“For a debut novel, this has a great atmosphere.”
~ Under the Covers
When I got this the thing that immediately made me want to read this debut novel was the fact that it’s a closed circle mystery. My love for reading started early on with a fascination with Agatha Christie novels and honestly that was my favorite part of them. There’s a set group of suspects and even better if it’s a locked room style.
DEATH IN THE FAMILY starts out with a man that goes missing but leaves behind a puddle of blood where he should’ve been sleeping. Presumably dealing with a murder instead of a disappearance, our lead detective on the case starts questioning the rest of the family members and close friends who are all gathered at the family’s island estate. And they are quickly all left stranded on the island due to a storm.
A few things that I think jump out about this book and why I may continue reading this story. For a debut novel, this has a great atmosphere. The island setting lent itself well to this but the investigation of the case along with giving us some information about our detective’s traumatic past kept a certain feel that I think is necessary to make this stories shine.
The thing that kept me from giving it a higher rating is simply the protagonist. I couldn’t really fully connect with her. Definitely towards the end it was getting there and since this series will continue featuring her I think there’s a lot of potential for character growth.
