” I felt like the characters were as cartoonish and flat as their counterparts on the cover.”
~ Under the Covers
Full disclosure: I DNFed this book, I got to 30% and I made the decision not to continue reading. Why you ask? Was it because I hated it? Nope, I didn’t hate it but I could tell that this book wasn’t going to get more than 2 stars from me, and life is too short and my TBR is too long to continue to read a book which I will only give 2 stars.
A lot of people have enjoyed this book, and I can see why, it’s funny, and as bold, bright and colourful as the cover. Unfortunately for me, I felt like the characters were as cartoonish and flat as their counterparts on the cover. That didn’t mean I didn’t like them, it’s just that I found it too false and over the top; it was very much not for me.
Another reason I decided to not continue was the hero. I was sold a grumpy hero, and instead got a ray of sunshine… any character that dresses his dog in a new adorable outfit each day cannot be defined as grumpy. His lack of care for his own business, a diner, also didn’t sit well with me. In an economy where small businesses struggle someone being so contemptuous of their success just struck me as incredibly ungrateful. I was probably reading too much into what was supposed to be a cute character quirk. But, it bothered me.
So, although this book did have some laugh out loud funny moments those weren’t enough to keep me reading past the 30% mark. Some books you just don’t connect with and, for me, this was one of those books.
