What Even Is Dark Romance?

Dark romance is like regular romance’s deranged older sister. Think obsession, manipulation, criminal behavior, and complex power dynamics, but all wrapped in a love story that still gives you butterflies (and also makes you question your sanity). It’s not for everyone, and that’s okay. But if you’re curious, this post will ease you in.

Each of these books is a step deeper into the dark. You’ll start light (ish), then work your way up to serial killer romance territory. If you tap out at book one or two? Totally fine. But if you make it through all three and still want more, well… welcome to your villain era.

The Dark Romance for Beginners Starter Pack

Think of this as your morally questionable guide. I hand-picked these three books to walk you into the shadows, holding your hand, instead of throwing you off a cliff. You’ll start with dark-lite (with jokes) and not too much graphic violence, graduate to serial killers with banter and a little gore, and end with a morally gray masterpiece that dares you to root for a literal killer. It’s a ramp-up experience designed to help you test the waters before you dive headfirst into the abyss.

Lights Out by Navessa Allen

Book One: Lights Out by Navessa Allen

Tropes: Stalker romance, masked content creator, cat dad energy

We’re starting soft. Well, relatively. Lights Out is a psychological stalker romance with a side of humor, where the darkness is more fantasy than full-on graphic violence.

Our hero? A thirst-trap creator who wears a mask online. Our heroine? An ER nurse going through it. She sends him a spicy fantasy message thinking nothing will happen, until it does. He finds her. He breaks in. He plays along.

And weirdly? You’re rooting for him.

There’s something about this book that makes you question your sanity in the best way. He’s watching her sleep via hidden camera, yet he’s also bonding with her cat. If you read this and think, “Why am I like this?” congrats, you’re on the right track.

If Lights Out made you a little uncomfy but also intrigued, level up with this absolute chaos bomb. Butcher and Blackbird is a laugh-out-loud romcom… starring two serial killers.

They only kill bad people (think Dexter, but make it spicy), and their annual murder showdown is somehow the most unhinged meet-cute ever.

The banter? Hysterical. The spice? Oh, it’s there. The plot? Honestly makes you forget you’re reading about people who literally kill for fun. Even when you’re literally reading about it! If you can giggle through gore, you’re officially on the dark romcom train.

Bonus: Rumors are flying that this one’s getting adapted. So read it now, flex later.

Mindfuck series by S.T. Abby

Book Three: The Mindf*ck Series by S.T. Abby

Tropes: Female serial killer, revenge, she falls for the FBI profiler hunting her

You made it to the final boss. This series (five novellas or one chunky paperback) is the ultimate test of your dark romance starter endurance.

Lana Myers is a serial killer with a purpose. She’s enacting revenge for what was done to her, and falling for the FBI profiler investigating her crimes. He doesn’t know it’s her. Yet.

Less romcom, more psychological thriller, this is the book that makes you want her to get away with murder. It’s bloody, tragic, twisted, and somehow still an amazing love story.

If you vibe with Lana’s female rage and finish the series feeling more alive than unhinged…you’re ready to go deeper.

So… Did You Survive the Dark Romance Starter Pack?

If you made it through all three dark romance for beginners books in that order: welcome to the dark side. From here, you can continue reading the Into Darkness series by Navessa Allen, finish the Ruinous Love trilogy by Brynne Weaver, or spiral into our favorite books like Mindf*ck or books like Butcher & Blackbird.

And if you didn’t? That’s totally valid. Maybe try some gothic romance or dark academia next. Still edgy, just less blood spatter.
