It’s coming to the end of year and it’s a brilliant time to reflect on our favourite reads of 2017. Unfortunately there isn’t enough room to list all the books we have liked and would recommend. So, we are each doing a post with the cream of the crop, the books that have stayed on our mind all year and that we’re dying to share with you.

Annnnnd with no further ado *cues drum roll* here are my favourite books of 2017…

Picking the Best of 2017 was really a hard task given my reading time has been cut down to half this year.  Unfortunately, I’ve taken on more responsibilities that prevent me to sit and enjoy my books.  But after going through my read books list this year, it wasn’t hard to figure out which is my absolute best read book.  That’s no other than Darynda Jones’ The Trouble with Twelfth Grave.  This book is the twelfth book of the series and it just pulled all kinds of emotions out me.  I love where Darynda has brought this series and couldn’t recommend this Urban Fantasy series enough.

My Review

This year, I explored more outside my comfort zone in my reading choices. By that I mean, I took recommendations that are not just in the romance genre.  I mostly dabbed on fantasy and YA which some had romance but very light.  Two of the books, I really enjoyed is Kerri Maniscalco’s Stalking Jack the Ripper and Hunting Prince Dracula.  It’s all mystery and suspense that I could not put these books down.  I read it one after the next wanting more.  Oddly enough, historical fiction is not my first choice of genre yet, rated these books four and five stars.  One of my best reads for the year.

Francesca’s Review

Sherrilyn Kenyon took this one. Deadmen Walking is technically a spin of Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series but it’s a different time and place.  As a start of the Nevermore series, it is one of the Best New Series of my year.  I’m actually surprised that I love the storyline since I’m not too fond of pirates.  I suppose Kenyon did an amazing job with the plot that I didn’t mind the pirate story.  Don’t get me wrong, I loved watching Pirates of the Caribbean movies which by the way has the same vibe as this book,  but for some odd reason, I just can’t handle reading about them.  I guess not in this case, but hey….time’s a changing, mates.
I also just finished Kenyon’s Insurrection, book one of the Nevermore series.  This is such a short book that it felt more like a prequel to the series.  I loved it. I mean, I don’t like that it was short, but I loved the book just the same. I really don’t know what Kenyon’s plans are for this series, but it has a feel of a Young Adult Fantasy to it. It’s Post-Apocalyptic world with aliens and surviving humans.  I love the world building and I love all the characters despite we only got a few chapters.  It’s definitely one to watch for.

My Review

Typically, for favorite heroines, I tend to go with heroines from a fantasy world versus realistic world.  How can I not. Heroines from a fantasy world are usually strong-willed, kick ass, and sometimes with powers.  Not to mention they probably end up with a worthy hero.  This year’s favorite heroine is Lada from Now I Rise.  This girl takes after her father who is ruthless, kickass and knows exactly what she wants.  Her dreams come first and foremost and nothing will stand in her way.  I love reading her story, it’s also one of the best YA/fantasy that I’ve read this year.

My Review

[new-release title=”Now I Rise” author=”Kiersten White”]

This one was a little hard for me to choose just one.  It was a battle between Reyes from Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson series and Vlad Tepesh of Jeaniene Frost’s Night Prince series.  These men are powerful in their own right, sexy, and very alpha.  What I love most is how they worship the love of their lives unconditionally.  They would go to hell and back just to protect them.  This two authors did such a magnificent jobs making them unforgettable.

Series Reviews

[new-release title=”Into the Fire” author=”Jeaniene Frost”]

It was a choice between three books but I seem to keep going back to Cora Carmack’s Roar, the first instalment of the Stormheart series.  There’s just something poetic about the girl on the cover; her flowing dress and her weapons at the ready.  Makes me wonder what’s going through her mind.  There’s also a different texture on the dress and shines when in the right angle of the light.  This cover would make me buy this from the store just by its cover.  It’s so very pretty.

My Review

[new-release title=”Roar” author=”Cora Carmack”]

J.R. Ward has been a favorite of mine since I started my adventure in reading for romance novels.  And I think I can speak for the rest of the girls here at UTC, along with many of our readers.  Unfortunately, the 15th book was a big let down for me; even bigger than Phury’s book which I sorta didn’t like (a whole other issue).  One of the things I love about Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood is the heroes for their alpha traits, fierce, build, undying love and respect for their mates but the characters did not have the same personas as they usually do in The Chosen.  It almost seems like it was a whole other author who wrote this book. Nothing was consistent.  I can go on with my opinions and complaints about this book but it’s best explained here in our group review.  With all that said, I was disappointed.  I have every confident Ward will get her mojo back and she will undoubtedly make me fall in love with her books again.

Group Review

[new-release title=”The Chosen” author=”J.R.Ward”]

This one surprised me a little. I was looking through the books I’ve read, and Marina’s Adair’s It Started with a Kiss just keeps popping into my mind.  The couple in this book, are not magical beings nor are they billionaires.  They are not kick ass in a literal sense of fighting or have any magical powers.  They are ordinary people from a realistic world living realistic lives.  In fact, their lives have never been perfect but what makes them the perfect couple is that these two learned to accept and live life to the fullest.  They love with all their heart despite the uncertainties of the future.  They know life is short especially if illness, sickness, but despite their trials and tribulations they love and live.

My Review

[new-release title=”It Started with a Kiss” author=” Marina Adair”]

So, this will be a little hard to explain because of possible spoilers.  But I will try to explain the best I can.  I am picking Darynda Jones’ Trouble with Twelfth Grave. Let me start by saying the hero of this series, Reyes Farrough’s character is to die for. This guy exude power in all levels.  He is sexy to the bone, and he loves with all his heart and did I mention dude is sexy down to his bone.  With that said, Reyes truly comes out of his shell in so many ways in this book and one of those ways is making love with Charley for the very first time in “this” fashion.  Without giving any spoilers, Reyes and Charley have been together before but this is the first time that they are together with everything he is…heart and soul.

My Review

[new-release title=”Trouble with Twelfth Grave” author=”Darynda Jones”]

I’ve looked through all the books I’ve read this year and there’s really no other choice but to pick Darynda Jones. She along with just a hand of authors that I’ve read had stayed consistent with their writing. Darynda has managed to sweep me off my feet with every book she has written. I love her writing, along with the humor, love and adventure she bring to her Charley Davidson series. The series is now at twelveth installment, and she keeps the spark in every book. Darynda is simply amazing.
