So how did a book make this list? Honestly, mostly on vibes. But for me, the best historical romance clinch covers need more than just a passionate embrace. They should capture the relationship stakes, the angst, and that irresistible push and pull between the characters. These are modern clinch covers so you will not get the drama of the oil painted classics. The vibe will be different, but the emotion is the same.

The Rogue of Fifth Avenue by Joanna Shupe

The Rogue of Fifth Avenue by Joanna Shupe

Joanna Shupe always has great covers and I think this one captures the feelings between the main couple and the vibe of the setting and plot so well. Plus also the more forward nature of the heroine. On top of that, I’m partial to blue so this one stood out to me immediately.

The Counterfeit Scoundrel by Lorraine Heath

The Counterfeit Scoundrel by Lorraine Heath

I’m not gonna lie, this cover grabbed my attention the first time I saw it and for some reason it immediately made me think back to the old school bodice rippers. But instead of the heroine being the one with the clothes hanging off her body, it’s the hero’s shirt. You can even see the more intense look in the heroine’s expression. I love the different power dynamic this cover shows us.

The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley

The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley

Is there really anything better than a historical romance clinch cover that looks like it’s mid ravishing? The Duke Heist gives us that but also there’s so much tenderness in it. And I think that represents the book so well. The play of light is beautiful, the gown taking centerstage. This is a great mix of softness and passion.

The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham

The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham

Whenever I think about a modern bodice ripper cover, I think about The Rakess. I remember when this cover was revealed and we all collectively (romance readers in the blogosphere) lost our mind. While this isn’t the beauty of the oil paintings of yesterday, everything about the composition is a perfect reference to the times. From the windswept hair and flowing dress to the impossible pose. Is she floating above him?

This Earl of Mine by Kate Bateman

I can’t help but look at this historical romance clinch cover and not be reminded of a good bodice ripper. Back in the day, the artist would pick a particular scene to paint and this is giving that vibe. We are being let in to a particular scene in the couples story. There’s passion, there’s longing, and maybe even the question of whether or not it’s a good idea. Plus it perfectly gives us the setting! And did I mention I’m partial to a blue dress?

For the Duke’s Eyes Only by Lenora Bell

We have blue and purple here, do you see a theme in this list? This cover shows a tender moment and if you ask me, the hero is so love with how he’s looking at her. I think he’s been waiting forever for this to happen. And yes, we have the hero again in a state of undress instead of the heroine. I love that.

The Duke's Deceitful Governess by Caroline Lee

The Duke’s Deceitful Governess by Caroline Lee

The playfulness of this cover just screams off the image. I love that while yes, we are in the middle of a passionate moment, it’s also a fun and playful moment. Even though we don’t see the facial expression of the hero, you kind of see that he’s also laughing. And talking about the aesthetic, the colors of the design overall are really happy. It all works together.

I wanted to include a medieval romance on this list because I do think that is an important time period representation for historical romance clinch covers. The tenderness of the romance that comes across on this cover while also telling us so much about the story. You get setting, heroine’s background, hero’s background, and a soft play of light.

And let’s close it out with another one that brings the classic clinch vibe. Lord Hold Takes a Bride with all the flowers, mid passionate moment, clothes coming off, and an unexplainable dress blowing in the wind. The only thing that would make this a stronger clinch would be some windswept hair. But I do like that she has her hair up.

Why Readers Still Love Historical Romance Clinch Covers

I think the clinch cover is a timeless piece of romance history and a staple of the genre. There is nothing that represents the books more than showing a couple in an intimate moment, and as you can see in the covers above, that doesn’t always mean ravishing. Tenderness is just as important as passion. While the clinch can be seen in all sub-genres of romance, I think historical romance clinch covers will forever be the most iconic because the style basically started there.
