37 Best May 2026 Book Releases Everyone Will Be Talking About

Looking for the best May 2026 book releases? Here are the romance, fantasy, mystery, YA, and paranormal books to add to your TBR this month.

May 2026 Book Releases

May is going to be an amazing month for new book releases. I started putting this list together with the books I can’t wait to read, and very quickly realized I was not going to keep it to a reasonable number. I still had to leave a bunch out, which honestly just proves how many good May 2026 book releases we have to choose from. And you know me, you probably won’t find a lot of the “big” releases that everyone else is talking about here. I’m sure you’ve seen those anyway. So let’s get into the books that caught my eye this month.

My Top 4 May 2026 Book Releases

I know you read that title and you’re probably thinking, what do you mean 37 books? We should be narrowing this down. Believe me I tried. There are just so many amazing books releasing in May and I’ve had the opportunity to read a few already. I also had a hard time narrowing my top 3 down, so it’s now a top 4 (and I really wanted a top 5). So here we are.

Best May 2026 Book Releases

Legacy of Desire by Larissa Ione

The daughter of the horseman of the Apocalypse, War, fighting and falling in love with her two demon best friends. I don’t read blurbs much anymore and I was just so pleasantly surprised to see the multiple love interest angle. I’ve been really enjoying these next gen stories, but not only because of the cameos or knowing who the parents are. They actually deliver fun and action packed paranormal romances that keep you on the edge of your seat. And Legacy of Desire is no different.

The Last Lady B by Eloisa James

What can I say? This book has everything I love. It’s gothic, witty, has a brooding hero, a pet piglet and even ghosts. This has the classic Eloisa James humor and maybe a little less classic first person POV. But it is certainly a fun time.

A Curse of Beasts and Magic by Jeaniene Frost

If you’ve been missing the specific urban fantasy flavor that Jeaniene Frost delivers, then this is a must read. It honestly felt like being back in Night Huntress at times, or even the Fever series as the heroine discovers the paranormal world. We have a billionaire that is teaching her but also wanting to use her power? I knew when I heard this was a Beauty and the Beast reversed that it would be amazing, and it didn’t disappoint.

In Your Court by Kit Haley

If you’re missing Heated Rivalry, just pick up this book. Seriously. Replace hockey with tennis and you’re set. The only thing I will say this is different is there wasn’t as much fighting of feelings in this one, which felt less angsty. But overall, it’s an unputdownable read with lovable and adorable characters. Low angst, good spice and enough sport.

Now for the rest of the books you need on your radar, because I have even more to shout about. Did I mention I really struggled narrowing down this month’s list? Lets get into it.

Fantasy, Paranormal & Monster Romance May 2026 Book Releases

You know this is where my soul lies. Whether it’s funny or dark and twisted, if its out of this world I’m there.

Urban Fantasy and Sci Fi May 2026 Book Releases

Urban Fantasy May 2026 Book Releases

I think it goes without saying that Archangel’s Eternity by Nalini Singh should be on your radar. While I am behind on this series and hope to catch up this year, I can’t leave this one out because there’s nothing quite like a Nalini book. And just look at that cover! A new one that snuck on my radar is A Dark and Wild Wood by Sarah Nicole Lemon because it seems like the perfect dark and twisted vibe. Inspired by the tale of Bluebeard to deliver a gothic fairy tale. And lastly, The Last Contract of Isako by Fonda Lee. I haven’t read this author but how cool does this sound: a standalone dystopian about a battle worn corporate samurai on a last mission. We love a badass female and a swordswoman at that. Sign me up.

Paranormal Romance May 2026 Book Releases

Paranormal Romance May 2026 Book Releases

Here is where we can have some fun, right? Starting with There’s Something Fishy About My Boyfriend by Gloria Duke because… gym, tan, merman. My millennial heart is laughing at the Jersey Shore and I can’t help but need this in my life. For something a bit darker we have the third book in the Original Sinners series, Beautiful Redeemer by Katie Ballenger. I haven’t started this series yet but if you’re looking for a Lucifer story that sounds like it’s packed with action and real stakes, this may be a series to binge. I do think it’s just a trilogy so it should be complete this month. And closing it out with another cute vampire romance, Just My Blood Type by Katherine Dyson. I read a book by this author in April and it was a delightful read especially if you like low angst and cutesy quirky vampire. This is actually a great paranormal romance for fans of Abby Jimenez.

Fantasy Romance May 2026 Book Releases

Fantasy Romance May 2026 Book Releases

I am definitely behind reading Donna Grant and haven’t started this series but I know she delivers world building like no other. Burning Sea by Donna Grant is the fifth book in the Elven Kingdoms series. Great excuse to binge if you haven’t read them like me. But I did read and loved The Fake Divination Offense by Sara Raasch. When I tell you as soon as I started reading this I was sat and glued in. I loved the premise, the characters, everything. Sports romance between a player and cheerleader that starts as a PR relationship. The romcom vibes delivered with this one. And lastly on my list for this genre is Strange Familiars by Keshe Chow perfect for the dark academia romantasy girlies. But I love the angle that this is about students in magical veterinary science. I cannot wait to read it.

Monster Romance May 2026 Book Releases

Monster Romance May 2026 Book Releases

I couldn’t leave out my monsters because I saw a lot of fun things coming. Starting with Moon Bite by Clio Evans. I always say I need to read Clio Evans, and then forget. This is a small town omegaverse with a grumpy werewolf bodyguard that ends up being her fated mate. Catnip, I tell you. Then Satyrday Night Fever by Honey Phillips honestly got me on the title and cover alone. I haven’t read a satyr romance in such a long time. Maybe even a decade. And then The Gargoyle and the Lady by Sara Ivy Hill, this is another author I’ve had on my list to try and I love me a good gargoyle romance.

Mystery, Thriller & Cozy Mystery May 2026 Book Releases

But especially as the summer gets closer, I gravitate towards thrillers and mysteries too. And we got some great ones on the horizon.

Mystery/Thrillers May 2026 Book Releases

Mystery/Thrillers May 2026 Book Releases

Kicking things with off with queen Nora herself. The Final Target by Nora Roberts sounds so good. It’s about a young debut author and her obsessive fan. I do love those stories about stalkers reader fans. Please don’t do that to authors in real life. Followed by one of my favorite authors and another installment in one of my favorite historical mystery series. An Ordinary Sort of Evil by Kelley Armstrong is a time travel mystery where we find a modern day female detective that has been stuck in the past solving crimes. It’s just as addictive as it sounds. And another favorite author here at Under the Covers has a new book that just screams summer read to me. You Can Tell Me by Melinda Leigh is the first in the Olivia Cruz series. Olivia is also a writer and her podcaster friend goes missing.

Cozy Mystery May 2026 Book Releases

Cozy Mystery May 2026 Book Releases

Listen, you will always get me with a foodie cozy mystery and Hot Wings and Homicide by Carmela Dutra is exactly the right fit. This is a food truck mystery! I haven’t read this one but I see it’s a good fit for fans of Joanne Fluke. An author I do love and a series I have enjoyed is Moonlight Murder by Uzma Jalaluddin as she continues her Detective Aunty series. Perfectly adorable. Yes, I saw adorable about murder. Not the murder itself though! And for a dose of a little more cozy mystery romance we have A Zoom with a View by Jess Cannon. I can’t lie, I’m a sucker for a good cover.

Contemporary Romance & Women’s Fiction May 2026 Book Releases

The contemporaries were also delivering but I somehow ended up with very different flavors of contemporary romance. However, there are so many contemporary romances releasing in May and by some of the big names in the genre.

Contemporary Romance May 2026 Book Releases

Contemporary Romance May 2026 Book Releases

I’m gonna start off with The Rule of Three by Sara Cate because she’s become my go to when it comes to erotic romance and I can’t wait to read this one. Then My Darling Reverie by H.D. Carlton which is the second and conclusion in the Hollow Graves duet. If you are a dark romance reader, then you need no introduction to H.D. Carlton. I haven’t read this duology but if you want intense, this is your pick. And By the Bootstraps by Alexa Martin is the perfect level of sweetness and start over energy that I want for spring.

Women’s Fiction May 2026 Book Releases

Women's Fiction May 2026 Book Releases

Women’s fiction is another genre that is great for me in the summer so I’ll be ear-marking these for when the sun is really beating down on me. But who am I kidding, I’ll be inside in the AC reading them. Starting with The Summer Share by Jenn McKinlay because I think she always delivers the best mix of women’s fiction and romance while delivering a heartfelt story. Both main characters inherit a rundown seaside home and have to work together to fix it. I’m there! Then one of my go-tos for summer reading. Five-Star Summer by Sarah Morgan is all about restoring a five star Cornish hotel. I do see the theme and I’m not mad at it. And last there’s Dolly All the Time by Annabel Monaghan with a single mother moving back home to help save her father’s house and ends up in a fake relationship with a wealthy workaholic. Plus, I do love stories on a boat and the cover delivered that.

Historical Romance May 2026 Book Releases

Historical Romance May 2026 Book Releases

The historical romances are bringing all the good authors. Another genre I had to narrow down! But let’s start with The Dove and the Rogue by Harper St. George bringing up an American heiress wanting to become an opera singer entering a marriage of convenience with a rakish duke to save her sister. Another author I’ve recently discovered has a new book in a series I haven’t started, but it sounds so good. Curves for the Scandalous Duke by Kathleen Ayers sounds romcom-y in the best way. The heroine is trying to recover a brooch from a scandalous duke because it’s the only inheritance her father left her. They’re enemies, he falls first. I can’t wait for the hijinks. And finally Earl of Fire by Felicity Niven and I’m so curious about this one because the hero is not a single dad, he’s a single granddad. And his granddaughter is looking for a new grandma. I’ll definitely be adding this one to my TBR stat.

Queer Romance May 2026 Book Releases

Queer Romance May 2026 Book Releases

The queer romances were also delivering this month and I thought they deserved a special shoutout. Starting with the beautiful cover of Bromantasy by Máire Roche. This is a cozy queer fantasy about platonic best friends going on an epic quest. Then for the Jane Austen fans, The Miseducation of Caroline Bingley by Linz McLeod is the romance of Caroline Bingley after being passed over by Mr. Darcy and her romance with Mr. Darcy’s sister. And closing out with A Star-Cursed Heart by Annie Mare. I’ve only read Annie Mare’s cozy mysteries but I’m so excited for this one. It’s got Salem witch trials vibes, mortal enemies and a curse they have to break.

Young Adult May 2026 Book Releases

Young Adult May 2026 Book Releases

If you are a historical romance lover then you’ll want to add Behind Five Willows by June Hur. This is an homage to Pride and Prejudice set in historical Korea. As a Jane Austen fan, I am so ready to see this story unfold. Then Storm Breaker by Nisha J. Tuli which is marketed as a slow burn dystopian for fans of the Hunger Games and it’s already optioned for TV by Amazon Studios. I’ve been loving all the dystopian coming out so this one if the highest on my list for the month. And closing out with Rolls and Rivalry by Kristy Boyce for anyone that loves gaming romance and Dungeons & Dragons. Funny enough this is the second title this month on this list that has D&D vibes. Bring it on.

So Many Books in May

And so little time. I know it can be overwhelming to add so many books that sound amazing to your TBR. But let’s be honest. Adding books to your TBR and reading them are two separate hobbies, right? It’s always good to have amazing things you want to read so you are never left without something that matches your mood in that moment. But also, let’s not make it stressful if we don’t get around to our full list. I know I don’t.
