witch and wolf pairing? If you’re in the mood for a good paranormal romantic comedy, THIS is the book. That’s it. The heroine has to work on breaking a curse the hero has. He can’t shift and his wolf is more on the surface in his mind. Meaning he can actually talk to him. And he’s very particular about what he wants.

A Letter to Three Witches
by Elizabeth Bass
read this is you want:
For a light read to brighten up what can be a very dreary season this could be the witch romance for you. Especially as it was a mix of small town mystery and contemporary romance. If you are fans (and who isn’t?!) of The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling as well as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, then you’re going to love A Letter to Three Witches.
Young adult witch books
The young adult genre is drowning in witch books. It was difficult going through and picking the best ones as there is a smorgasbord of interesting novels to chose from. But, I chose some of our favourites and you’ll find a variety of tones from magic packed adventure, to dark, horror adjacent feminist fantasy. If you want a young adult witch book, we have one to match your mood!
Available on kindle unlimited
The Bone Witch
by Rin Chupeco
Series: The Bone Witch #1
read this is you want:
The Bone Witch is a story of a young lady discovering her powers and finding her identity. You get to go on a journey with her as she trains and comes into her power and explore her complex relationship with her family. Therefore, if you enjoy world building, we loved the world that Chupeco had created, we had witches and warlocks, royal court politics, battling monsters, and a smidge of romance.
The Year of the Witching
by Alexis Henderson
read this is you want:
If you like a bit of horror in your witch books…well I’ve something for you. Certainly, this dark fantasy was intense, with grotesque imagery and an oppressive and down right terrifying atmosphere. Especially if you are female. This is a book you can really immerse yourself in and sink your teeth into it’s feminist themes and commentary on racial politics. However, underlying themes aside…the nail biting story and the well crafted atmosphere is enough to keep you gripped right to the bloody end.
Historical witch books
Let’s go back in time! These witch romance books are all set in the past. We’ve discovered some light hearted and fun historical witch books as well as something a bit more gothic and cutting.
The League of Gentlewomen Witches
by India Holton
Series: Dangerous Damsels #2
read this is you want:
Confession: I haven’t read this (yet). But it’s been lurking in the back of my mind for a while. How can it not? There’s a witch sword fighting with a broom on the cover. I need to know more. This book contains a powerful artefact, a secret society of witches and pirates. Oh my.
The Witch of Willow Hall
by Hester Fox
read this is you want:
The perfect gothic feel witchy romance book that is just slightly romantic, just enough to keep a romance reader happy but that it won’t overwhelm if you romance is not your thing. With all the gothic staples, the tortured secret past, the manor, the tragedy. The Witch of Willow Hall is enchanting and spellbinding. But so is anything written by Hester Fox.

Great selection…but missing a four book series…the name of which I cannot remember….grave talking girl…..several years old…big help, aren’t I? Sorry…it’ll come to me, eventually.
Thanks Kathleen. Hmmm, I am trying to think of the series but I can’t think what it is! Let us know when you remember 🙂
Suzanne
Grave witch by kalayna price? Although I think there may be more than 4 books.
I’ve only read Iron and Magic and The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Magic from your list. I can’t think of any other witches at this time.
I’ve read about half the series on the list and loved them, too. I was just doing a re-read of the Weird Girls series. I like Deborah Blakes’ Baba Yaga witches and Karen Chance’s Cassie Palmer. There are probably more if I were to check my lists. But those are probably my favorites.
Janelle, rachel, savanah, paige, the wird sisters, and elara would be on mine. I would probably add hermione and I’m sure there are others that I just can’t think of at the moment.
The only ones that come to mind are the Halliwell’s from Charmed
