Sometimes you do not just want fantasy. You want candlelit corridors and old churches full of dangerous secrets, maybe court politics or tragic immortals. And ideally someone brooding in the Paris streets.
This list is for that very specific mood.
These are not romantasy books, but they all have romance in them. More importantly, these are books where the French inspiration actually delivers through the setting, atmosphere, history, culture, politics, or overall mood.
Some are set in Paris. Some are just France coded. But all of these French inspired fantasy books have that atmosphere that is full of elegance, drama and danger.

French Inspired Fantasy Books I Recommend

Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey
If you are looking for a French inspired fantasy book that is full of court intrigue, politics, religion but also sensuality and emotional damage, then Kushiel’s Dart is the one for you.
This is an epic fantasy with a romantic thread throughout the series but where the sensuality is woven into the deepest fibers of the world building. Phèdre is one of those heroines that is larger than life and carries this story so well. We follow her from childhood into a world of service, power, pain and political danger and watching her grow into her strength is the best part of this story.
While the page count can feel intimidating, the world building, the epic romance and the characters are totally worth it. Terre d’Ange is lush, complicated and also deeply France inspired. Just know this one is intense.
Read it for:Â court intrigue, epic fantasy, lyrical writing, sensual politics.

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin
Serpent & Dove gives you witches, witch hunters, forced marriage, religious conflict, and a French inspired fantasy city where being a witch is very much not a safe choice.
Lou is a witch hiding in Cesarine, doing whatever she has to do to survive. Reid is a Chasseur, a captain trained to hunt witches and believe they are evil. Naturally, they end up forced into marriage.
This is YA, but it leans older, with strong romantic tension and a world that has a bit of Salem witch trial energy filtered through this French inspired setting. I loved the concept of the Chasseurs and the way faith, fear, and power shape the conflict. The romance is slow burn, the banter is perfect, and I was very much rooting for the truth to come out and wreck everyone’s lives.
Read it for: witches, enemies to lovers, forced marriage, banter, religious tension, and slow burn fantasy romance.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is another epic fantasy with romance. We start in 18th century France where Addie makes a deal to escape a life that is expected of her. The cost is brutal: no one remembers her. From there we get her story, living for centuries leaving traces behind in art and stories, until one day someone finally remembers her.
This is a beautifully enchanting book, it is melancholic and it also broke my heart. It reads like a mix of historical fiction, contemporary fiction, romance and fantasy all rolled into one. Needless to say, I was hooked from the beginning.
Read it for: 18th century France, immortality, tragic romance, art, memory, and beautifully painful vibes.

Die for Me by Amy Plum
Paris, art museums, cafés, grief, immortal boys, and classic old school YA paranormal romance. Die for Me is such a fun pick.
After losing her parents, Kate moves to Paris with her sister and tries to rebuild her life. She spends her time in cafés, galleries, and museums until she meets Vincent, who is mysterious, gorgeous, and definitely not just a normal French boy.
Vincent is a revenant, an immortal who dies again and again to save others. I loved that concept because it gives the supernatural romance a different spin. This has that early 2010s paranormal romance feel, but the Paris setting and revenant mythology make it stand out.
Read it for: Paris atmosphere, immortal romance, YA paranormal nostalgia, found family and grief.
French-Adjacent Gothic Fantasy

The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh
This absolutely fits the French inspired fantasy mood of this list because of its Parisian heroine, New Orleans setting, gothic atmosphere, vampires, secrets, and the dangerous glamour of the Court of the Lions.
Perfect for readers who want the French influence through old New Orleans. You’re not wandering through art museums and instead you get vampires, secret societies and Catholic gothic vibes. The series later expands into werewolves, fey, magic, and more.
Read it for: vampires, gothic New Orleans, a Parisian heroine, secret societies, dangerous romance vibes, and French adjacent atmosphere.
French Inspired Fantasy Books on my TBR

The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
This one is on my TBR first of all because it’s Silvia Moreno Garcia, but also because it sounds like the side of scandalous but elegant of a French inspired fantasy book. The Beautiful Ones has telekinesis, social expectations, romance, betrayal and high-society drama.
It feels like the perfect pick for when the mood is all about polished people making messy life choices.
Add it to your TBR for: fantasy with some romance, scandal, telekinesis, and elegance.

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi
The Gilded Wolves is on my TBR because it’s set in 1889 Paris plus I love a good historical fantasy. If you’re into adventure, this is a great option too. It promises treasure hunts, secret societies, found family and glamour.
Add it to your TBR for: 1889 Paris, secret societies, treasure hunting, found family, decadence, and fantasy adventure.

Final Thoughts
When you’re looking for a French inspired fantasy, that can mean a lot of things. The vibes shift wildly from Paris cafés, witch trials, court politics, scandal, immortal bargains, and a fantasy kingdom that’s also dangerous. The key is that the atmosphere has to actually be there.
While these are not romantasy, they do deliver romance, fantasy, and French vibes in different ways. Choose the books based on the mood you want: witchy, immortal heartbreak, paranormal Paris, or full political fantasy drama.
