Is Rule by Jay Crownover worth the hype? My take

I side-eye new adult, but Rule by Jay Crownover won me over. Here’s why the romance hit and the drama mostly worked.

Is it possible to be down bad for a tattooed bad boy who’s also emotionally wrecked and secretly soft? Because that is the exact spell this story is casting. Rule by Jay Crownover is the kind of opposites attract romance that looks like it’s here for drama, but sneaks in a surprisingly grounded, character driven love story. If you like messy feelings, family pressure, and chemistry that’s a little dangerous, you’re in the right place. And if you’re also someone who side-eyes “new adult” unless it comes with receipts, same. Let’s get into it.

What is Rule by Jay Crownover about?

Shaw has loved Rule forever, even when he insists she’s off limits and “too good” for his world. After one tipsy night flips their dynamic, they’re forced to face the truth: this isn’t a crush, it’s real. Between family expectations, old grief, and a threat from Shaw’s past, they have to decide if love can survive the fallout.

Rule by Jay Crownover Book Review

I was not expecting to like RULE as much as I did.  Don’t know why because this book came highly recommended.  Well, I do know why, I tend to stay away from new adult unless it comes recommended by trusted people.  And even then, I’m weary.  RULE read more like a contemporary romance than a new adult story.  And that had a lot to do with the fact the characters are pretty mature for their age.  Then again they’ve been through a lot.

First there’s Rule.  He’s been always put down by his family because he looks different.  He’s a tattoo artist, wears his hair in a mohawk which he colors based on his mood, sometimes it’s pink.  He’s got tattoos everywhere and some things are pierced. *wink, wink*  That’s not the norm his family want to see.  He had a twin brother who died in an accident.  He was the perfect son.  His other brother is in the military.  So Rule is the odd man out.  His relationship with his family is strained at best.  And the only reason he puts up with seeing them is because childhood friend Shaw Landon makes it her mission to bring Rule home every week.

Shaw comes from a wealthy family that has never given her the love she needed.  So she’s been adopted into Rule’s family.  Especially being that she was dating Rule’s twin for years.  Or was she really?  Shaw has had a crush on Rule since she could remember but he never pays her any mind.  Until one night where she just goes for it with some help from alcohol.

There’s a bit of suspense element in the story when Shaw’s perfect society ex boyfriend turns crazy stalker.  I thought that was interesting, although I don’t think the story needed the extra drama.  I was completely sold on the main story developing.  The acceptance that both Rule and Shaw had to come to.  Their relationship which was at times combustible.  I think this group of guys looks tougher than they really are.  But there’s still enough sexy bad boys there to make my heart beat fast.  And Rule is definitely at the top of that list!

Movie adaptation: Marked Men: Rule + Shaw

If you’re a fan of adaptations, Rule by Jay Crownover was adapted into a 2025 film called Marked Men: Rule + Shaw (Marked Men in some places). It’s directed by Nick Cassavetes, and it stars Chase Stokes as Rule Archer and Sydney Taylor as Shaw Landon.

Where to find it: It’s available on Prime Video.

About the Marked Men series by Jay Crownover

Rule is Book 1 in Jay Crownover’s Marked Men series, a set of connected romances centered around a tight knit crew and their relationships. Each book follows a different couple, but you still get that satisfying friend group and found family vibe where side characters matter and the world keeps expanding as you go.

Final Thoughts

The “good girl/bad boy” setup could have stayed surface-level, but the story keeps dragging both of them into the light, especially around family pressure and grief. I also appreciated that the characters felt more emotionally aware, which is probably why it read more like contemporary romance to me.

If you’re thinking about picking it up, Rule by Jay Crownover is a solid bet when you want spice and heart, and you don’t mind a little mess along the way. Also, I’m forever tickled by a hero who’s loud on the outside and quietly wrecked on the inside, then acts surprised when someone sees through it. Classic.
