We are finally in peak reading season, at least for me. The vibes and the releases are all perfect to snuggle in with a blanket and a cup of coffee or tea and just forget about the world outside for a little while. There’s also such variety in fall reading, it’s a whole spectrum. You can go from super cute and cozy comfort to extremely dark and gothic. In the same day sometimes. Maybe that’s just me.

But what I do know is that if you’re planning out your TBR, you’ll want to mark these 2026 fall book releases on there, because there’s so many unique and fun stories coming out right now.

Most Anticipated 2026 Fall Book Releases

One of the things I’m most excited about is that we are officially in the era of the paranormal comeback and I am back to thriving. Whether that is in a fantasy setting or the real world, all things that go bump in the night are starting to come out and making me so happy. Even dark academia, which I love to read in the Fall, is getting a paranormal makeover. So here are the 25 books topping my list of 2026 fall book releases I want to read.

I’ve been behind on reading my arcs (it’s a recurring theme on this list and life in general) so I’ve only read one of these already. But these are the ones I am most excited about. This Wretched Alchemy by Tina Mars comes out November 10 and it’s a debut romantasy series. I saw it on social a while back (yes, the character art got me) and it just sounds amazing. I’m partial to books with alchemy in them too. Deadly trials, political intrigue, gods. I’m in. To Dream in Darkness by Ann Liang comes out October 27 and this one I’ve read and loved. It’s a perfect read if you are a fan of c-dramas for sure, but also if you like mythology and falling for a villain. The hero is death and he is coming for the heroine but she makes a bargain to get more time while helping him with a curse. It’s a little dark, a great slow burn, and a lyrical story. And last, Swipe Bite by Alexandra Vasti out also November 10. I am going to be honest, this is Alexandra Vasti and I will read anything she writes (which is usually historical). So needless to say I’m excited to see this take on a vampire dating app.

Romantasy – Dark and Morally Grey 2026 Fall Book Releases

I am actually in the middle of reading The Sweetest Fiend by Raven Kennedy, out September 22, and it’s a romantasy loosely inspired by the legend of the Pied Piper. That part has been interesting but the story itself is a little dark and alluring at the same time. I think this will be a good fit for fans of Carissa Broadbent. I am also excited to try a new to me author with Vices & Virtues by Alexis L. Menard, out November 24. This is a standalone about a witch that resurrects a con man to help defeat an evil god. Past lives and love with a witchy twist sounds just like what a Fall lineup needs. And then there’s Bride of Stone by Lisette Marshall on October 13, which granted was not on anyone’s radars because we are still waiting for The Thornmarked Witch, but we will take a new series by Lisette Marshall. I fell in love with this author last year (so good slow burn enemies to lovers romantasy with great plot) so that means I’ll read anything new she releases. Period.

Romantasy – Myth and Retellings 2026 Fall Book Releases

Continuing on with original fantasy books with a romantic thread that involve mythology and retellings, I’m so excited for these. Queen of Foxes by Jennifer Estep comes out November 10 and it’s a Robin Hood inspired romantasy from a favorite author. Immediately add to the TBR. Thunderstruck by Lissa Layland out November 17 is a Thor and Loki inspired romantasy, debut author, and a dash of environmental activism. And an anticipated sequel for me, For Ever More by Sue Lynn Tan comes out October 27. I recently read Never Ever After and can’t wait to be back in this world of adventure.

And not a romance, but a historical fantasy with myth retelling Bones of Jade, Flesh Like Ice by Gracie Marsden is about a woman making a bargain with a shapeshifting demon, inspired by a Taiwanese myth. That’s dropping November 10.

Romantasy – Academy 2026 Fall Book Releases

Fantasy academia has been thriving this year and I’m not mad at it because I love it. If you’re into Buffy, then a must read series is Harker Academy. Book two, Cursed City by Kate Golden comes out September 29. And The Tarot Trials by Katee Robert, October 20, is an epic fantasy all about deadly trials and tarot magic. Sign me right up because I’m loving the vibes for both.

Paranormal Romance 2026 Fall Book Releases

From fantasy worlds, let’s go to the real world but still with creatures that go bump in the night. Grim Tidings by B.K. Borison is a grim reaper and guardian angel romance out September 15. Perfect for fans of Charmed! Meet Cute Magic by Morgan Elizabeth, out September 8, is about a witch with a curse that needs breaking so she conjures up a ghost and ends up falling for the ghost’s grandson. Morgan Elizabeth always knows how to write an addictive romance and this sounds so cozy. Alma Vampires by Elena Armas comes out November 17 and has all the right vibes of a new adult paranormal romance. An unsuspecting heiress, an Ivy League school, a vampire and a blood debt. I’m kind of hoping this will be a good one for Shadowhunter fans. And finally Doomsdate by Laura Piper Lee out September 15. I mean look at that cover! If that doesn’t make you want to read it, I don’t know what will. It looks so fun and I’m all for making jokes about the end of the world right now.

Historical Romance 2026 Fall Book Releases

The historical romances are definitely a bit more slim pickings this season. It doesn’t seem to be a popular time to release historicals, I wonder why. But the ones we’re getting are feeling atmospheric. Starting with one of my most anticipated of the year, Queen of Lombard Street by Lisa Kleypas, which comes out October 20 and is actually more of a historical fiction novel with a dash of romance. This is about a Victorian female economist determined to open the first women’s bank. Lisa Kleypas always includes her research so well into her novels and I can’t wait to read it. For something a bit lighter, Brown Eyed Girl by Jenny Holiday, out October 27, is a Regency bromantic comedy and definitely the pick if you want to laugh out loud. He wasn’t supposed to be the Earl or the spare but his oldest brothers died in an accident and now here he is. We’ve been following three best friends in this series and I’m really looking forward to seeing this installment. And last, The Gilded Rose by Joanna Shupe comes out October 13 and our heroine is already married to a controlling man. The hero is a wealthy recluse with a wonderful library and determined to help set her free. I am such a fan of Joanna Shupe’s Gilded Age Manhattan romances and I feel they’re coming with a slightly darker touch lately, which I can appreciate. So I’m looking forward to this one.

Contemporary Romance 2026 Fall Book Releases

I’ll be honest, the cozy small town vibe is not big on my list this year. I’m much more likely to watch it on TV (especially some Hallmark Fall movies) but there are some on my radar, nonetheless. A Fall to Remember by Ellie Alexander, out September 1, immediately was on my radar because I’m used to seeing Ellie Alexander’s cozy mysteries instead. But if you’re looking for a Gilmore Girls like, sweet romance (no spice), this is the option for you. Bonfire and Bliss Bookstore by Britanee Nichole, out a little early August 11, went on my TBR because this is an author I’ve been wanting to try and doesn’t that cover look cute? She’s a bookstore owner in a small town, her high school best friend is the hero who is now a struggling author just returned to town. He needs help writing the perfect book boyfriend and she needs a fake date to get the busybodies in town away from her. Deal! And finally, Love Felt Like This by Julie Olivia comes out September 8 and it’s already a fan favorite amongst my friends who are loving it. It’s a grumpy rockstar cozy small town romance.

Horror 2026 Fall Book Releases

To close the vibes out, what is Fall without some good horror. Starting with a favorite author, Incarnate by Alma Katsu is out September 22 and is a reimagining of The Picture of Dorian Grey for the internet age. Alma Katsu can write some good thrills and horror so I’m excited about this one. Another staple in the genre, Milkteeth by Caitlin Starling is out October 20 and is vampire horror. And for a touch of fun, Kiss Slay Replay by Rachel Harrison, out September 1, is about a woman celebrating her best friend’s wedding, except she had a nightmare the night before and now she’s stuck in a time loop repeating the horrors.
