15 Post Apocalyptic Books for the Hunger Games Romance Yearning

books like hunger games

Sunrise on the Reaping hits theaters November 20 and the Hunger Games is everywhere again. Listen, nobody is happier than me about that. But that also makes me crave more end of the world romance where the stakes couldn’t be higher. Two people with every reason to trust no one but choosing each other anyway while their world falls apart. CATNIP!

I will never say no to that romance and I couldn’t be happier that dystopian romance and post apocalyptic books are coming back. They’ve been rising again in the past few years, I even made the video below after Silver Elite by Dani Francis didn’t quite scratch the itch for an adult dystopian romance. So if you’ve been looking for the perfect book that brings back those classic vibes, including a dystopian prison romance with the most Hunger Games energy I’ve read in years, you’re in the right place.

Post apocalyptic books with the Hunger Games feeling

Start here if you want the whole vibe: a system built to kill you and someone you were never supposed to trust standing next to you.

To Cage a Wild Bird by Brooke Fast

To Cage a Wild Bird by Brooke Fast

This is the one I mentioned before. You HAVE to read it. It’s a debut dystopian romance that feels like The Hunger Games mashed with Throne of Glass and it blew me away. Basically, it’s the Hunger Games for adults.

Raven is a notorious bounty hunter and when her little brother gets sentenced to Endlock, she gets herself thrown into the prison too. Endlock is brutal. The government lets the rich elite pay to hunt the prisoners on select days. So now she’s fighting to protect him, fighting to survive, and trying not to fall for the prison guard she should absolutely hate.

I’m not gonna lie, this book hurt. It’s violent, it’s intense, it’s full of found family, and even though I figured out the twist that was coming, watching it unfold still made me emotional. If you liked Silver Elite, or didn’t, this one does it better. It’s book one in the Divided Fates series and I’m desperate for book two.

Kingdom of Tomorrow by Gena Showalter

Kingdom of Tomorrow by Gena Showalter

If you read Silver Elite and didn’t love it, this is the one I’d recommend next. It scratches a similar itch and it worked so much better for me. It’s book one in the Book of Arden series.

It starts off very much a dystopian world. A virus has been infecting people and the government has a military force whose whole job is hunting down the infected. Arden’s mother caught it and recovered, but the medical debt means Arden can’t go study where she wants, so she takes the government’s offer to pay it off by serving in those forces, knowing she may not make it. Before she goes, she has half a moment with a guy and then he turns up at her training as a medic.

Like any good dystopian, it brings real world issues into the story, like government oversight and bodily autonomy, and it gets more supernatural as it goes, with gods and heavenly artifacts. I got hooked on this world fast, and book two, Kingdom of Today, is already out.

Poison Princess by Kresley Cole

Poison Princess by Kresley Cole

Yes, the Arcana Chronicles is technically YA. But it’s YA with adult vibes. It’s also the series Silver Elite wishes it could be, in my opinion, and it gets darker and steamier as the books go on. By book three it’s in much messier territory.

Poison Princess opens on a world that has just been destroyed by an apocalyptic event and every major character is the literal embodiment of a tarot card. They each have their own powers and they’re thrown into a Hunger Games style fight to the death. Evie is coming to terms with her own powers while dealing with trauma, visions and a love triangle.

On one side there’s Jack, the Cajun bad boy, rough around the edges and fiercely loyal. On the other there’s Death, one of the Arcana. Also a bad boy, also enemies to lovers, and one of the most excruciating love triangles you can imagine. I could not decide between those two guys and you should have to suffer through it the way I did.

I’ve been raving about this series for years, and my Arcana Chronicles series guide has every book in order.

Coldwire by Chloe Gong

Coldwire by Chloe Gong

Coldwire is YA and there’s only a slight little bit of romance, so come for the rebellion and the conspiracy. I picked up the audiobook the week it came out, listened while I was playing with my planner and it ended up one of my favorite audiobooks of 2025.

The real world has gone to hell, so most people live plugged into a virtual reality, a little Matrix style. There are two soldiers, one online and one in real life. Eirale works for the corporation that oversees everything until the rebel she’s hunting frames her and forces her to spy for him, and Lia gets paired with her academic nemesis for a mission that goes wrong. Slowly they both realize they’re part of the same conspiracy.

It’s almost 500 pages and it ends on a cliffhanger. This needs to be a movie like yesterday and I cannot wait for book two.

Because I Killed Him by Edith Birde

Because I Killed Him by Edith Birde

This one has been a huge Booktok hit and of course I got swept up in the hype and read it. It’s book one in The Nine Gentlemen, written by two sisters under one pen name.

In the Civilized World everyone is rich, but your blood color decides your place, and the rules about speech, dress and posture are enforced with public beheadings. Loredana is a low-citizen and a former fencing prodigy who lost the right to carry weapons after she killed a high-citizen in a locker room attack. The courts erased his death to protect his family’s honor. Now she’s at Grandmaster University, where some classmates demand her execution, others hunt her for sport, and by law she can’t fight back. Her only protection is Edmund Prew, a high-citizen whose family has been feuding with hers for years, until a lost bet forces him to keep her in his inner circle. The man she killed was his cousin.

All of that danger comes wrapped in 1920s Gatsby glamour. It’s a slow burn with very little spice, and it’s a pretty long one. But I loved how original the story was. I feel like a lot of these can seem to blend together and this story stands out among the crowd.

For the dark romance girlies

When the Universe Sings by Gillian Eliza West

When the Universe Sings by Gillian Eliza West

This is the perfect mix for the dark romance girlies because the hero is a morally grey masked man.

It’s a space opera with dystopian vibes. Juniper lost her home planet and eleven years to a mechanical prison world. She gets out by joining a crew whose job is stealing a cosmic weapon for Captain Asher Ruciyah. His motives stay unreadable for most of the book and she’s running her own agenda the whole time. Think Reylo vibes mixed with Ocean’s 11. She’s a silks dancer and he is a yearner.

I couldn’t gobble this one up faster. It has great pacing and I loved the mix of space and dark romance while also having plenty of the political intrigue type conspiracy.

It’s spicy and it can go dark in places, so check the content warnings before you start. If masked men are your thing, I also have a whole list of masked men romance books across four genres.

Wild Silver and Lead by Lexie Axelson

Wild Silver and Lead by Lexie Axelson

This is the newest one on the list, a dark military romance and starts the Snake Ops series. If what you’re into is a bit more Walking Dead type of post apocalyptic, then this is your jam.

Ten years after the Raven virus turned the dead into monsters, Scottie is out searching for the family she lost in a raid when ex Delta Force captain Slade Reece puts a bullet through her chest. Instead of leaving her to die, he drags her back to his military base in the frozen North, where outsiders are forbidden and the penalty is execution. His way of keeping her alive is marriage: her body for his protection.

So you get zombies, a captor who becomes the only thing standing between her and everyone else, and a heroine who has to decide between the family she lost and the man who claimed her. It’s a high spice read, a little unhinged and a wild ride.

Vanguard by Karina Halle

Vanguard by Karina Halle

I really enjoyed this one and something quite different from Karina Halle. It’s a dystopian romance with a sci-fi, superhero style, set in 2040. Karina Halle calls it post-dystopian, the world after things already went wrong, so it’s closer to The Boys than The Handmaid’s Tale.

Both main characters are genetically engineered. Mia is a trained assassin for a black ops offshoot of MI6, and her saliva is literally poisonous, so no romance, no family and no intimacy of any kind. Vanguard is America’s first enhanced soldier, a Captain America type with an organization behind him, and Mia gets sent to infiltrate his inner circle and find out if he’s more weapon than savior. He also happens to be the only man she can kiss without killing.

It reads like a spy thriller with superheroes, with a little billionaire romance vibe too, because his real life gives Bruce Wayne. My favorite part was the slow realization that everything you’ve been told about somebody is wrong. If you like genre blending, it’s a really fun, unique ride.

Spicy dystopian romance with rebels

These are dystopias where somebody rebuilt the world and made the rules worse. The romance is part of breaking them.

Beyond Shame by Kit Rocha

Beyond Shame by Kit Rocha

We’ve been raving about the Beyond series at Under the Covers for a long time, and this is where it starts. There are tons of books in the series, each one spicier than the last, and I’d go in planning to binge the whole world.

It’s set in a post apocalyptic world ruled by a conservative, class based city where pleasure and choice are tightly controlled. Just outside the city walls is Sector Four, a rough and rowdy place living by its own rules. Noelle starts the book cast out of the city for moral crimes and ends up in the care of the O’Kanes, who run Sector Four. What follows is her sexual awakening and her figuring out who she is without all those restrictions.

Her romance with Jasper, a broody enforcer with a protective streak, is delicious. As the series goes on it leans into polyamory, open relationships, kink and found family, with a rebellion building in the background.

Claimed by Elle Kennedy

Claimed by Elle Kennedy

Of everything on this list, the Outlaw series is the one that feels most like Silver Elite by Dani Francis, but adult. It’s an erotic romance.

A devastating war wiped out most of civilization and the government that rose after it is completely authoritarian. The Enforcers control everything, including who gets access to resources, to sex and to freedom. Hudson escapes that life and her father, who happens to be a powerful Enforcer, and runs into the Outlaws, a group of rebels living off grid. Connor, their leader, is tough, dominant and suspicious of strangers, and he can’t ignore her determination or the chemistry between them.

Every book in the series is super steamy and it’s built around consent and breaking free of old restrictions, so the whole thing leans into sexual liberation in a world that tried to take it away.

Fire in His Blood by Ruby Dixon

Fire in His Blood by Ruby Dixon

Imagine dragons tearing through the sky and wrecking the world. That’s the Fireblood Dragons series, from the author you probably know for Ice Planet Barbarians.

Claudia is a survivor in a ruined city when she gets captured by one of the dragons, who happens to be able to turn into a very large, very possessive humanoid version of himself. Things escalate quickly from there. There’s barely any civilization left, humans are trying to make it day to day, and it’s steamy in that over the top Ruby Dixon way, with some emotion sneaking in anyway.

This is not for you if you’re shy about monster romance. If you were reading Silver Elite thinking this needed to be hotter and maybe have some claws, it is.

End of the world survival romance

And these are for when you want to live through the collapse: the virus, the blackout, the long walk home.

Wildflowers by Kylie Scott

Wildflowers by Kylie Scott

What if the end of the world came and your hot neighbor dragged you into his basement? That’s Wildflowers. Dean is the grumpy ex military neighbor and when a deadly virus starts collapsing society, the one person he wants to save is Astrid, the sunshine girl across the street. So he locks her in his basement. Checks out.

Astrid wakes up convinced he’s lost his mind. Then the news stops, fires break out and gunshots echo nearby, and what looked like paranoia might be the only thing keeping them alive.

It’s forced proximity survival romance with lots of emotional tension and a hero who is a little unhinged, but we like our heroes a little crazy and protective. It’s also the shortest read on this list.

Heart of the Sun by Mia Sheridan

Heart of the Sun by Mia Sheridan

This one is a second chance, childhood friends to lovers story thrown into end of the world chaos. Emily and Tuck were inseparable as kids until life pulled them apart. Thirteen years later she’s a global pop star, he’s fresh out of prison and trying to stay out of trouble, and she needs a bodyguard while he needs a job. You can already see where this is going.

Right as they’re working through that awkward, slow burn reconnection, a massive solar flare knocks out the entire power grid and society breaks down fast. Suddenly they’re two people trying to survive with no electricity, no structure and no safety.

It gives me Last of Us vibes, and it makes me think of the song If the World Was Ending, which sounds like such a romantic apocalypse.

Mercury Striking by Rebecca Zanetti

Mercury Striking by Rebecca Zanetti

The Scorpius Syndrome is pandemic meets military post apocalyptic romance. A bacterial infection wiped out most of the population and left the survivors changed: some turned violent and others turned genius level smart and very dangerous.

Lynne holds the key to a possible cure, and Jax is a former soldier turned ruthless leader of a survival faction in Los Angeles. Their chemistry is explosive from the start. Book one reads like a military thriller with spice, with tactical teams, gunfights, some zombie adjacent threats and a lot of morally grey decisions, and it still leans hard into two people who have seen too much and can’t trust easily.

Demon Ember by M.J. Haag and Becca Vincenza

Demon Ember by M.J. Haag and Becca Vincenza

Think of True Blood and The Walking Dead having a baby. That’s the Resurrection Chronicles.

A string of earthquakes unleashes a plague of zombie like infected creatures, the cities are destroyed, and nobody knows what’s going on. Mia is trying to make her way home through all of it when she meets one of the creatures and he isn’t like the others. Gray skin, yellow eyes, terrifying the first time she sees him, but he can speak, he can think and he seems oddly focused on keeping her alive.

Their bond builds slowly, layered with mistrust, fear and survival. It’s got action, humor and a good helping of weird, and if you like protective non human heroes, this one is going to hook you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some books like The Hunger Games with more romance?

To Cage a Wild Bird by Brooke Fast is the closest I’ve found: a prison where the rich pay to hunt the inmates, and a heroine falling for a guard she should hate. Poison Princess by Kresley Cole has a Hunger Games style fight to the death between characters who are tarot cards, Kingdom of Tomorrow by Gena Showalter sends a heroine in medical debt into a military force that hunts the infected, and Coldwire by Chloe Gong is the pick if you want the rebellion and conspiracy side.

Are there dark post apocalyptic romance books?

Yes. Wild Silver and Lead by Lexie Axelson is a dark military romance set ten years into a zombie virus, and When the Universe Sings by Gillian Eliza West has a morally grey masked captain. Vanguard by Karina Halle is a near future spy thriller with a heroine whose kiss is poisonous. All three are spicy, so check the content warnings first.

Which of these books are YA?

Poison Princess and Coldwire. Poison Princess starts as YA and gets darker and steamier by book three, and Coldwire only has a little romance. Everything else on this list is adult.

What’s the difference between post apocalyptic and dystopian romance?

Post apocalyptic romance happens during or after the collapse, so the story is about surviving it, like Wildflowers or Heart of the Sun. Dystopian romance happens after someone rebuilt society with worse rules, like the Beyond and Outlaw series, and the romance is part of breaking them.

Where to start

If you only pick one, make it To Cage a Wild Bird, because it’s the closest thing to that Hunger Games feeling. It’s also on my list of the best fantasy romance books I read in 2025, next to a few more dystopian picks. If the masked captain is what got you, my masked men romance books list has more of them, and if you’re curious about dark romance but not sure how dark you can go, try these three dark romance books for beginners first.

Tell me in the comments: who’s the fictional couple you’d want next to you at the end of the world?
