“The author did a great job wrapping up our main characters and their second chance romance in this spy mystery storyline with perfect balance.”~ Under the Covers
I’m always excited to read a book by Anna Harrington and for this book in particular, I was looking forward to see the development of the Spectre and Lords of the Armory. The concept of this series of a group of ex-military men coming together to investigate a group trying to thwart the government is exciting. I haven’t read a ton of spy historical romances but every time I pick one up that remotely has this plot, I usually enjoy it.
In this book, the mystery was a nice addition to the romance and probably the part of this story that I enjoyed the most. Maybe it’s my mystery/thriller loving self. The author did a great job wrapping up our main characters and their second chance romance in this spy mystery storyline with perfect balance.
But then there’s the characters. They were fine. Nothing wrong with either of them and I love a good second chance, childhood sweethearts romance. I was rooting for them at the start because of the premise and the fact that it’s my catnip. Somewhere along the way they lost me. I just didn’t feel invested in either of them or their romance all that much.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes and meh. I still think that Anna Harrington does such a good job at writing historical romance and I’m intrigued by this series that I’ll continue. But maybe it won’t be with as much enthusiasm as I used to have for her books.
