The romance reading challenge where you pick your major, choose from 5 departments, and build your perfect 2026 TBR. Free guidebook and Notion tracker included.

Romanceopoly 2026 Announcement

Romance books and board games…two things we adore. We wanted to create a romance reading challenge that combined the fun of a board game with our love of romance books and all the wonderful subgenres it contains. Something that was visual and interactive but easy to dive into.

And so, in a gloomy castle, aka terraced house in England and a condo in Florida, with a great Wi-Fi signal, a flash of lightning and much evil cackling the Romanceopoly 2026 reading challenge was born. Whether you are an old hand with romance or you are new to the genre, we thought this would be a fantastic way to discover new books and authors and catch up on things that have been languishing on the TBR. Join us for our sixth year of the Romanceopoly yearly reading challenge.

What Is Romanceopoly 2026 Reading Challenge?

This year, Romanceopoly is transforming into the Romanceopoly U campus. You read that right, this year it’s a university theme. There will be a campus themed map with different departments. But the biggest change yet is that you don’t have to complete the whole year. This is a choose your own path challenge. A way to truly customize Romanceopoly to read what you love the most. But still sprinkle in some things that push your comfort zone.

What Is Romanceopoly University?

Romanceopoly U is a year-long romance reading challenge where you “enroll” in classes (prompts) that actually match romance-reader brain chemistry.

The baseline is 20 books to graduate, structured like a degree:

  • 5 Core Curriculum classes (required for everyone)
  • 5 Major classes (you choose your department)
  • 5 Minor classes (you choose a second department)
  • 5 Electives (you cherry-pick prompts from the remaining departments)

Optional add-ons (for the overachievers, the competitive gremlins, and the “I can totally read 120 romances in a year” crowd):

  • Clubs (each adds 4 prompts)
  • Seasonal Sports Events (each adds 4 prompts and they’re tied to a season)
  • Monthly Study Sessions (book club energy)

How to Play Romanceopoly 2026

You can customize everything! This challenge works however you want. But here are some general ground rules to know first:

  • Roll the Dice: Want to keep it spontaneous? Roll dice and move through the street in the map to pick your next prompt.
  • Prefer to go in order? Start from the Core Curriculum and then work your way either from the left or right of the map through only the departments and electives you choose. All the roads loop back into the middle area so you can move through the departments.
  • Want to DNF a book? No problem. Switch it out. Prefer to completely drop a class? That’s ok too. Switch it for any other on the map.
  • Double Dip! For the first time we are allowing you to double dip. Meaning use the same book for multiple prompts.

Romanceopoly 2026 Departments

Here’s what you’ll be reading in each department:

  • Romantic Arts (Contemporary): banter, meet-cutes, fake dating, workplace tension, small towns, second chances.
  • Paranormal Studies: vampires, shifters, ghosts, demons, fated mates (fangs/claws/otherworldly energy encouraged).
  • Fantasy Theory: romantasy + fantasy romance: fae courts, royalty, portals/multiverse chaos, warlords, slow burn tension.
  • Historical Studies: scandal + yearning: dukes, love letters, Highlanders, time travel, rebellious heroines.
  • Dark Psychology: dark romance + gothic tension: obsession, power games, criminals, toxic devotion (affectionately), morally gray chaos.

Deep dive posts into each department (COMING SOON)

Optional Reading

If you want to read more than the 20 credits to graduate for the year, then we have some optional parts of Romanceopoly 2026 that you can add in to your plan.

Clubs

There are 4 clubs you can join. Each one adds 4 prompts to your tally. No set dates for when you read them.

  • Hearts & Spoons Club: Cozy contemporary romance think grumpy/sunshine, small town, cinnamon roll heroes, lots of comfort reads.
  • Nightshade Society: Gothic + paranormal romance with witches, curses, haunted houses, dark academia vibes, spooky slow burns.
  • Secret Stacks: Kindle Unlimited + “hidden gem” romance, think mafia, dark romance, romantic suspense, high-spice recs.
  • Theta Tau Theta (ΤΤΘ): Dark romance + taboo-leaning tropes including all the red flags, morally gray leads, obsessive dynamics, high spice.

Seasonal Events

Each season brings a couple of special sports league. There will be 1 event per season (3 months) and each will add 4 prompts to your tally should you choose to join.

Mark your calendars:

  • Frostbitten Trials: January through March 2026
  • Bloom & Brawl Games: April through June 2026
  • Heatwave Cup: July through September 2026
  • Final Frenze Cup: October through December 2026

Study Sessions

This is the optional book club! We will pick a book every single month (that also fits other prompts within the challenge) and you can read along with us. Discussions on Fable and Discord. And we’ve also added a prompt in case you are not able to get the specified book. You can find all the info about the Romanceopoly 2026 Study Sessions here. Besides reading, we are also adding a bookish craft each month that you can do with us! Bookmark that page to stay up to date with what’s happening.

Romanceopoly 2026 Resources

We’ve got tons of resources for you to do the Romanceopoly 2026 reading challenge.

  1. Printable and digital resources: Download the board, prompts, cards and guidebook, plus promotional material about the challenge.
  2. Notion Romancepoly Tracker: I built a loaded interactive tracker for this year. Duplicate it in your own Notion account and start filling it in.

Is Romanceopoly 2026 on Storygraph?

Yes! But we’ve had to break up the challenge into single challenges by department so you can hit 100% completionNote: StoryGraph doesn’t have a clean way to track your Electives as “electives,” so you may have to track those separately or use Storygraph but you won’t get 100% competition on those. These are all the individual Storygraph challenges:

FAQ

Can one book count for multiple prompts?
Yes. Double-dipping is allowed. This is not a police state.

Do audiobooks count?
Absolutely.

Can I change my major/minor later?
Yep. Transfer credits are real and we support your journey.

Can I DNF?
Yes. Protect your peace. Swap the book and move on.

Will there be a Notion tutorial?
Yes, watch the full walkthrough tutorial.

How do I move around the board?
Start from the Registrar’s Office then use the center circle road to move around Core Curriculum and from there you’ll visit the loop road of whatever departments you select. If there’s a department you’re not doing any classes in, you don’t need to go into it.

  1. I’m so excited for the new year of Romanceopoly and all the fabulous innovations. You gals put a great deal of time and effort in to make it a special challenge. Thanks so much!

  2. This looks beyond amazing! You did such an incredible job here! I can’t wait to decide how I want to do it!

  3. My eyes are the size of a kid seeing Disney World for the first time. This is amazing, Francesca and Suzanne! Thank you so much for putting in time and effort to make a fun challenge with the Uni theme.

I’m in! I’ll major in Historical Studies and Minor in Paranormal Studies. Hearts and Spoons will be my club and I’m sure you’ll catch me at all the events. 🙂

  4. Yayy! This new university themed challenge is so creative and exciting, I can’t wait to start. Im loving all the courses but Im definitely leaning into the Dark Psychology as my major and Romantic Arts as my minor. Of course with also a sprinkle of Fantasy Theory as my electives. Let the new year begin!!

  5. This is very vast and impressive, will definitely be joining in. First with Paranormal Major with minor in Fantasy theory

  6. I’m confused is this an APP or just following your guidebook and texting on Fable? I’m not sure how you’re supposed to work through this, how do you know and I know that things are being completed???
This will be the very first time I have touched this challenge.

    1. Hi Kathy, welcome! You can choose to track with the guidebook (either printed or digital importing it on a note-taking app like GoodNotes – that allows you to write on it digitally). Or you can use the Notion tracker linked. This isn’t an app but it’ll almost work like an app inside of Notion (you’d just need a free Notion account to duplicate it). And if neither of those work, you can also track on Storygraph. The individual links to the challenge pieces on there are in the post. I’ve also seen people use the prompt cards (in the Google Drive) print them out and use them in a type of TBR Jar. Choose the one that works best for you. 😉 And the community on Fable is for interaction and chatting throughout the challenge. Plus we will have the monthly study sessions announced there if you want to join any. But please let me know if there’s anything you need me to clarify.

  7. Paranormal Studies and fantasy theory. With a couple of the others. First time doing something like this and I am pretty excited. I have tons of books that fit all of these prompts but uncertain on how to add them.

  8. This challenge is absolutely wild in the very best way! You guys have put in so much work, it’s really mind-blowing. Thank you so much for creating it!!

My plan is to Major in Fantasy Theory and Minor in Paranormal Studies. I’m also planning on joining all the clubs and events. I fear this might be a little too ambitious but go big or go home right!? At the moment I’ll need to read 52 books. I blogged the 2025 Romanceopoly and plan on doing the same in 2026. I have all 52 posts templated, now I just need to pick some books, that’s always the hardest part! Roll on January!!!

    1. I love the ambition though!! If you did the whole board + events and holidates in 2025 then that is technically around the same number of books. Also 2026 you can double and triple up books, so you may be able to do the prompts with less books 😉

  9. Hi! My first time here and this year I plan on giving romance a fair chance instead of brushing it off as I normally do 🫣 I’ll be tracking on Storygraph but just to make sure I’m on the same page as the rest of the participants, the only rules for every book are that each entry MUST have the “romance” genre tag and fit the required prompt, right? Is there anything else I’m missing? 🥲

    1. That’s basically it. Most prompts will already give you an idea of what sub-genre of romance it is, although some it doesn’t so any romance that fits the prompt works. You’re not missing anything 😉 Welcome! And I hope you find some things that become favorites.

  10. I have a quick question about the guidebook book as I didn’t see anything about them. Is there any difference between the different hair colors, or is it just a fun thing to choose based on your hair color?

  11. Probably will major in Dark Psychology and minor in Romantic Arts and then I am definitely considering some clubs

  12. I’ve just found you and I can’t wait to dive in, this looks like so much fun. I am going to be doing my major in Paranormal studies with a minor in Dark Psychology. Love my Dark and Bite-y Romances!

    1. You can grab the resources (map, guidebook, prompt cards etc) and use them digitally or print them out. You can also track via Storygraph. And the chat for community will be either on Discord or Fable depending on your choosing. Also, you can stay up to date via the newsletter for the challenge. All these are linked in the post.

  13. Wow, this is amazing.
My daughter and me will join!

I will do a major in Paranormal studies with a minor in Dark Psychology, with some others sprinkled in.

I wanted to join the Discord server, but get the notification that the link is expired. Can you please check that?

  14. Absolute chaos goblin here!! I have a major in romantic arts, minor in fantasy theory, and might as well count paranormal studies as a dual minor since I am doing almost all my electives from there. The Notion template is GIVING!! So helpful, can’t wait for January. When should we expect the announcement for the January “study session” book pick? Also the Discord link still isn’t working for me 🙁
