synopsis

Set in a dark fantasy world where vampires are very real and very dangerous, Silver Under Nightfall is the story of Remy Pendergast. Born into a noble family, but ostracized from society due to a series scandals, Remy has made hunting vampires and keeping humanity safe his lifelong mission. When a mysterious plague threatens both humans and vampires, Remy finds himself teaming up with vampire couple, Zidan and Xiaodan, in order to try to discover its origins. As with any good story, things are never what they seem and try as he may, Remy finds it harder and harder to deny his growing attraction towards the vibrant Xiodan and the taciturn Zidan. But can romance blossom when war is just around the corner?

review

The best way to describe Rin Chupeco’s Silver Under Nightfall is a combination of well-developed characters and a plot that will have you hooked until the very end. As is usually the case for me, my favorite character in this book was sidekick Elke, Remy’s trusted vampire confidante. As a character, Elke was a fun combination of pragmatic and optimistic. This combination made for some rather hilarious moments in what was more often than not a rather dark story.

At the same time this was very much Remy’s story. Rin Chupeco puts him through a lot in this book. He is forced not only to fight numerous blood thirsty vampires, but also his own inner demons as a result of the trauma and abuse he received from both his father and society at large. By the end of this book Remy’s journey is still very much a work in progress and it seems likely that he will have lots of choices to make in the next book as he tries to find a place for himself in this world.

I think that fans of polyamorous romance will love this book as the pairing of Remy/Xiaodan/Zidan was fantastic. I loved how much of a partnership the three of them were able to form both romantically and when it came to tackling the mysterious illness plaguing their world. Theirs was definitely a slow burn romance with lots of tensions and I loved every second of it. My one complaint about this book was that the pacing did not always work for me with some scenes feeling unnecessary to the plot at large. But overall, this did not significantly diminish my enjoyment of the book.

in conclusion

It’s been a while since I’ve read a truly noteworthy vampire story and I can honestly say that Rin Chupeco exceeded my wildest expectations with her novel, Silver Under Nightfall. With spooky season just around the corner, I think this is the perfect read to add to your TBR.
