In A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows, Velasin vin Aaro is a young lord living in a society where homosexuality is viewed as sinful, which forces him to hide his preferences from his family and society at large. However, when he is unexpectedly outed Vel finds himself in an predicament: he is offered an arranged marriage with a lord from a neighboring country. The road to his wedding proves to be a bumpy one, both physically and emotionally. Will Vel find happiness with his betrothed, Cae, or will outside forces make their marriage a short one?
My favorite books are always the ones with great world building and Foz Meadows does a great job in this regard. I loved how no detail proved too small for the author, with readers learning not only about the long-standing conflict between the countries of Ralia and Tithena, but also about the marriage customs, funeral rites, modes of address etc of this world. And all of this is presented to the reader so organically via the exchanges between Vel and Cae as the two would be spouses learn about one another!
In terms of the plot, I thought this was a powerful story of healing, finding love and acceptance as well as learning to love and accept yourself. Part romance, part mystery this is a book you are both ready to devour and don’t want to end. I loved how the story ended, but also felt that it left room for more of Vel and Cae’s story in the future should the author decide to go back to it. Personally, I wouldn’t be opposed!
And finally, while on the topic of romance, Cae and Vel made the cutest couple! Vel went through a lot in this story, early on becoming a victim of sexual assault, so it is unsurprising that he was hesitant to trust Cae at first. I loved how patient and understanding Cae was with Vel. It was just so cute watching the two of them realize their budding feelings for one another. This story has a lot of serious moments, but the interactions between Vel and Cae often left me feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
Overall, A Strange and Stubborn Endurance made for a fantastic read and I will be on the lookout for more books by Foz Meadows in the future.
