paris-daillencourt-is-about-to-crumble-alexis-hall

Paris Daillencourt is About to Crumble
by Alexis Hall

Series: Winner Bakes All #2
Release date: 01 November

set in a baking show | lgbtq+ romance | romantic comedy

It’s Great British Bake Off season, so there are two things on my mind at the moment: romance books and cakes. Alexis Hall has burrowed directly into my brain and delivered me both these things: a male/male romantic comedy set in the midst of a baking show. So, I’ve got my reading snacks ready – cupcakes and pastries – and I am dying to dive in!

Paris Daillencourt is a recipe for disaster. Despite his passion for baking, his cat, and his classics degree, constant self-doubt and second-guessing have left him a curdled, directionless mess. So when his roommate enters him in Bake Expectations, the nation’s favourite baking show, Paris is sure he’ll be the first one sent home.

But not only does he win week one’s challenge—he meets fellow contestant Tariq Hassan. Sure, he’s the competition, but he’s also cute and kind, with more confidence than Paris could ever hope to have. Still, neither his growing romance with Tariq nor his own impressive bakes can keep Paris’s fear of failure from spoiling his happiness. And when the show’s vicious fanbase confirms his worst anxieties, Paris’s confidence is torn apart quicker than tear-and-share bread.

But if Paris can find the strength to face his past, his future, and the chorus of hecklers that live in his brain, he’ll realize it’s the sweet things in life that he really deserves.

romantic comedy | reverse harem | forced proximity

I am a sucker for a reverse harem, but I haven’t read many (make that none…) contemporary romance ones. Most my reverse harem reads involve aliens. What attracts me to this one is how fun it sounds. It’s the perfect read to pepper between all the dark thrillers I am currently obsessed with.

Elise Brandeis has never won a Pulitzer—and she never will. At least not while she’s delivering sandwiches at the Gotham Times, instead of working there as an actual reporter. Her only shot at seeing her byline in print is to prove to the no nonsense managing editor that she has a nose for news. And she’s got just the story to grab her elusive attention.

Right after she delivers this turkey on ciabatta.

Chasing down leads brings Elise to Roosevelt Island, but just when the trail of clues begins to take shape, she gets stuck. Literally. On a cable car with three strangers who couldn’t be more different. An uptight rugby coach, a construction worker and a former adult film star she pretends not to recognize a little too well.

At first, Elise wants nothing more than to be rescued ASAP.

An hour later, everything has changed. By pure happenstance, four separate journeys have collided in an intense, meaningful way. Suddenly, disentangling their lives feels more impossible than winning that Pulitzer. Good thing Elise is too busy proving herself at work to consider three boyfriends. Nobody has time for that—even if they make giving in feel oh so right. But three heads are better than one and these loners will teach themselves to work together to win Elise over forever…

And more importantly, keep their dirty socks off her floor.

Ship Wrecked

Series: Spoiler Alert #3
Release date: 15 November

romanctic comedy | hollywood celebrities | second chance

I have really enjoyed the first two books in this series, especially All The Feels, which surprises me as I usually avoid anything where the characters are celebrities. But, Dade has a way of really bringing her characters to life. Plus she writes fat heroines, which is something I am a sucker for. Now the third book in the Spoiler Alert series is out and I can’t wait to get stuck in.

Maria’s one-night-stand—the thick-thighed, sexy Viking of a man she left without a word or a note—just reappeared. Apparently, Peter’s her surly Gods of the Gates co-star, and they’re about to spend the next six years filming on a desolate Irish island together. She still wants him…but he now wants nothing to do with her.

Peter knows this role could finally transform him from a forgettable character actor into a leading man. He also knows a failed relationship with Maria could poison the set, and he won’t sabotage his career for a woman who’s already walked away from him once. Given time, maybe they can be cooperative colleagues or friends—possibly even best friends—but not lovers again. No matter how much he aches for her.

For years, they don’t touch off-camera. But on their last night of filming, their mutual restraint finally shatters, and all their pent-up desire explodes into renewed passion. Too bad they still don’t have a future together, since Peter’s going back to Hollywood, while Maria’s returning to her native Sweden. She thinks she needs more than he can give her, but he’s determined to change her mind, and he’s spent the last six years waiting. Watching. Wanting.

His shipwrecked Swede doesn’t stand a chance.

Before I Let Go
by Kennedy Ryan

Series: Skyland #1
Release date: 15 November

marriage in trouble | second chance | emotional rollercoaster

I haven’t read many marriage-in-trouble books, but it’s always on my list of tropes I need to read more of. And what better way to start my journey than with Kennedy Ryan? You just know that this is going to be a an emotional, poignant and thoughtful exploration of the trope. I really can’t wait to get stuck in.

Two Wrongs Make a Right
by Chloe Liese

Series: Standalone
Release date: 22 November

opposites attract | fake dating | shakespeare retelling

Can I admit that it is the cover that first drew my eye? It’s got such a beautiful autumnal feel, and I love the heroine’s sleeve of tattoos. Usually it’s the guy that has the tats, so I love that switch. Then I read the blurb and realise it’s a retelling of Much Ado About Nothing … it’s the perfect read to snuggle down with this season.

Jamie Westenberg and Bea Wilmot have nothing in common except a meet-disaster and the mutual understanding that they couldn’t be more wrong for each other. But when the people closest to them play Cupid and trick them into going on a date, Jamie and Bea realize they have something else in common after all—an undeniable need for revenge.

Soon their plan is in place: Fake date obnoxiously and convince the meddlers they’re madly in love. Then, break up spectacularly and dash everyone’s hopes, putting an end to the matchmaking madness once and for all.

To convince everyone that they’ve fallen for each other, Jamie and Bea will have to nail the performance of their lives. But as their final act nears and playing lovers becomes easier than not, they begin to wonder: What if Cupid’s arrow wasn’t so off the mark? And what if two wrongs do make a right?

Fantasy and Urban Fantasy New Releases

raven-unveiled-grace-draven

Raven Unveiled
by Grace Draven

Series: Fallen Empire #3
Release date: 08 November

villian hero | enemies to lovers | ghost whisperer

I have loved the first two books in this series and I cannot wait to read this one. It is probably my most anticipated book of November. Especially as we get Ghastek’s story. We got a glimpse of his point of view in the previous book and it just left me wanting more. Plus, look at that cover. The artwork is so beautiful!

Siora has been on the run for longer than she cares to remember, from her past and her gift. Born with the ability to see and speak to ghosts, she has heard their desperate pleas as an otherworldly predator stalks the dead amid the fertile killing fields of the collapsing Krael Empire. The creature’s power and reach are growing with every soul it consumes, but Siora is preoccupied with her own troubles: namely an assassin who has sworn an oath of vengeance against her.

Gharek of Cabast was once the right-hand man of the reviled empress but is now a wanted fugitive. Although his reasons for hunting Siora are viscerally personal, what Gharek can’t anticipate is that when he finally does find her, she will hold the key to saving his world, or what’s left of it. To make good on old debts and protect the vulnerable dead from a malevolent force, Gharek and Siora will both need to make an ally out of an enemy—and trust that will be enough to save each other.

the-serpent-in-heaven-charlaine-harris

The Serpent in Heaven
by Charlaine Harris

Series: Gunnie Rose #4
Release date: 15 November

alternate history | urban fantasy | magic

We all know Charlaine Harris for her Sookie Stakehouse series and it’s TV adaption True Blood. But, in the Gunnie Rose series we have an urban fantasy series where the world is familiar…but not quite as we know it. Our heroine is a gunslinger (Old West style!) in a world of magic, and I love this blend of fantasy and western. If you want to try something a little different, this may be the one for you.

Felicia, Lizbeth Rose’s half-sister and a student at the Grigori Rasputin school in San Diego—capital of the Holy Russian Empire—is caught between her own secrets and powerful family struggles. As a granddaughter of Rasputin, she provides an essential service to the hemophiliac Tsar Alexei, providing him the blood transfusions that keep him alive.

Felicia is treated like a nonentity at the bedside of the tsar, and at the school she’s seen as a charity case with no magical ability. But when Felicia is snatched outside the school, the facts of her heritage begin to surface. Felicia turns out to be far more than the Russian-Mexican Lizbeth rescued. As Felicia’s history unravels and her true abilities become known, she becomes under attack from all directions. Only her courage will keep her alive.

She will do anything to end Kolis, the false King of Gods, and his tyrannical rule of Iliseeum, thus stopping the threat he poses to the mortal realm.

Nyktos has a plan, though, and as they work together, the last thing they need is the undeniable, scorching passion that continues to ignite between them. But memories of their shared pleasure and unrivaled desire are a siren’s call impossible to resist.

Never Rescue A Rogue
by Virginia Heath

Series: The Merriwell Sisters #2
Release date: 08 November

enemies to lovers | witty | regency romance

Enemies to lovers is one of our favourite tropes, especially when it’s paired with whip smart banter and some sizzling and reluctant attraction. Which, is precisely what Virginia Heath is promising us in Never Rescue a Rogue. Well, sign me!

Diana Merriwell and Giles Sinclair only tolerate one another for the sake of their nearest and dearest. Everyone believes that the two of them are meant to be together, but Diana and Giles know that their constant pithy barbs come from a shared disdain—not a hidden attraction. Diana loves the freedom of working at the newspaper too much to give it up for marriage, and Giles is happily married to his bachelor lifestyle. But they do have one thing in common—the secrets they can’t risk escaping.

When Giles’ father, the curmudgeonly Duke of Harpenden unexpectedly turns up his toes, it’s only a matter of time before someone comes crawling out of the woodwork who knows the true circumstances of his only son’s birth. As the threat of blackmail becomes real, Giles must uncover the truth of his parentage first, or else he and all those who depend upon him will be ruined—and dogged bloodhound Diana is his best hope at sniffing out the truth. The Sea Siren of Broadwater Bottom
by Courtney McCaskill

Series: The Astley Chronicles #3
Release date: 18 November

love amisdt a competition | mutual pinning | heroine with secret identity

This is another book where the cover immediately caught my attention, it’s just so pretty! And, I am glad it captured my interest as I love the sound of this. Both characters attracted to one another without the other knowing….a competition with big stakes for both of them getting in the way…a smart heroine…it has all the ingredients of a fantastic historical romance read.

Two scholars. One contest. Only one can be the winner …

Edward Astley, Viscount Fauconbridge, has to win the classical translation contest being held at Oxford in two weeks. Literally, he has to, because his little brother, Harrington, got drunk and bet fifteen thousand pounds that he would, and their father will cut Harrington off if he finds out about his imprudent wager. Edward would never let his brother down, but he cannot possibly win this stupid contest. Not only will he be competing against fifty other scholars, but one of them is the latest star on the literary scene, the anonymous translator whose rendition of On the Sublime is taking Britain by storm. Meanwhile Edward hasn’t opened a Greek lexicon in years, because he secretly hates classical poetry following his gruelling years at Cambridge.

Now he’s supposed to be studying, but all he can seem to think about is Elissa St. Cyr, the redheaded daughter of his former tutor, who’s every bit as brainy as she is delectable.

However…

Elissa St. Cyr has problems of her own. She has to win that classical poetry contest, too. It’s her only chance to earn an academic credential so she’ll be taken seriously as a scholar. And with her father’s health failing, Elissa, her mother, and her three sisters will be left destitute unless Elissa can support them through her translation work.

To make matters worse, she managed to get stuck in the middle of a pond during a thunderstorm, and the person who happened along to rescue her, witnessing her in the most humiliating moment of her remarkably humiliating life, was her ultimate beau idéal, the brilliant Edward Astley. Now Elissa keeps bumping into Edward everywhere she goes. Which would normally be wonderful …

… except she’s worried he’s going to figure out that she is the anonymous translator everyone is talking about.

You Can Hide
by Rebecca Zanetti

Series: Lauren Snow #2
Release date: 29 November

fbi profiler heroine

I haven’t read Rebecca Zanetti (yet) but I think this is the series I am going to pop that particular cherry with. I love a thriller series with a profiler as the main character. It adds that extra psychological twist that makes everything more interesting to me.

What do you do when a sociopath loves you? Rising star FBI profiler Laurel Snow is about to find out …

Calling Laurel Snow’s relationship with her newly discovered half-sister challenging is an understatement. Not only does Laurel suspect Abigail is behind the mysterious disappearance of their father, but her erratic behavior also makes life in Laurel’s small hometown interesting, to say the least. Still, when Abigail claims someone is now out to kill her, Laurel’s instinct to protect her sister goes into overdrive. Then things get even more dicey as dead bodies start turning up in the icy waters of the Sauk River and there’s only one connection among them: Abigail . . .

Having Fish and Wildlife Captain Huck Rivers bringing in those bodies with his dive team only complicates matters. Huck is as impulsive and fiery as Laurel is coolly analytical, which makes their alliance risky at best. But standing up to such a demonically brilliant killer is going to take all the help Laurel can get. Because Laurel’s attempt to save her troubled sister’s life might cost her own . .

Jasmine Zumideh Needs A Wind
by Susan Azim Boyer

Series: Standalone
Release date: 01 November

Set in the 70s | navigating your identity and heritage

Every high school student struggles with who they are and where they fit in. But for our heroine Jasmine this is brought into sharp focus when current events lead the country to some anti Iranian sentiments. Although this book is set in the 70’s, it’s not hard to draw parallel’s to today, this sounds like an excellent novel about navigating your identity, your family and high school.

A fresh spin on the cult-classic Election meets Darius the Great Is Not Okay in Jasmine Zumideh Needs a Win when an international incident crashes into a high school election, and Jasmine is caught between doing the right thing and chasing her dream.

It’s 1979, and Jasmine Zumideh is ready to get the heck out of her stale, Southern California suburb and into her dream school, NYU, where she’ll major in journalism and cover New York City’s exploding music scene.

There’s just one teeny problem: Due to a deadline snafu, she maaaaaaybe said she was Senior Class President-Elect on her application—before the election takes place. But honestly, she’s running against Gerald Thomas, a rigid rule-follower whose platform includes reinstating a dress code—there’s no way she can lose. And she better not, or she’ll never get into NYU.

Then it all goes wrong(er)

But then, a real-life international incident turns the election upside down. Iran suddenly dominates the nightly news, and her opponent seizes the opportunity to stir up anti-Iranian hysteria at school and turn the electorate against her. Her brother, Ali, is no help. He’s become an outspoken advocate for Iran just as she’s trying to downplay her heritage.

Now, as the white lie she told snowballs into an avalanche, Jasmine is stuck between claiming her heritage or hiding it, standing by her outspoken brother or turning her back on him, winning the election or abandoning her dreams for good.

Told with biting insight and fierce humor, Susan Azim Boyer’s Jasmine Zumideh Needs a Win is a fresh, unforgettable story of one Iranian-American young woman’s experience navigating her identity, friendship, family, her future, and a budding romance, all set against life-changing historical events with present-day relevance.

Holding Up The Sky
by Rebecca Alasdair

Series: Standalone
Release date: 02 November

queer hero | mental health | Debut novel

This debut novel sounds like a beautiful and emotional read. Our hero Carter is struggling with the pressures of school, home and grief. His life feels like it’s unravelling. No matter what your age, this book has something you can identify with; we are all familiar with having too much to deal with. This sounds like a really promising debut novel and I can’t wait to get stuck in.

Everyone knows Carter Cantwell: brainiac, music nerd, school captain. Total overachiever. What no one knows about him: all of it is a sham. The real Carter is an anxious mess still drowning in grief after tragedy ripped his family apart. He’s just gotten good at pretending.

Then he meets Remy. Brazen, charming, and everything he’s not, Remy blazes into Carter’s orderly world and turns his defences to ash. But as Carter juggles new responsibilities at school, old troubles at home, and this boy he can’t seem to stay away from, he starts cracking under the pressure.

With his secrets leaking out and all that he’s worked for falling apart in his hands, Carter faces the hardest choice of his life: succumb to his demons, or fight for the future he never knew he wanted.

But when you’re lost in the dark, how do you find your way back?

The Q
by Amy Tintera

Series: Standalone
Release date: 08 November

post apocalyptic | action | survival

How about a post apocalyptic action thriller? Survival in a post pandemic world? If you want something with some pulse pounding action then this sounds like the read for you. I love survival stories. Especially when it pushes two unlikely characters together, who then have to rely on each other to survive. When I inevitably get in the mood for something more fast paced, this is where I will be looking.

Seventeen-year-old Maisie Rojas has spent her entire life in the Q—a post-pandemic quarantine zone that was once Austin, Texas. Born and raised behind the high security walls that sealed their fate, she’s now a trusted lieutenant for one of the territory’s controlling families.

Lennon Pierce, the charismatic son of a US presidential candidate, has just been kidnapped by his father’s enemies and dropped out of a plane into the Q with nothing but a parachute strapped to his back. Lennon is given a temporary antidote to the disease and crucial intel for his father, but Maisie must get him out of the zone within forty-eight hours–or he will be permanently infected and forced to remain.

With unrest brewing both inside and outside the Q, reaching the exit is a daunting and dangerous task. But if Maisie and Lennon fail, it could mean disaster for the entire quarantine zone and its inhabitants—and could cost Lennon his life.

Strap in for breakneck action and compelling characters in this timely, nonstop thriller.

This is the concluding book in the Gilded Duology by Marissa Meyer. Perfect if you enjoy a fairy tale inspired/retlling. I especially like this one, as instead of the usual Beauty and the Beast/Cinderella *insert other Disney fairy tales here* this is inspired by Rumpelstiltskin.

Following a shocking turn of events, Serilda finds herself ensnared in a deadly game of make-believe with the Erlking, who is determined to propel her deeper into the castle’s lies. Meanwhile, Serilda is determined to work with Gild to help him solve the mystery of his forgotten name and past.

But soon it becomes clear that the Erlking doesn’t only want to use Serilda to bring back his one true love. He also seeks vengeance against the seven gods who have long trapped the Dark Ones behind the veil. If the Erlking succeeds, it could change the mortal realm forever.

Series: The Legendborn Cycle #2
Release date: 08 November

king arthur reimagining | action | demons

The sequel to the wildly successful Legendborn in 2020, Bloodmarked continues our heroine’s journey. I’ve had the first book on my TBR for a while, knowing the next one will (hopefully) finally prompt me into actually reading it! I love the idea of secret societies, especially when it’s based on Arthurian legend. Bring it on!

The shadows have risen, and the line is law.

All Bree wanted was to uncover the truth behind her mother’s death. So she infiltrated the Legendborn Order, a secret society descended from King Arthur’s knights—only to discover her own ancestral power. Now, Bree has become someone new:

A Medium. A Bloodcrafter. A Scion.

But the ancient war between demons and the Order is rising to a deadly peak. And Nick, the Legendborn boy Bree fell in love with, has been kidnapped.

Bree wants to fight, but the Regents who rule the Order won’t let her. To them, she is an unknown girl with unheard-of power, and as the living anchor for the spell that preserves the Legendborn cycle, she must be protected.

When the Regents reveal they will do whatever it takes to hide the war, Bree and her friends must go on the run to rescue Nick themselves. But enemies are everywhere, Bree’s powers are unpredictable and dangerous, and she can’t escape her growing attraction to Selwyn, the mage sworn to protect Nick until death.

If Bree has any hope of saving herself and the people she loves, she must learn to control her powers from the ancestors who wielded them first—without losing herself in the process.
