Play by Play by Jaci Burton Series Guide

If you’re into sports romance, the Play by Play by Jaci Burton series is a must-read in my opinion. I picked up The Perfect Play around the Super Bowl the year it came out, and, okay, I admit it—I was totally drawn in by that original cover. If you take a look at the man chest covers, you’ll get the vibe, although it’s been revamped with an illustrated cover now.

The covers for this series at the time were iconic and standouts in a sea other sexy headless men and that’s saying something. The books in this series don’t follow only one sport which is really nice and gives a variety, delivering steamy romance, lovable characters and plenty of action. Instead of diving only into a team, sometimes we get into a family of athletes that went into different sports. And plenty of friends and found family vibes. Jaci Burton delivers the heat and spice with a heaping side of sweetness.

What is the Play by Play by Jaci Burton series about?

The Play by Play by Jaci Burton series takes you into the thrilling world of professional sports, where athletes not only strive for victory on the field but also navigate the complexities of love and relationships off it. Each book focuses on a different sport—football, baseball, hockey, and more—following the lives of star athletes and the strong, dynamic partners who capture their hearts. From high-stakes games to steamy romantic encounters, the series explores themes of ambition, teamwork, and the power of love to overcome obstacles. With plenty of sports action and steamy romance, this series is a total win and will keep you hooked from start to finish.

Does the series need to be read in order?

The Play by Play series consists of interconnected standalones. You can enjoy each book on its own, as some don’t connect directly. However, reading them in order adds depth, letting you see relationships build over time and sometimes exploring different members of the same family.

Taking a Shot by Jaci Burton

“Sex.” He shook his head. “Yeah, that’s a problem.” He brushed his shoulder against hers. He understood the chemistry thing. Just being near her made his dick spring to life.

She turned in the chair to face him. “It is. What should we do about that?”

“I don’t think sex is a problem for me, Jenna. You already know how I feel. The question is, what do you want to do about it?”

She slid her fingers down the lapel of his jacket, the look she gave him burning him from the inside out.

Yeah, definite chemistry. He was surprised flames weren’t sparking between them. His breathing quickened and if she didn’t make a decision soon he was going to have to make a quick exit, because this woman was driving him crazy.

“I think you should come home with me tonight and we can talk about it,” she said.

Playing to Win by Jaci Burton

He was wrong. She was fine. It didn’t matter. She had always shown everyone how strong she was.

“Show me how you feel, Peaches.”

Her bottom lip trembled. She got up, walked to the window to look outside, staring at the darkness, not really seeing anything but the years falling away, stripping away the cool, confident woman she was now, revealing the scared little girl she once was. She’d vowed to never go back to that place, to never revisit those feelings again, yet here she stood.
Cole wrapped his arms around her. She stiffened.

“It’s okay to be vulnerable, Savannah, to let someone see you scared.”

“I’m not scared. Not anymore.”

Interview with Jaci Burton

We’ve interviewed Jaci Burton multiple times (which you can browse through here) and these are some of the answers to help you get to know her better.

Jaci Burton

We’ve never grilled you for these before, but how about sharing five things about you that are not common knowledge?

  1. I spoke fluent Italian as a child, thanks to my maternal grandparents. Sadly, the only thing I remember now is a song my grandfather used to sing to me. (If you don’t use it, you lose it, people)
  2. I was once a licensed private investigator. Interesting job, but not as fun as it looks on TV.
  3. I was also once a vice president of a division in corporate America, managing hundreds of staff. Let’s just say I much prefer being an author. 😉
  4. My first car was a 1964 Dodge Polara. I had to have the transmission replaced twice. That car gave new meaning to the acronym P.O.S. My second car was a 1968 Chevy Camaro, 3 speed, 327 engine. * sigh *. Sure wish I still had that car.
  5. I have six tattoos. My favorite is my writerly tattoo on my wrist. If you ever meet me, ask to see it!

What do you think is the best quality or most attractive thing of each and every hero of your Play by Play series? See that’s easier than asking for favorites 😉

The one thing I find most attractive about each of my Play by Play heroes is their vulnerability. They might not even be aware of it, and it may take them awhile to show it, but eventually they’re all vulnerable in one way or another, and they trust the heroine enough to show it. It takes a lot for an athlete to show vulnerability, whether it be physical or emotional, and their willingness to shed that macho image and expose their underbelly is one of the things I love the most about these guys.

As with any series that goes on for as many books as yours, how do you manage to keep the storylines fresh?

It’s all about the characters. Each character drives the story. They’re unique, have their own backgrounds, conflicts and goals. They’re completely different from any of the other characters I’ve written, so I’d like to think their story would be fresh and exciting and nothing like anyone else’s.

Many authors get their ideas from everyday life. Do you have a story to share where your real-life experience has influenced your writing?

My love of riding Harleys influenced my Wild Riders series, and my utter addiction to sports influences my Play by Play series. I often write about the places where I live or where I’ve lived before, like St Louis and Oklahoma and California, because I know those locations best and loved them the most.

If you could write a warning label for yourself as a person or an author, what would it say?

Warning: Author on deadline–bad disposition, curses often. On strict diet of pizza, Hershey Kisses and bubble gum. Do not attempt to engage in conversation.

I probably know the answer to this one but which is hotter: bikers or athletes?

Both.

What does a typical day in the life of Jaci Burton look like?

Oh, it’s messy and unorganized. Coffee and dealing with my dogs and doing laundry and writing and answering emails and doing promo and playing on Twitter and Facebook and doing more writing and answering more emails. Somewhere in there I might even comb my hair.
