THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT
Welcome to Under the Covers Book Blog 2017 Paranormal Event! We love to do this in November; the nights have started to get darker, the wind a little colder and it becomes easier to imagine all those dark and mysterious creatures lingering in the shadows or basking in the moonlight. Of course, if you are a voracious reader of romance like me, the thought of mysterious creatures watching from the shadows becomes slightly less sinister…authors such as J.R. Ward, Gena Showalter, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Jeaniene Frost, Nalini Singh, Kresley Cole have embedded a dangerous thrill in such imaginations.
If you know that in the dark alleys it’s the Black Dagger Brotherhood fighting off their evil enemies, or that the crazy beautiful and just pure crazy ladies loitering around the bars causing trouble are on Team Veritus it becomes less scary and far more titillating. Even in my pre-romance reading days, I have always had a fascination with magic and the paranormal, from reading classic gothic authors such as Bram Stoker, Wilkie Collins and Mary Shelley to fantasy from JRR Tolkien, George RR Martin, David Eddings, Tad Williams and the like. Which, might explain why I have such a fascination and affection for all creatures that go bump in the night.
I especially love the more modern twists of creatures that people used to find terrifying. By giving them there own humanity they are less caricatures of evil, out to steal your baby and devour your soul; perhaps reflecting the troubles and worries of the time in which they were most prevalent. Now we have vampires, werewolves and everything in between shown as real beings with their own problems, with flaws and talents all of their own. So when I am reading my favourite UF or PNR, where the author has expertly created a world where the paranormal creatures are relatable in some ways and other in others I love it. It’s a little exciting, it’s a little dangerous and it makes you look at the shadows in a whole new way.
That whole new way? It’s kind of a sexy whole new way that gives loving creatures that go bump in the night a whole new meaning. How can I help it when this new(ish) generation of paranormal guys and gals are just so damn sexy? Vampires are “Tall, Dark and Handsome 2.0”, with an edge of broody and danger; shifters are “Sexy Outdoorsy Guy 2.0”, with their rugged looks, big bodies and animal magnetism. Now that these creatures have been given individual personalities and the best body an author can imagine it makes them irresistible, Contemporary Romance Men are going to have to up their game if they are going to compete with my favourite vampires and shifters.
This all means that I am glad we are using this week to celebrate all things that go bump in the night…and maybe find some more PNR/UF heroes and heroines to fall in love with!
Who are some of your favourite PNR and UF heroes and heroines?

What a great post on PNR love that you have shared here. And I agree that Nalini Singh and J.R. Ward are just fabulous authors. I think I have loved all the characters in the Psy Changeling series and can’t get enough of them. She definitely writes one of the best series in pack shifter dynamics.
I love Pia and Dragos and Morgan le Fae, all characters in Thea Harrison’s books.
AND I love C.L. Wilson’s heroes and heroines…. from both her Tairen Soul and her Weathermages series.
AND I can’t forget Amanda Bouchet’s characters in her Kingmaker chronicles.
AND Lisa Kessler’s characters and Katie Reus’… OMG… and so many more!!!!
I adore Aaron from Kelley Armstrong’s UF Underworld series. He’s not featured nearly enough, IMO. Elena from the same series is probably my favorite heroine so far in UF, because I’ve sadly found most “strong” women coming off more like “mean”. My favorite male in PNR is Wraith, a vampire/incubus in Larissa Ione’s Demonica Series. Of course I have about 30 ties for 2nd place in my favorites….
I love Charley and Reyes from Darynda Jones’ books, and Cat and Griffin from Kingmaker Chronicles.
Mercy and Adam from Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series, but also Charles and Anna. Dory and Louis-Cesare from Karen Chance’s Dorina Basarab series. Charley and Reyes from Darynda Jones’ Grim Reaper series. Both Nalini Singh series, JR Ward’s BDB (but I need to try her angels). Lara Adrian, Kresley Cole, Gena Showalter, Mary Calmes, Jeannine Frost…
Jericho Barrons, MacKayla Lane, Kit Colbana, Charley Davidson, Reyes Farrow, Rhage, Zsadist, Mary…
Oh so many…kate/curran, charley/reyes, mercy/ adam, cat/bones, raphael/elena, elena/clay, mackayla/jericho, aisling/drake, cat/griffin and so many others 🙂
I love so many!!! Jericho and Mac,wrath and beth, bones and cat,Aeron and Olivia,Reyes and Charley!! Etc etc!!!
