What is a small town romance?
Lets start at the beginning. What are small town romance books? Small town romances are all about where a romance is set. If you have a romance set in small town or community, where everyone seems to know everyone else then it’s a small town romance. Traditionally these romances have a certain vibe, they’re cosy, sweet and heart warming, with authors likes Jill Shalvis and Robyn Carr. If you like your books seasoned with a bit more spice, you don’t have to look away from the small town genre. We have some steamy small town romance books in our recommendations as well.
But, there are consequences to reading small town romances. I can now never go to any small town in America. Why you ask? Well, the stereotype is that romance books give people – especially women – unrealistic expectations of romantic relationships. Now, I refute that completely. I love romance books, they don’t give people unrealistic expectations, they give them expectations that they should be treated with respects and be emotionally and physically fulfilled. Having said that I am convinced that small town America is choc full of gorgeous (and possibly bearded) men who are dying to give me orgasms and just need me to love them. If it’s not true, please don’t tell me.

Are small town romance books always contemporary romances?
Short answer? No. Although the majority of small town romances you find are contemporary, there is a small section that isn’t. Small town romances are romances set in small towns, and that happens across genres. What usually has people applying the small town romance trope to a book is less the population size and more the vibes. If a book is set somewhere with a cosy tight knit community then, voila! Small town romance. Does it matter if the residents are vampires and gargoyles? Not really, the small town romance still applies.
What authors write popular small town romance books?
There are some fantastic authors who love writing small town romance books and have been doing for a long time. This makes them perfect to pick up if you haven’t read any small town romance and don’t quite know where to start. These authors are all giants of the small town romance trope, with a lovely long backlist for you to explore. So much so, that you might be able to see some of their work come to live on Netflix!
