Fifty Shades of Grey… We all know it.  We’ve all heard about it.  And yes, a lot of us have read it.  Some may like it and some may not.  But the definite truth is that this book has helped shape erotic romance as of late.  It’s definitely brought a lot of new readers to the genre and they are often left looking for good books to read after they’ve gobbled up Ms. James’s books.  Whether you liked it or not, here are some books that WE think are must reads in the erotic romance (and yes most of them BDSM and kinky) genre.  No fluttering inner goddesses here!

Pushing the Boundaries WhatCarolineWants_FINAL_lg-2
by Amanda Abbott
Book 1: WHAT CAROLINE WANTS

spacer

Amanda Abbot may be a newest author to the genre in this list but she certainly makes up for it in her hotter than hell Pushing the Boundaries series featuring married couples – can you believe it? What’s cool about this series is that it covers everything you can think of from mild BDSM to voyeurism. So if you’re easy to blush, make sure you’re reading this in private because things are sure to get hot with this one!

Masteredbound
by Lorelei James
Book 1: BOUND

spacer

The Mastered series explores the deeper meaning of some BDSM aspects.  We dive in a bit more into rope play and it’s beautiful to see the art behind just the sex.  The knowledge on the subject that Ms. James brings to the table shows through every page of this series.  Mixing in two art forms that come from Japan (shibari rope bondage and the whole culture behind martial arts) and setting the key players in this series as Japanese, there’s an element to BDSM that is missing from other books/series.  And we even get to explore that from a female Dom perspective later on in the series!

Masters of the Shadowlands Club Shadowlands-highres
by Cherise Sinclair
Book 1: CLUB SHADOWLANDS (Free)

spacer

Another one of my favourites Erotic Romance series, Cherise Sinclair and the Masters of the Shadowlands series holds a place in my heart. With a heroine for everyone, there’s a great diversity that is explored in these books. If you’re wondering just how many BDSM books a writer can do without getting old, Sinclair has a trick to keeping things fresh in each book. Exploring the more stranger but still very erotic corners of BDSM, she sheds light on areas that other authors aren’t often brave enough to explore in this series.

The-SubmissiveThe Submissive
by Tara Sue Me
Book 1: THE SUBMISSIVE

spacer

Tara Sue Me’s Submissive series is one of my favorite BDSM themed reads. It began with a trilogy: The Submissive, The Dominant, and The Training.  It has since expanded, and book four and five, The Enticement and The Collar were released in 2015.  Billionaire Dom Nathanial West is approached by Abigail King with with one thing in mind: she wants to be his next submissive.  Lovers of FSoG will find the setup familiar, but this trilogy actually came way before FSoG hit it big.   Nathanial has strict rules for his submissives and Abigail jumps in head first, knowing full well what she’s about to get in to.  She’s anything but meek and unsure of herself when it comes to what she’s discovered about her sexual needs.  The first three books lay the foundation for their relationship, with the following installments focusing on their growth as a couple in a long term relationship.  I love this series for so many reasons.  The characters are adults in every way and act the part.  Nathanial is my type of Dom:  decisive and strict, but attentive.  He doesn’t shy away from a little pain.  It’s not all slap and tickle.  In terms of plot development, they really take you on an emotional journey that’s character driven.  We get inside their heads and feel everything they’re feeling without the distraction of a lot of outside drama.  Tara Sue Me is such a smart writer who writes witty dialog and prose that flows so easily.  I can’t say it’s ever taken me more than two sittings to read one of her books.  The sex is absolutely scorchingly hot, and even five books in, I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of this couple and all of the ways they show the beauty of a D/s relationship that works in harmony.

Loving on the Edge Crash-Into-You
by Roni Loren
Book 1: CRASH INTO YOU

spacer

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again!  This is one of my, not only favorite erotic series, but favorite series period.  Roni Loren brings a refreshing voice to BDSM.  Every book delivers an adventure unlike the previous one.  You grow to care so much about this ever expanding group of characters, and to fall in love a bit with every one of them as well.  While this series does revolve somewhat around a kink club, it’s not so much the club but the friendships that bond the members that keep you coming back.  While you may say some of these heroes are billionaires, this is also not your typical billionaire story.  There’s actually a little bit of everything found in this club.  Successful business men, rock stars, aspiring rock stars who may have been living on the street, writers, even wine makers!

The Game Maker
by Kresley Cole
Book 1: THE PROFESSIONAL

spacer

Kresley Cole floored us all (at least here at UTC) when she introduced us to her Game Maker world.  The woman can write erotic romance like no other and to feature a rich bad boy to boost.  Her heroes are usually the type of man that will leave you panting and maybe swooning like a novice reader.  This is one that we often think back on and recommend because the intensity of what it will make you feel is unprecedented.  There hasn’t been anything quite like this to hit erotic romance in a while!  Mafia, bad boys, family intrigue and a penchant for some really hot spankings.  There’s no contracts and no formalities, just pleasure, plain and exploration.  Must Read!

The Original Sinners9780778313533_smp.indd
by Tiffany Reisz
Book 1: THE SIREN

spacer

One of my personal favourites in the Erotic Romance genre, Tiffany Reisz straightens out BDSM misconceptions in other books and displays them here in her own series without any fluff. This hardcore rendition of the lifestyle portrays all the aspects without any shame. If you’re looking for a riveting read, this one is for you. But I should warn you, it may not be for everyone.

NakedThe Blackstone Affair
by Raine Miller
Book 1: NAKED

spacer

Darker in tone with a little bit of scandal and suspense thrown in, The Blackstone Affair is the perfect follow up to 50 fans. The erotic tone definitely reminds me of Christian and Ana but Miller definitely puts her own spin on things with her characters. You’ll just have to read it to find out what it is!

Up in the AirIn-Flight
by R.K. Lilley
Book 1: IN FLIGHT

spacerspacer

Sophistication and sexiness meet in Lilley’s Up in the Air series. This book has the BDSM AND the billionaire tropes in it so it’s no wonder why this series is so highly recommended for 50 fans. But I will say that there seems to be more creativity in Lilley’s book in terms of the sex scenes. Does anyone remember the horseback riding scene? Yowza!

 gabriel's infernoGacircle1briel’s Inferno
by Sylvain Reynard
Book 1: GABRIEL’S INFERNO

spacer

When asked what to read after 50 Shades, this is the book that I recommend 99% of the time. With a hero like Gabriel and much better writing in my opinion, I think this series has the same elements of James’ series just without the BDSM. It’s easy to get lost in Reynard’s eloquent writing and with the sophisticated backdrop and emphasis on classic literature, Sylvain Reynard’s series is a must read for 50 fans.
