Top Shelf Reads: May 2019

Each of us girls have very definite tastes here at Under the Covers. We know what we like and we get excited about sharing this with you. We can’t help but share when our favourite books are coming out and want to share the joy with as many people as we can. And this is one of the ways we want to do it. Each month we will give you our pick of the bunch, the cream of the crop, the top shelf books! Basically, the ones that we are just itching for you to get your hands on. The kind of books where the year wait is always worth it; where you may have drawn plans to go a little Kathy Bates, but with less sledgehammer action and more hot cups of tea and custard creams – we don’t want to scare the muse away after all. These are the books we are just dying for you to read next month!

Storm Cursed
by Patricia Briggs

BOOK INFO

Released: May 7th 2019
Series: Mercy Thompson #11

In this powerful entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, Mercy Thompson must face a deadly enemy to defend all she loves…

My name is Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman, and I am a car mechanic.

And a coyote shapeshifter.

And the mate of the Alpha of the Columbia Basin werewolf pack.

Even so, none of that would have gotten me into trouble if, a few months ago, I hadn’t stood upon a bridge and taken responsibility for the safety of the citizens who lived in our territory. It seemed like the thing to do at the time. It should have only involved hunting down killer goblins, zombie goats, and an occasional troll. Instead, our home was viewed as neutral ground, a place where humans would feel safe to come and treat with the fae.

The reality is that nothing and no one is safe. As generals and politicians face off with the Gray Lords of the fae, a storm is coming and her name is Death.

But we are pack, and we have given our word.

We will die to keep it.

I try not to go in to any book with pre-conceived expectations, be they good or bad. Mostly I fail pretty spectacularly at this, especially when it comes to series that I love. So, it’s safe to say I went into Storm Cursed with extremely high expectations. I’ve read so many excellent books in the Mercy Thompson series that it didn’t cross my mind that I wouldn’t love this one. And I did. Patricia Briggs is a fantastic writer. Her characters and the relationship between them evolve throughout the series, and not just her main characters, everyone in the Mercy-verse has a degree of development. Next, there’s the world, with each book our understanding grows and deepens as Briggs expertly furnishes us with more information. Finally, there is the story itself. It’s always an exciting and fast paced ride making these books hard to put down. Basically Patricia Briggs is a genius and if you aren’t reading her yet…why not?

Top Secret
by Elle Kennedy, Sarina Bowen

BOOK INFO

Released: May 7, 2019
Published by Self Published
Pages: 280

Bestselling authors Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy return with their first Male / Male romance in 3 years.

LobsterShorts, 21
Jock. Secretly a science geek. Hot AF.

LobsterShorts: So. Here goes. For her birthday, my girlfriend wants…a threesome.

SinnerThree: Then you’ve come to the right hookup app.

LobsterShorts: Have you done this sort of thing before? With another guy?

SinnerThree: All the time. I'm an equal opportunity player. You?

LobsterShorts: [crickets!]

SinnerThree, 21
Finance major. Secretly a male dancer. Hot AF.

SinnerThree: Well, I’m down if you are. My life is kind of a mess right now. School, work, family stress. Oh, and I live next door to the most annoying dude in the world. I need the distraction. Are you sure you want this?

LobsterShorts: I might want it a little more than I’m willing to admit.

SinnerThree: Hey, nothing wrong with pushing your boundaries...

LobsterShorts: Tell that to my control-freak father. Anyway. What if this threesome is awkward?

SinnerThree: Then it’s awkward. It’s not like we’ll ever have to see each other again. Right? Just promise you won’t fall in love with me.

LobsterShorts: Now wouldn’t that be life-changing...

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of both of these authors.  But when they collaborate, magic happens.  Their previous m/m romances brought us one of my favorite m/m couples and when I saw there was a new book coming out for them in the same genre I might’ve squealed.  There was also a lot for this book to live up to.  Let me just say this.  TOP SECRET is completely different from HIM but it’s just as addictive and endearing.  You can’t help but fall in love with these very different characters.  I was 100% swept up into how cute the romance was, how lovable both characters were, how their relationship progressed…. and lets face it, how sexy as hell it was.  This is yet another winner by this duo.

Smooth Moves
by Marie Harte

BOOK INFO

Released: May 28 2019
Series: Movin' On #2
Published by Sourcebooks Casablanca
Pages: 352

Ex-Marine Cash Griffith is a beacon for trouble. Working for the family moving company, he does his best to keep a low profile, but he can’t help finishing a fight someone else starts. There’s one person at work who annoys and baffles him. But if he even thought about taking her on, she’d put him down. Hard. Which is a real problem, because Cash wants nothing more than to tangle with sexy Jordan Fleming.

The ex-Army MP has her hands full with her new job and her rebellious teenage brother. Getting him through summer school is a chore. Figuring out what to do with her life now that she’s a civilian is disheartening. But one thing she lives for—doing battle with the obnoxious, arrogant, incredibly hot Marine at work.
Their battles turn into true camaraderie, then into something more. Helping each other out with family problems, Cash and Jordan learn to trust each other. One kiss leads to another, and friendship starts turning to love. But when dangerous secrets come to light, their bond will either break or strengthen into a future they both deserve.

Around this time of the year, I find myself always looking for a good Contemporary Romance to read. Luckily, Marie Harte has a new series called Movin’ On that has all the humor and heart that I love in my books. With veteran heroes and heady dose of sexiness, this book will definitely sweep you off your feet and make you fall in love!

I’m totally down with those picks. I’ve got Storm Cursed on the way, but I would definitely snag Top Secret and Smooth Moves.
