What is bold girl spring?

We are all familiar with hot girl summer, right? Well bold girl spring is its bookish cousin. Channeling all the Aries vibes because we kick off spring with an Aries season reading reset so our mood is less about being dark and gloomy and more about following your curiosity and making impulsive decisions.

For me that basically means that bold girl spring is all about that big main character energy. It feels fun, fearless and a little unhinged. Perfect to drag you out of the hibernation of winter.

How to pick a bold girl spring read

If you’re sitting there wondering how to figure out if a book fits the bold girl spring mood, here’s a cheat sheet. Ask yourself:

  • Does it scream main character energy?
  • Would this character make choices I definitely wouldn’t, but I’d love to watch to see what happens?
  • Is there some chaos and at least a little emotional damage?
  • Does it feel fun and fearless?

If your book feels risk, weird or simply wildly different from your usual comfort reads, that’s probably a good sign that you have found a bold girl spring read.

3 perfect bold girl spring romance books

The Bone King and the Starling by Elizabeth Stephens

The Bone King and the Starling by Elizabeth Stephens

Content warning: dark themes including non-con, violence, and abuse.

Why I picked it up: I kept seeing this one everywhere and had to know what the buzz was about. It’s Viking. It’s dark. It’s primal. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever read and it absolutely delivered one of the most unique historical romances I’ve read. It also has this fantasy vibe to it so if you’re not usually a historical romance reader, this might be the perfect cross for you to start.

What it’s about: He’s a beast of a warlord. She’s a low status thrall. When he demands a warm body for his furs, guess who gets chosen?

Sunastara and the Venusian by Jess K. Hardy

Sunastara & the Venusian by Jess K. Hardy

Content warning: loss of a child (in the past)

Why I picked it up: I’m putting together a list of romance books set on a cruise or boat, and when I saw this described as a little bit Star Trek, a little bit Love Boat, and a touch of The Fifth Element? Instant read.

What it’s about: She’s the hospitality specialist on an interstellar pleasure cruise. He’s her once in a lifetime hookup turned new crewmember. Now they’re coworkers with very unresolved tension.

It’s chaotic and gives off big found family in space vibes with plenty of steam. This was the book I didn’t know I needed and honestly I think more people need to read Jess K. Hardy in general.

A Duke Never Tells by Suzanne Enoch

A Duke Never Tells by Suzanne Enoch

Why I picked it up: I’ve liked Suzanne Enoch in the past, but this premise was just too fun to resist. Everyone’s pretending to be someone else and falling for the “wrong” person.

What it’s about: She’s an heiress undercover as a maid. He’s a duke undercover as a butler. Shenanigans? Absolutely. Two romances? Yes, please.

This one is a historical romcom heavy on the “com” and packed with the most unexpected romantic entanglements. Basically, this book is just a lot of fun!

For Pleasure or Worse by Karissa Kinword

For Pleasure or Worse by Karissa Kinword

Sometimes your book besties just know. Amanda messaged me about a new fave that immediately shot to the top of her 2025 list:

This one’s the second book in Karissa Kinword’s Dirty Delta series and it’s a spicy romcom about a cam couple juggling wedding plans and chaotic families while keeping their double life secret. It’s wild, warm, and full of heart (and heat).

Thanks Amanda for the rec, you nailed the vibe. And Amanda picked this book as her choice for me to read in the 13 books picked by friends I’ll be reading in 2026.
