FACE/OFF

It seems like an impossible choice right? Do you pick cowboys, or do you pick vampires? We all have a soft spot in our hearts and warm spot on our beds for both. Cowboys, with their eternal stetson, looking beautifully masculine and delightfully sweaty as they toil (shirtless) under the sun. Then their are vampires with their seductive kisses and a dark edge that never fails to mesmerise. Truely, how is a girl to choose?

Of course, you could always try and have a little of both and make no choice at all. If I can find an alien hero with tentacles instead of legs, then in the vast array of romance novels on the market there has got to be that magical combination of vampire and cowboy some where. And, indeed there is. The Shadow Wranglers series by Sarah McCarty. I haven’t read this (yet) although I have read a lot of other Sarah McCarty books and enjoyed them. But, what could possibly go wrong with two of my favourite hero types being smooshed together?

However, not all my favourite vampires are cowboys, although there is always role play right? Is it wrong to imagine Wrath from the Black Dagger Brotherhood or Bones from the Night Huntress series in a stetson and chaps…and nothing else? And my favourite cowboys aren’t going to suddenly become immortal, angsty and lust for my blood. So, a choice must be made, cowboys or vampires?

Firstly, I need to describe the kind of vampire I’m talking about, I don’t want any moody, sparkly, creepy Edward Cullen types. I had enough of teenage boys when I was a teenager, instead I want some leather wearing, butt kicking, wise cracking, fierce and skilled type of vampires. If a vampire doesn’t have some combination of those things then they aren’t eligible for the Suzanne Boyfriend Basement.  Luckily, plenty of authors are very obliging and I have a whole harem of vampire men that are great contenders in this contest. I’ve already mentioned two of them, Bones from Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series, he ticks the wise ass, fierce and butt kicking parts. In fact, all vampires that Frost writes are in my harem, but I absolutely cannot wait to read Shades of Wicked the first in her Night Rebel series where we FINALLY get Ian’s, that devilish scamp, story. Then there’s Wrath. The Blind King in J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Leather wearing, ass kicking, fierce and smoking hot. Need I say more? Finally, if the vampires aren’t already winning you over, how about a space vampire? Ilona Andrews Innkeeper Chronicles features the always charming, handsome yet deadly Arland Marshal of the House Krahr. He first pops up in Clean Sweep, but his story is more intimately part of Sweep of the Blade which is currently being told for free on Ilona Andrews’ website.

But how about them cowboys? Vampires are all great but, they can’t exactly take you on a sunlit picnic or kiss you with risk of some serious lacerations and the whole undead thing…a little creepy. Cowboys don’t have that problem. Their bronzed and beautiful bodies can take you on that picnic and then kiss you senseless afterwards without an ambulance needing to be called. And, I can’t mention cowboys without mentioning Lorelei James, the author who opened my eyes to the sexiness of a man with some rope and cowboy boots. Her Rough Riders series gives you a smorgasbord of sexy cowboy heroes. One of my favourite’s is Kade “who-says-nice-guys-finish-last” McKay who managed to be the perfect man. Then, if you like your guys with more of an edge you can always test drive Colt McKay, who is known for being a very bad boy. If you want to go back in time a little to the Old West, Sarah McCarty’s Hell’s Eight boys will take you on a wild ride, but it’s well worth it. These boys are all wicked dangerous, kinky as hell and just waiting for the right woman to come along an tame them.

After much consideration, I’ve decided it’s an impossible choice…but if I had to make it. Vampires. There lords of the night are in some of my favourite ever series. They can be the hero or the villain and the vampire legend has so much scope that authors can and have utilised them in lots of interesting ways. And as a romance hero or heroine they are just damn right sexy. Sorry cowboys!

Who would you pick? Vampires of Cowboys?

It’s tough! Seriously tough because I really do love both. However, when I actually did the hard data checking, I’ve read and enjoyed more cowboy books lately so I’ll do my vote based on that. 🙂
