Kushiel’s Legacy Readalong: Read the Series With Me
A guided, chapter-by-chapter Kushiel’s Legacy readalong, the fantasy classic by Jacqueline Carey. Join the conversation. Sign up here.

I keep telling people to read Kushiel’s Legacy. I keep watching them back out before chapter one, because the books are enormous and starting a nine hundred page fantasy alone, with nobody to talk to, is the fastest way to quit one. So this time nobody starts alone.
This is a year-long Kushiel’s Legacy readalong, the classic fantasy by Jacqueline Carey. We read it together, small sections each month, at a pace that respects how dense these books actually are.
Here is my honest receipt. This series sat on my to-read shelf for years, and I was intimidated by the exact thing you probably are: the sheer size of it. Four books, each one enormous, thousands of pages before you are through. When I finally took the plunge into the first one, I came out the other side heartbroken and a little speechless. These are not books you read. They are books you experience. I went on well past the original trilogy because I could not let this world go.
So I have read Kushiel’s Dart, Kushiel’s Chosen, and Kushiel’s Avatar. Cassiel’s Servant I am reading for the first time, right alongside you, camera on.
If you tried this series before and bounced off, this is your guided re-entry. If you read it years ago and want to go back with some company, there is a seat for you. And if you have never touched epic fantasy but keep seeing this series recommended in dark romance circles, you are exactly who I built this for. Summer is for slowing down anyway so it’s a great time to start this project.

How the Kushiel’s Legacy readalong works
One book at a time, split into manageable sections. Each month I post a podcast episode with my thoughts and reactions to that section, an email that keeps you on pace, and a think piece on the blog that goes deeper into one theme from the books. You read the section, you listen when you are ready, you come find me on Discord to talk about it.
We start June 23, 2026 and the first discussion is July 31, 2026, and read together from there: one section a month, on the schedule below. The emails go out in real time as we go, so when you sign up you are joining the group live and reading alongside everyone else. You can come and chat on Discord. Fall behind by a chapter or two and that is fine, the posts and episodes stay up for you to catch up.
The reading schedule (by chapter, on purpose)
I am pacing everything by chapter, not page number. The reason is simple: depending on which edition you own, mass market or trade or one of the omnibus reprints, audiobook, etc, your page count will be completely different from mine. Chapter 32 is chapter 32 in every copy. So that is the unit we use.
Each book breaks into roughly equal thirds, about thirty chapters a month. Below is the full schedule, with the dates the live buddy read group is reading toward. The live group kicks off June 23, 2026, and reads a section a month, finishing each one by the date listed so we can talk about it together. If you are joining later, ignore the dates entirely and read at your own pace.

Would you like to save this?
What you are walking into
I would rather tell you up front than have you bounce in chapter three. Kushiel’s Legacy is adult epic fantasy with explicit sexual content, BDSM that is central to the world and the heroine, and real darkness, particularly in Kushiel’s Avatar, which goes to some of the heaviest places in the whole series.
I will be straight with you about that book. The first half was hard for me to read, and I took it in small doses over a couple of months instead of pushing through when I first read it. That is also allowed. It is part of why we are doing this slowly and together. The intensity is the point of these books, not a flaw in them, but you should know it is there before you give a year to it. If that is your thing, you are in excellent company.
Where to start
If you want to get oriented before you commit, start with the Kushiel’s Legacy reading guide. It walks you through the world, the religion, and how the books connect, with no spoilers for the readalong itself.
You only need one book to begin. Get a copy of Kushiel’s Dart, and that is all you need to keep up for the first three months. All four books are currently available on Kindle Unlimited.
If you have already read the trilogy and you want my take before you re-read, my reviews of the first three books are on the site, though fair warning, they are written for people who have finished, so they spoil.
Join the readalong
When you sign up here you enter the readalong list: you’ll get the schedule via email, then one email a month timed to when I drop the podcast discussion, keeping you on pace and sharing some discussion topics.
And once you are signed up, come into the Discord. There is a forum channel for the readalong where we talk through each section as we go, post reactions, and yell about whatever just happened to us. That is where the live conversation lives between episodes, and it is the best part of doing this with a group instead of alone.
Questions before you commit
Do I have to read on the schedule?
For now, mostly, yes, and that is the point. This is a live group reading together on a real calendar, with the emails and episodes timed to each section. The schedule is what keeps us all in the same place at the same time so the conversation actually works. If you slip a chapter or two behind, no problem, everything stays up. But come ready to read with the group.
Which books does the Kushiel’s Legacy readalong cover?
The four-book core: Kushiel’s Dart, Kushiel’s Chosen, and Kushiel’s Avatar, then Cassiel’s Servant. That is roughly a year of reading.
Do I need the rest of the series?
Not for this. We are reading these four. There is more in the world of Terre d’Ange if you fall in love with it, and the reading guide covers all of it, but you do not need any of it to take part.
Is this beginner friendly if I have never read epic fantasy?
This is what I would normally tell people. If you enjoyed Game of Thrones and you’re ok with a dash of BDSM, then you’ll be just fine in this series. It’s epic fantasy with deep political intrigue, real stakes, lyrical writing, and a heroine whose journey will take you through ups and downs. Reading the dense books with structure and company is exactly how people who find them intimidating actually finish them. I was one of those people.
What if I fall behind?
Catch up when you can. A chapter or two behind the group is nothing, and every post and episode stays up so you can close the gap. The schedule is there to keep us reading together, not to make anyone feel behind.
Final Thoughts
Sign up for the Kushiel’s Legacy readalong, read Kushiel’s Dart, and come tell me what you think when the first episode drops. Do not go in with preconceived ideas of what to expect. Let it flow, let it swing your emotions, and bring your reactions to the Discord when you come up for air. That is the whole ask.
