I love a funny book, if a book manages to make me laugh then it is pretty much guaranteed to get a good review from me; I’m sucker for it. You can’t swing a cat in Romancelandia without hitting a tank load of angst and heartbreak, it seems like authors are all vying to see who can make you cry the most. Writing a “darker” book also seems to be synonymous in people’s mind with it also being deeper or more meaningful in some way. Which, I have found to mostly be crap, it just seems like an author will cram a boatload of shitty events in one book and hope that one of them will trick you into crying. Getting someone to laugh though? So much harder.

Finding the humour in the ridiculousness of everyday life and then putting it on the page; I love that and it’s so much harder to find anyone who can do it without any skill or finesse. There are many books out there that market themselves as funny and I could do a whole new list named “books-that-thought-they-were-funny-but-were-actually-awful” but that’s a whole other issue. So, I decided to do a top ten list of books that made me laugh but then I narrowed it down further to books that are marketed as being funny, after all there have been plenty of series that have made me laugh every now and then. Now, brace yourself, and prepare to laugh as I show you the funniest books in town:

Wallbanger
Cocktail #1
by Alice Clayton

I picked this up with very low expectations, it had been recommended to me too many times and that never turns out well for me. But this time, this time it worked, I was smiling from the beginning. Clayton really delivers on the romance and the comedy and it remains my favourite book of hers.

Favourite Quote:

“He was wooing me. And I was letting him woo. I wanted the woo. I deserved the woo. I needed the wow that would surely follow the woo, but for now, the woo? It was whoa.”

Virgin
Virgin #1
by Radhika Sanghani

For my next gem, I dug I’m digging into a little New Adult/Chick lit, a genre I normally abhor, but Virgin is one of the exceptions. This book details the experiences of a 21 year old virgin and her quest to lose her V card, now it isn’t strictly romance and there is no HEA, but what it is is hilarious. It reminds you of all of those awkward experiences you had be it about sex, about men, about friends, about waxing and hygiene all through the lens of humour and I found myself not only laughing at the exploits of the heroine, but also of all the stupid stuff that I have thought/did along similar lines. It’s a fantastic book please give it a try.

Friend-Zoned
Friend-Zoned #1
by Belle Aurora

This was my first book by Belle Aurora, but I quickly fell in love with the quirky sense of humour and cast of characters she created in the Friend-Zoned series. It is full of banter and frienship as well as a great romance I finished this book with a smile on my face and pleased that I decided to take a chance on a new author.

Favourite Quote

“You’re pussy whipped.”
I claim, “I can’t be pussy whipped. I haven’t even had the pussy to be whipped!”
Take that, Ghost! Oh wait…
He chuckles, “That’s even worse, bro.”
Fuck me, it totally is.

Seduction and Snacks
Chocolate Lovers #1
by Tara Sivec

I picked up Seduction & Snacks on a whim and because I hoped that any books that mixed two of my favourite things, chocolate and reading, would be awesome. I was right, this book is awesome, hilarious and just on the right side of crude. In fact, I enjoyed the whole Chocolate Lovers series, if you haven’t read any Tara Sivec I highly recommend you try out this series. I also recommend you stop after this series as it becomes a little repetitive and on the wrong side of crude.

The Mane Event
Pride #1
by Shelly Laurenston

Shelly Laurenston is one of my favourite Paranormal Romance authors, her mixture of sexy heroes, unique heroines and laugh out loud humour never fails to consume me and her Pride series is one of my favourites. In The Mane Event, the first in the series you also get treated to a duo of books, both featuring some very sexy yet arrogant lion shifters and the women who end up having to put with them. Even if you don’t pick up this book, I highly recommend you try any Shelly Laurenston book.

Favourite Quote:

“So, hoss. Have you actually told her you’re in love with her?”
“She won’t let me. When I tried, she threw me down a flight of stairs.”
“And you’re not concerned about that?”
“There weren’t that many steps.”

Romancing the Duke
Castles Ever After #1
by Tessa Dare

Another one of my favourite things? Historical Romance. It’s one of my favourite genres, so when I find a book that makes me laugh in that genre, it’s like hitting the jackpot and I definitely hit the jackpot with Romancing the Duke. It has a grumpy and ill tempered hero, who just happens to be handsome and sin, yet with a great big gaping vulnerability – near blindness,  all of which happens to be my kryptonite so I already love this book. But with the addition of some very charming humour, a delightful romance, the Knights of Moranglia and a mischievous pet ermine I can’t understand why everyone hasn’t read it yet.

Favourite Quote

Astonishing. In the morning, when she sat working at that table of correspondence, silhouetted by sunlight . . .
Her hair truly did look like an octopus.
It was the way she wore it, he thought. Or maybe the way it wore her. It all sat perched atop her head in that big, inky blob. And no matter how strenuously she pinned it, dark, heavy curls worked loose on all sides, like tentacles. Of course, it was an entrancing, strangely erotic octopus. Ransom worried this might be how fetishes developed.

Playing for Keeps
Neighbour from Hell #1
by R.L.Mathewson

For this one, I am nominating the whole Neighbour from Hell series…it’s freaking hilarious. If you are a fan of Shelly Laurenston then you are going to like this series, it has a similar type of humour with the over the top arrogant alpha males and the hilarious women who ignore and enjoy tormenting them…in the most loving ways of course.

Favourite Quote

“He glared accusingly at her while he made short work of his clothes. “You didn’t wake me up.”
She rolled her eyes as she speared a piece of sausage with her fork. “I did wake you up. Three times in fact. Each time you threw something at me and went back to sleep.”
Jason gaped at her. “And you gave up? You know our routine, woman. You have to
keep at it until I’m forced to get off the bed to find something to throw at you.”

The Duke and I
Bridgerton #1
by Julia Quinn

I love Julia Quinn, all her books are fantastic, but the Bridgerton series is particularly special, it is a family based historical romance series that shows us the romance of each Bridgerton sibling. The series is light hearted and funny as well as touching and warm. Whenever you pick up a book you are enfolded into the loving embrace of the crazy, interfering but caring Bridgerton family.

Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake
Love by Numbers #1
by Sarah Maclean

I know, another historical romance but what can I say, I love them especially this one. What I love most about this book is the heroine, with her younger sisters engagement she comes to realise that her life is…bland, so she sets about to compose a list of activities she has always wanted to do like, drink in a pub and fence in a club and then she actually does them, with hilarious consequences. It’s so rare that a heroine stands out in a romance compared to a hero, but in this book it happens, which along with the humour makes it one of my all time favourites.

Neanderthal Seeks Human
Knitting in the City #1
by Penny Reid

And now we are on to number 1. I love Penny Reid and every book she has written, but this is the series and the book that started off my little obsession. Like it says on the covers, it’s a smart romance, my favourite, with plenty of humour and a quirky heroine and the series only gets better with each book as you get to know all of the characters in the small world that Reid has created. So, if you haven’t read this series I really urge you to pick it up, it will leave you with a warm heart and a smile on your face.

Although it’s a PNR I think FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT by Darynda Jones is one of the funniest books I’ve read.

I’m definitely saving this post to add books to my TBR pile. Some are already there, and I hadn’t realized that they’d be humorous. Normally I like darker stuff, but after the day I’ve had? Smiles and chuckles are most welcome. Thank you for including the quotes; they turned my frown upside down, and that’s no easy task!

Under the Covers Book Blog

I’m glad I made you smile 🙂 Sometimes you just need something to get a smile on your face and give you a laugh and these books are perfect for that. Let us know how you get along.

I am dying to get to the Shelly Laurenston books. I think I have the first few in Audible. I’ve added Playing for Keeps to my TBR because it sounds hilarious. I love laughs in the midst of my books. I read mostly PNR and with all the dark, you need to have the light.
