If you thought we were only going to give you cookie-cutter historical romances, think again!  We recently came across a series that mixes sci fi and regency and we just had to know more.  Futuristic Regency romance!  The latest book in this series just released after years-long hiatus.

J.L. Langley

Welcome to Under the Covers! We are beyond excited to be talking to you today about historical romance and about the Sci-Regency series!

Thanks for having me. I’m happy to be here. I love historical romance!

I’m so intrigued by the concept of this series and the mash up of genres. Can you describe the series for us and tell us what we can expect?

The series is centered around a planet called Regelence and its royal family. It’s all the things I love about Regency romance with some pleasantries added in like indoor plumbing, electricity and, of course, computers. The series takes place in the future and is all about Regelence’s struggle with the Intergalactic Navy and their fight for their way of life.

You’ve just released DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS which is the 4th book in the series after several years hiatus. Was it difficult getting back into the world?

Not at all. I think probably because I do love the world so.

What did you miss the most?

Without a doubt, I missed the characters the most. The Townsends are such a fun family to write. They are so loving and supportive of one another, yet they do love to give one another a hard time.

What’s your favorite thing about special forces soldier Dalton and conservative politician Blaise?

I loved working with their opposite personalities by contrasting and comparing them. It was fun to watch them battle their differences, fall in love, and even work together on a common goal. They teach each other so much throughout the story, but in the end, they really aren’t as dissimilar as you would think.

How do you blend the historical and sci fi elements of your story?

That is a good question. I’ve never really thought about it; I just sort of do it. I try and take things I like from both genres. Honestly, I’d love to live in a place with such a blend. While I do love my technology, I feel that we sometimes rely on it too much nowadays. Oddly, with all the social media, I don’t feel like we are as social. I think in some ways the technology has made us lazy. I’d love to see more of a mix. For example, I love the easy storage of ebooks but there is just something about going to a library or a book store and interacting with other readers.

Do you have future plans for the series?

I plan on doing a story for each one of the Townsends for the series arc. After that? I’m not sure. I’m sort of playing it by ear.

What historical figure would you like to add to your book? Who would make a great hero or heroine?

Honestly, I had not even considered adding a historical figure to the series, but I do mention some, like Lord Byron.

What is the strangest thing you’ve ever had to research?

Oh goodness. There are so many strange things. My critique partners and I joke that we are probably on the FBI watch list with the things we’ve looked up for research. For this series, most of my research has been historical in nature, like English country houses and townhouses.

Who are 3 of your auto buy authors?

Julia Quinn, Tessa Dare, and Gaelen Foley.

If you could be reborn into any era, which would it be?

Oh wow! That is a hard one. As much as I love historical romance, I don’t think I could give up indoor plumbing. And as a Texan I have to have my air conditioning. It would be really neat to go visit other times as a time traveler though…as long as I got to come back here to the 21st century.

What are you currently working on and what can we expect from you next?

Currently I’m working on the next in the Sci-Regency series. It set on a planet called Skye, which is modeled after medieval Scotland. Think clans and men in kilts. And the first re-release of my With or Without series is coming up as well.

A Sci-Regency Novel: sequel to My Regelence Rake

Opposites don’t just attract... they sizzle.

A lusty special forces soldier who lives by his own set of rules, Dalton Fairfax decided long ago to stop wishing for his father’s love, and he found his calling. Now that he’s back home and between assignments, he finds himself at loose ends. When the opportunity arises to play bodyguard and help out his country, Dalton jumps at the chance. Not only does it keep him busy, but it just so happens that his charge is the man he saw on leave last month and hasn’t been able to get out of his head.

Heir to a dukedom and a conservative politician, Blaise Thompson strives to prove himself worthy of carrying on the family legacy as the next IN Councilman. However, his closest competitor keeps getting in the way and taking credit for Blaise’s ideas. Maintaining his stellar reputation isn’t easy to do while keeping his outrageous younger brother in line and foiling his rival’s personal attacks. He has no time for a guard and even less time for romance.

When a priceless antique goes missing, Blaise and Dalton discover that Regelence has larger problems than just IN plots. Now the only way to stop a scandal that threatens both of them is to compromise, and they are forced to confront the risk of losing everything… even each other.

About J.L. Langley

J.L. Langley said her first words at six months of age. By the time she was a year old, she was talking in complete sentences and, as most of her family and friends will tell you, she hasn’t shut up since. After becoming an accomplished motormouth, J.L. set out to master other avenues of self-expression, including art, and dance.

She attended the University of Texas, where she majored in art, and worked as a dance instructor on the side. Her love of artistic expression in dance landed her a career in which she taught and performed for over twenty-five years. After marriage to her junior high school sweetheart and the birth of their children, J.L. decided to try her hand at writing. To date, she has several successful novels and a handful of novellas to her credit.

She lives in Texas, where she was born and raised, with her real life hero, their rowdy two boys, two even rowdier German Shepherds and ten goldfish, one of which is named Jaws. When she’s not writing, she can usually be found with her nose in a book, appreciating the communication skills of other writers.
