Not all books can be winners! And there are some books that I’ve struggled to finish. Some I made myself continue reading and finish only to realize I have no desire of continuing the series. Others I had to DNF. And there is the elusive one that even if I struggled to finish I ended up continuing the series and enjoying the rest. These are not all the books that fit in this category but I’m counting down five books I struggled with in today’s video.

The one book that comes to mind is the devil wears prada. I did eventually finish but it was the first book that made me realize I could have a book that fell in to the dnf category.
It’s liberating to put books in the DNF category! I have a hard time doing it and usually will keep reading a crappy book excerpt for few exceptions.
I’ve only read the Fever series. It actually took me a few books to get to the point I disliked Mac, but I always liked Barron. I’ve managed to get all, but the last book read. I’ve got The Bone Season and Red Rising on my TBR pile so I’m glad to know that they’re really slow starters. I do plan to read the Kim Harrison series eventually. I’ve experienced a few first book ‘meh’ experiences and went on to love the series. The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews is a good example of this. But, I’ve had more… Read more »
I struggled with the first Kate Daniels as well! As with The Edge series by Ilona Andrews. I think I stopped at book 2 of that one and never went back. It takes so much out of me to read them.
The one that comes to mind thats very popular is Moon Called (Mercy Thompson #1)
by Patricia Briggs. I gave it a 3 star, but there wasn’t enough interest in it for me to continue with the series.
I was that way about the Night Huntress series. I got through 2 of them and have never gone back. I know everyone adores Cat and Bones, but eh. I did really enjoy the Mercy Thompson series, but I’ve apparently moved on because I’m several books behind now.
You girls are breaking my heart! Mercy and Night Huntress!
I struggled with SHADOWFEVER. I had trouble with the cliffhanger from the previous book. I was unaccepting and had trouble getting through the set up for what was happening SF. I classify it as hibernating. I should make a shelf for that. Another that’s “hibernating” is WALK THROUGH FIRE by Kristen Ashely. Normally, I gobble up her stuff, but I just wasn’t in the mood for a second chance book and I just haven’t gotten back to it. I’ve managed to avoid spoilers for those, so I should just knuckle under and get back to them. As for actual DNFs?… Read more »
It’s so hard when you postpone reading a popular book for so long because spoilers at that point can bee so easy to stumble across.
I’m on the minority camp and always struggle with Kristen Ashley. Every single time I try.
Annie rices sleeping beauty trilogy, It took all had to finish the first book The claiming of sleeping beauty.I was crushed by how much abuse and degrading of beauty and other characters, not my thing! The other series I had a problem finishing was This isn’t over baby by k.Webster, great writing just not my thing the characters are really messed up and when the father started having a thing for his daughter I couldn’t wait to finish.
OMG Sleeping Beauty. I was traumatized when I read that. I was gifted the whole trilogy because of my “love of everything Anne Rice” and I couldn’t get through the first book. I tried so many times. I ended up getting rid of the paperbacks and then years later I thought maybe I should give it another shot. I got the audiobook of the first book and that was sheer torture. I forced myself to finish but I’ll never do that again. EVER. I know exactly what you mean.
I struggled with Red Rising and Bone Season, too. Right now I am struggling with Bollywood Affair.
Oh good to know! I’ve wanted to read that for such a long time!
Touch the Dark (Cassandra Palmer #1) by Karen Chance, was one I struggles with and don’t plan to read the rest of the series. Played by Jen Frederick was another recent one I struggled with and even though I really enjoyed the rest of the books in series this one did not work for me. I DNF’d Pointe of Breaking by Amy Daws and Sarah J Pepper but I’ve read and loved other books by Ms. Daws.
