Welcome back to Under the Covers, Jaci. We are so excited about your new series, Brotherhood by Fire. HOT TO THE TOUCH is the first book and it’s about Jackson and Becks. Both of them have been through a lot in their lives and are survivors. What’s your favorite thing about each, and what do you think is their biggest weakness?
Thanks so much! I’m thrilled to be back to talk about my new series, Brotherhood by Fire.
I loved writing Jackson and Becks’ story. They have both been through a lot in their lives. Spending their formative years out on the streets wasn’t easy for either of them, but they both came through it with survival instincts and an appreciation for life that many people don’t have.
My favorite thing about Jackson is his love and protectiveness for his adoptive family. My favorite thing about Becks is her caring nature, her wish to give back to the homeless community where she came from, especially to the kids, so she can provide them some comfort.
Jackson’s biggest weakness is his inability to deal with his past. Becks’ biggest weakness is thinking she always has to do everything on her own.
I love stories about found families and in this case, the bond between the three boys started out in the streets and they managed to survive so much together. It’s strong and beautiful. How did this idea come to be and what’s your favorite thing about writing found families?
I think family is what you make of it, and it isn’t always about blood ties. You can truly make something beautiful from the people in your life who love and accept you for who you are, not where you came from. I’ve read some wonderful found family books, and I’ve seen multiple examples of it in my own life. I love the family I was born into. They’re amazing and I’m lucky to have them. And there also the people I love and consider family that I’ve known for years that I have close ties to. People who’ve known me better than anyone else. It’s easy to write about what you’ve personally experienced.
I’m extremely excited that you’ve gone the route of firefighters with this series because they are HOT (pun intended). Have you wanted to write about firefighters for a while? What kind of research did you have to do for this as opposed to your sports romances?
I have family and friends who are firefighters. I admire them greatly, as I admire all those who put their lives on the line to keep others safe.
I did a great deal of research on this series. I talked with firefighters who are on the job. They were wonderful in providing me detailed information on what it’s like out there, what kinds of calls they get and how to set up to work anything from a routine traffic accident to a major structure fire. There are also multiple places to find firefighting information on the Internet. I could spend hours watching YouTube videos lol.
I’m a very visual person so I have to ask. Do you have anyone in mind as inspiration for the three Donovan boys?
I don’t. I’m not the type of author who does visual boards for characters, using actors or models to create a certain type. The characters exist in my mind only, as I hope they will for my readers. That way when they’re reading, they can visualize what they think the Donovan guys look like. 😉
I was doing some digging through Amazon and ran across a Christmas novella you have coming up in October. I can’t resist your holiday stories and they are among my favorites and must read any time you have one out. What can you tell us about THE MATCHMAKER’S MISTLETOE MISSION and is this going to be a series of some sort?
I’m so happy you brought this up! THE MATCHMAKER’S MISTLETOE MISSION is a prequel novella to my new Boots and Bouquets contemporary romance series. The series is about three sisters, and it’s set at an Oklahoma vineyard that also provides wedding services. I’m so excited about this series. Weddings and wine—who doesn’t love that combination?
If another couple from any of your books could go on a double date with Jackson and Becks, who do you think it would be that would hit it off best with them and what would that look like?
I definitely think Tyler and Jenna from Taking A Shot from my Play by Play series. Jackson and Tyler are both pretty laid back and would talk sports and firefighting, and Becks and Jenna have that same snarky type of attitude and fun sense of humor. I think they’d all hit it off right away and would become best friends.
What’s currently on your to-read pile that you’re most anticipating to get to?
I’ve just started an ARC of Jill Shalvis’ The Lemon Sisters and it’s fabulous. I know—lucky me! I also just finished reading an advance copy of Andie J. Christopher’s Not The Girl You Marry and it was A-mazing! I highly recommend it.
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on the first single title in my Boots and Bouquets series that we discussed above. I’m having so much fun with it, and I can’t wait for my readers to dive into this new series. I hope they love it as much as I love writing it.
Thanks so much for sharing with us today!

Love burns white-hot in this first scorching romance in an all-new trilogy about a family of firefighters from the New York Times bestselling author of the Play-by-Play novels and the Hope series.
Firefighter Jackson Donovan doesn't look back--as a rule. So when his past comes roaring back to life in the form of not-so-damsel-in-distress Becks Benning, the last thing he wants to do is relive old times. No matter how tempting she makes it seem...
Now thanks to his two interfering brothers, Becks is living with them while she looks for a new place and tries to pick up the pieces of her tattoo business that went up in flames. Which means a grown up, smokin' hot Becks is in his house, sharing meals, and digging up old wounds. And despite his better judgement, the more time he spends with this smart, artistic, incredible woman the more he wants her in his bed--and his future.
Becks always had it bad for Jackson. Unfortunately for her, not much has changed--he's still honorable, hard-working, sexy as sin--and closed off. But there's more than one way to get to a man's heart and if Jackson doesn't want to recall old memories, she'll just have to help him make new ones. Because now that she's found Jackson again, she's not letting him go.
