The Hathaways Series by Lisa Kleypas: Books in Order + Why We Still Love Them

If you’ve ever caught yourself casually ranking Lisa Kleypas heroes like it’s your Roman Empire (guilty), then you already know how special the Hathaways series is.

How you know you are a humongous Lisa Kleypas fan?

(1) Reread all her books obsessively avidly;
(2) Have daydreamed about all her heroes;
(3) Have a fangirl scream-dance release day routine perfected.

We have all the above ticked off and feel no shame, and although we can no longer do (3) for the Hathaways as it is a finished book series, number (1) and (2) are still going strong (especially (2)) Like all Lisa Kleypas’s romances, the Hathaway series is well written, funny and romantic. And reading each one is like meeting up with your friends and family and settling in to watch the romance blossom. So let’s get ready to dive into the Hathaways series by Lisa Kleypas, one hot hero (and book) at a time.

Who Are the Hathaways?

The series follows the five orphaned Hathaway siblings: Amelia, Win, Poppy, Leo, and Beatrix, plus a rotating cast of Romani love interests, brooding bad boys, and repressed gentlemen. There’s angst. There’s banter. There are ferrets.

Each book stands on its own but is so much better read in order. You’ll catch character arcs building, past couples meddling, and inside jokes that only make sense once you’re in deep.

Set a few years after the end of the Wallflowers series, the Hathaways deliver its own real magic. Watching all five siblings grow across the series is the highlight. That and Leo Hathaway, who is, no exaggeration, top ten Lisa Kleypas hero of all time.

Here’s why we’re still obsessed and the best order to read the Hathaways series.

Mine Till Midnight by Lisa Kleypas

Mine Till Midnight

“The Rom believe you should take the road that calls to you, and never turn back. Because you never know what adventures await. So we’re going to take this road,” he murmured, “and see where it leads.”

Meet Amelia Hathaway and Cam Rohan. She’s the older sister holding the family together. He’s a half-Rom, half-English hero with serious “I will burn the world for you” energy. This book sets the tone for the whole series, gritty, romantic, and a little unconventional.

Seduce Me at Sunrise by Lisa Kleypas

Seduce Me at Sunrise

“All the fires of hell could burn for a thousand years and it wouldn’t equal what I feel for you in one minute of the day. I love you so much there is no pleasure in it. Nothing but torment. Because if I could dilute what I feel for you to the millionth part, it would still be enough to kill you. And even if it drives me mad, I would rather see you live in the arms of that cold, soulless bastard than die in mine.”

If you love tortured pining, buckle up. Win Hathaway and Kev Merripen are childhood soulmates dealing with trauma, class, and more longing than is medically advisable. This book is pure ache.

Tempt Me at Twilight by Lisa Kleypas

Tempt Me at Twilight

“In the fairy tale you mentioned last night, I would probably be the villain. But it’s possible the villain would treat you far better than the prince would have.”

Poppy Hathaway meets her match in Harry Rutledge, a hotel magnate and morally questionable cinnamon roll. Think: Victorian-era love bombing with emotional payoff.

Married by Morning by Lisa Kleypas

Married by Morning

“You are not a perfect woman. You have an evil temper, you’re as blind as a mole, you’re a deplorable poet, and frankly, your French accent could use some work.” Supporting himself on his elbows, Leo took her face in his hands. “But when I put those things together with the rest of you, it makes you into the most perfectly imperfect woman I’ve ever known.”

LEO. Hathaway. If you’ve read the series up to this point, you already love him. His enemies-to-lovers arc with Miss Marks is witty, steamy, and surprisingly tender. One of Kleypas’ best.

Love in the Afternoon by Lisa Kleypas

Love in the Afternoon

“Beatrix, do you know what happens to girls who ask such naughty questions?”
“They’re ravished in haylofts?” she inquired hopefully.

Beatrix is a quirky, animal-loving heroine who writes letters to a soldier pretending to be someone else. This book is epistolary romance gold and a fan favorite for a reason.

Do You Need to Read the Series in Order?

Technically, no. Emotionally? Yes. These books build on each other in the best ways, with inside jokes, character growth, and romantic tension that hits harder when you’re fully invested in all the Hathaway series family mess.

Wallflowers, Ravenels, and Hathaways: How They’re Connected

The Hathaways series are set just after the Wallflowers series, and yes, you’ll get cameos from Westcliff, Lillian, and Daisy. The Ravenels come next and tie back to both earlier series with character crossovers. It’s a whole Kleypas-verse and yes, you should absolutely read them all.

Why We Still Love the Hathaways series by Lisa Kleypas

  • Found family feels
  • Class tension, disability rep, trauma arcs… all handled with heart
  • Heroine-forward stories before it was trendy
  • Kleypas’ signature banter + yearning = catnip
  • Leo Hathaway. Enough said.

  1. LOL! I can tick off 1 and 2 also :))

LK is a great writer, but I miss her HRs so I can’t wait for her to go back to them 🙂

  2. I’m with Aly. I’ve read a couple of her contemps but gave up after that. I don’t think I will read any more of her work unless it’s a historical.

Plus, Some of her historicals have Paul Marron on the stepbacks but not the contemps.

  3. Hello! I really love the way you have reviewed the ‘Hathaway series’. You literally make me want to read them again. Lisa Kleypas is my favorite author and I miss all the characters in it. I am definitely ticking all the box above and indeed I have no shame in telling that I am a fan of her books. However, it is sad that she has not continued to write the Hathaway. It would have been so awesome if she continued this series. Maybe we would have had the story of their children. However, when I think about it I am also happy as well that the Hathaway series is now over as who knows maybe the way we are feeling about the book would have changed. You know what I really like about Lisa Kleypas like she has written this series in such a way that you will never get tired of it. In your review you did not mention the metaphor that Beatrix uses to describe each character. Beatrix who is an animal lover uses animal to describe the personalities of the people. For instance, Poppy is a rabbit, Catherine is a hedgehog, Amelia is hen, Beatrix is a ferret and Harry is a cat. I find this fun and creative that someone’s personality can be compared to an animal.
