THE ONE FOR YOU is the fourth and final book in the The Ones Who Got Away series. I’ve been anxiously anticipating this book because I’ve loved Kincaid’s character from the very beginning. This series follows a group of 4 women who are survivors of a school shooting and how that has affected their lives now many years later.
Kincaid lost her boyfriend during the shooting, the man she thought was The One. And she’s had a string of failed relationships since then because she doesn’t think that love will come twice for her. Ash was her childhood best friend. He was with her through the roughest times back then and was her only source of comfort. But after they both survived the shooting he left town to pursue his writing career and see the world. He comes back to town to finish writing a novel after breaking up with his fiance and has to face his feelings for Kincaid that he’s been hiding since they were kids.
There was something really sweet and endearing about this particular book. It was maybe less emotional and intense than some of the previous books but it still had a lot of heart. Ms. Loren has a way of crafting characters that you can’t help but open up your heart to. Ash and Kincaid were no different. I was rooting for them through this whole book. From Ash being the bookish hero with a side of extra spicy, and Kincaid who has a tough exterior but a vulnerable, mushy interior. The fact that they were best friends for most of their lives made this book endearing and their connection that much stronger.
If you haven’t read this series yet, you could read this book as a standalone. But why would you want to do that? This series is so unique and captivating and dealing with a very current and tough subject in a great way. Roni Loren is one of my all time favorite authors and I can’t wait to see what is coming next from her.
