in the wake of the ruined by kalie cassidy

Summer is the season I sometimes do the least reading but the most intentional escapism. I want to be transported somewhere new while I’m soaking up the sun. Or hiding inside with the AC, more likely. So I went through everything landing between now and the end of August and pulled the summer 2026 romance releases I’m actually excited about. The beachy ones, the dark ones, the fanged ones, all of it.

I’ve sorted them by subgenre so you can go straight to your shelf. Pick your vibe and start there. And the ones at the very top? Those are the ones I’d put in your hands first.

The Summer 2026 Romance Releases I’m Most Excited About

Some of my most anticipated books of the year are releasing this summer and I can’t shut up about them. Yes, I still need to make time to read them, but I just know they’re going to blow me away!

most anticipated summer 2026 releases

In the Wake of the Ruined by Kalie Cassidy comes out July 7, 2026 and it brings the dark fantasy romance vibes with a siren who is a bit of a monster. Please read the first book in the series before diving into this one! It’s one of my most anticipated sequels ever because the first book was so beautiful and atmospheric, a little gothic. I need more of that in my life. Grab it on Amazon

Burn by Nia Myst releases July 2, 2026. Nia Myst burst on the dark romance scene last year and when I tell you I couldn’t have fallen harder for this group of vigilante women. This one is an enemies to lovers, stalker x stalker, about a psychopath cop hunting the vigilante that’s taking out criminals in the city. Give it to me now! Not only is this series dark, but it’s also SO HOT. Grab it on Amazon

Ravenous by Kresley Cole is the first in a new series coming out July 28, 2026. This is set in the same Immortals After Dark world but it’s not a continuation of the story arc in that series. And let me just say, I am ready for another book by paranormal romance queen Kresley Cole. Grab it on Amazon

Beach-Bag Contemporary Romance

Contemporary romance does the heavy lifting for summer, at least for me, and these are the ones I’d actually throw in a beach bag. I’m always looking for something fun, extravagant or a bit of armchair travel.

contemporary romance summer 2026 releases

Starting off with In Stormy Weather by Chelsea Curto coming out July 14, 2026. First I’m a fan of Chelsea Curto’s hockey romances (and dark-ish romance). But I cannot resist a weather related romance. I don’t know what it is about this trope but it gets me every time. Out August 18, 2026 is Mutual Discord by Liana De La Rosa and wait for this one. It’s about an influencer who has feelings for one of her followers and then turns out he’s her best friend’s boyfriend. What? This sounds all kinds of soapy level of drama and isn’t that just perfect for summer? But also, I’ve loved Liana De La Rosa’s historical romances, so I’m ready for a contemporary by her. And rounding things out we have a contemporary dark academia. Daybreak by Autumn Woods comes out July 28, 2026 and this is the conclusion of the Sorrowing University duology. If you’re a fan of RuNyx or Maxton Hall, then you need to have this duology on your TBR. It’s the perfect murder mystery with some college drama and I can’t wait to see how things will finish out in this installment. You still have time to catch up and read book 1 if you haven’t yet.

Dark Romance

Not everything about summer is sunshine. If you want your beach read a little darker, these are the books you need to add.

Dark Romance 2026 Summer Releases

I first discovered Alta Hensley last year and I’m so excited for Songbird in the Gallows coming out June 30, 2026. This one is for the fans of Brynne Weaver, about a retired serial killer and his murder curious protégé and it’s inspired by the Bluebeard folktale. How perfect is that for summer? Next is Pink Ink by Avina St. Graves out August 4, 2026. I’ve seen many books by this author I want to read, and I will read a few this year. But this one is pitched as Dexter meets Gothikana. As an OG Dexter girlie, I’m so pumped to read it. A film student tracking the murders of a serial killer and a brooding professor. It also sounds like Nocticadia and I’m here for it. And closing out the season, Roped by Saffron A. Kent comes out August 25, 2026 and I loved the first book in this dark cowboy romance last year. This one was hinted at with a bit of a stalker theme. I can’t wait to read it.

Historical Romance

Give me a season of scandal. These bring the wit, the yearning, and the inconvenient match energy I never get tired of. Summer is just the time for a historical romantic comedy.

historical romance summer 2026 releases

Pride Comes Before a Fall by Virginia Heath is out July 28, 2026 and if you’re in the market for a fun and witty regency romcom, this is the one. The hero is a Duke caring for his rebellious siblings and is falling for the chaperone he’s hired to watch them. That setup gets me every single time. You Had Me at Heist by Christina Britton releasing June 16, 2026 which is great I think for a little adventure mixed in with your witty historical. Botanical work, Bow Street Runner and a secret society of widows. I’m in! And Just for the Season by Rachel Griffiths which comes out July 7, 2026 and it’s pitched as a perfect match for fans of Lisa Kleypas and Sarah MacLean. That is me! It’s basically The Bachelorette set in Regency England. I’ve read this premise before and can’t get enough.

Historical & Women’s Fiction

For when you want more history and journey than swoons. The kinds of books that sit with you after you’ve closed them and make you emotional at 3am.

One of my favorite authors is back with a story that is bound to fascinate me. An Infinite Love Story by Chanel Cleeton releasing July 7, 2026 is about an astronaut lost in space and his wife reliving their love story while she tries to figure out what happened. It’s set in the 1960s Space race. I’m already hooked. Bring on the emotional damage. From the author of the incredibly popular, The Idea of You, comes Crash Into Me by Robinne Lee on July 7, 2026. It tells the story of a married woman with children in LA struggling to find herself until she runs into someone from her past that has her questioning everything. You know this one will be emotionally gutting. And finally The Chateau on Sunset by Natasha Lester on June 2, 2026, which is a feminist reimagining of Jane Eyre set against the backdrop and glamour of 1957 Hollywood. I think this sounds like a great one for fans of the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

Paranormal Romance

You knew I couldn’t do a summer list without my one true love. I want something new and fresh in paranormal romance. Sometimes I go for the romcoms, but this year they don’t have to be. Just give me unique and new. A new voice, a new mashup.

paranormal romance summer 2026 releases

Maggie and Arthur’s Magic Moments by Leslie Rene coming out July 28, 2026 and we are not going to pretend that cover was not the reason this got on my radar. The professor of incantations and the leading alchemist at the magical college sharing tight quarters is exactly the kind of plot I need to see more of. Magic and mayhem! Demons and Diplomacy by Megan Frampton out August 25, 2026 is exactly the mashup I need between historical romance and paranormal romance. A human working for the British government to keep the peace between species, until the Devil himself arrives. I can’t tell you how excited this plot makes me. And finally a previously indie-published title, The Lunatics by Navessa Allen coming August 4, 2026 where the author of Lights Out gives us a dark werewolf romance where a mating ceremony goes wrong and our heroine finds herself mated to a stuffy werewolf. Billionaire by day and vigilante by night, he sounds just like Batman and I like it.

Urban Fantasy

Not the same as paranormal romance, and I’ll die on that hill until everyone understands it. Urban fantasy puts the romance on the back burner if it’s even there at all. If that’s your speed, here’s the summer’s best.

urban fantasy summer 2026 releases

We’ve got some of the OG authors in urban fantasy releasing books this summer so we are being FED. Starting with my most anticipated, Unpredictable Magic by Faith Hunter coming July 14, 2026. This one just makes my Kim Harrison loving self happy. Angela and her brother Evan run a PI firm investigating supernatural crime. Demons strike the city for the first time since the Witch War and all evidence points to Angie’s vampire ex husband. This has me written all over it. Even a possible second chance romance, yes! Standing Stones by Yasmine Galenorn on July 28, 2026 brings the 20th book in the Wild Hunt series. Faes and elemental goddesses overrun Seattle, perfect for a touch of dark arts to your summer. And Keri Arthur is launching the first book in a new series set in the same world of Lizzie Grace. Dark Secrets comes out July 14, 2026. No information has been updated about this book yet, but I can’t wait.

Fantasy & Romantasy

The romantasy shelf feels like it’s always crowded, but only flagging the ones doing something I haven’t already seen a hundred times. I think you’ll appreciate that.

romantasy summer 2026 releases

The Serpent’s Throne by Kathryn Ann Kingsley comes out July 10, 2026 and it’s the third book in this vampire dark romantasy series. If you haven’t read it yet, get caught up. This series feels like an urban fantasy dressed up as romantasy. It’s dark and alluring and has sexy vamps. You can’t go wrong. The Lion and the Deathless Dark by Carissa Broadbent comes out August 4, 2026 and it’s the 5th in the Crowns of Nyaxia series. And yes, this is a popular author but she totally earns her spot on this list. This is also the first in the Bloodborn Duet. And it’s more vampires. We are in heaven right now. And to close it out with the most original, The Winged Game by Sophie Kim out June 30, 2026. This is a sports romantasy, yes you read that right. It’s rugby-esque sport, kind of like Fourth Wing meets rugby. And it was blurbed with Ruby Dixon, so I’m already convinced to try it out.
