Sex Toys … Through the Ages

How many of us have our 8 inches of fun stashed in our bedside table? Or some Ben Wa balls hidden in the knicker draw or even (in Fran’s case) a few chests of every knick knack, lube and outfit that LoveHoney and Ann Summers have to offer slid under the bed?
sextoysthruagesI imagine most of us have a little something when a real life penis either isn’t around or just isn’t doing its job properly, but…were our ancestors doing the same thing? Did Eve use her special handcrafted 10 inch dildo when Adam’s little fig leaf wasn’t transporting her to heaven and back?
Well according to my extensive and in depth research (I googled!) the answer is probably….YES! Sexy toys have been around it seems for as long as women haven’t been entirely satisfied, the first one seeming to pop up (pun intended) in the early Stone Age (30,000 years ago) and made of stiltstone. The Ancient Greeks loved them, they called them Olisbos and there are many references to them in plays, poems and pottery. Moving on to the 19th century, they were actually prescribed by Doctors as a cure for anxiety and hysteria!
When reading all this information, I was trying to think of any Historical Romance books where any sex toys are used or mentioned… I came up blank..

So Maidens, have you ever come across a Historical Romance where the hero or heroine skillfully wields a sex toy?

  1. Yes… I cannot remember what it was called – it was a piece of erotic romance – I read it almost 20 years ago – their was a young woman learning to be… I think an opera singer and her older, more experienced female mentor introduces her to a dildo… they filled it with milk….

  2. Yes! I have read books with toys. Sarah McCarty’s Hell’s Eight series. Really steamy historicals set in Texas in the 1800s.

  3. It seems to me that in some of Bertrice Small’s historicals (I think is was part of the Skye O’Malley Series) there were sex toys used. I believe it was in some of the Byzantine harems that Skye ended up in. For being older historical romance her books were REALLY HOT.

    1. I forgot to add that Bertrice’s books are what hooked me on romance in my youth.
Oh and more info on sex toys and history can be found at Delilah Marvelle’s blog including the history of the dildo.

      1. Hey Glittergirl, those books do sound sexy! Anything with a girl travelling harem to harem has got to have a little bit of hotness in it 🙂 Lisa Kleypas and Johanna Lindsey are who addicted me to Historical Romance (although not a dildo in sight for those two so far lol!) I will have to check out Bertice’s books 🙂

  4. I can’t remember the title but yes, I’ve read one in the last year where the heroine is giving a glass dildo by a john. He liked to watch her use it. There was no touching between them. It was a great book but I can’t remember what the damn title was.

  5. Untamed Deaire by Lana Dare is the prequel of the Leah Brooke Desire Oklahoma series. Menage and sex toys in the wold west. Oh Yeah!

  6. The only one I can think of right off the top of my head was a Regency romance where the heroine was supposed to be a prostitute, but there was only 1 little problem (she was a virgin). So when she had a new protector (who had need of a prostitute to fulfill his uncle’s demand that he & his brother’s marry and save women in need in order to inherit his money) she had to rid herself of that pesky hymen. Luckily some of the ladies of the brothel were there to help and one had a dildo 🙂 If anyone is interested the book is RUSHED TO THE ALTER by Jane Feather.

  7. I can’t think of the name but I read a book where the couple had a little game of touchy feely in a bathtub. I just kept thinking “wow, you had to have your maid fill that tub, how do you explain that?”. They progressed to bondage. They moved on to public sex. And then they end up on the floor messing around and she uses a dildo on him. My jaw hit the ground. I had never read anything like it. And I haven’t since. This was set in the mid 1800s.

  8. I blog frequently and I really value your information. This short article has trulypeaked my curiosity. I will bookmark your website and keep checking for new info about as soon as a week.I opted in for the Feed as well.

It is usually so pleasant plus stuffed with a great time for me and my workplace peers to go to the blog at minimal three times every week to study with the latest things you have got. Obviously, I’m definitely happy regarding the perfect pointers served by you. Some two points within this post are unequivocally probably the most effective I’ve had.

  10. Most people, when it comes to sex, don’t know what they want until another person shows them. Nevertheless, the best way to discover what and how to pleasure one’s body is through experimentation. And what better way to do this than trying out frisky pleasure toys?

  11. These days sex toys are no longer considered taboo; in fact, an increasing number of adults are becoming open to the use of these little aids. Not only do they provide stimulation and arousal, they also offer a number of benefits.

  13. Using sex toys will help you really learn about yourself. You’ll get first hand knowledge of what you like and don’t like, which in turn, will help you feel more confident when you’re in bed with a partner. And can even have the tendency to roll over to outside of the bedroom.
