Do you ever look at a series and promise yourself that you will read it…eventually? Well that’s how how Francesca and I (Suzanne) have been feeling about the In Death series by J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts). It’s been on both of our TBRs for so long and yet remained relatively untouched. The problem with much loved series like In Death is that it’s got a lot of hype. So many people love the books and all the characters. It’s a little daunting to take on the weight of that expectation. Also there’s the length! Have you seen how many books are in the series? It’s on book 48. That’s a lot of books to get through.
But, we aren’t going to try and get through all 48 books this year. Instead we are taking it slow and aim to read one book a month, getting us to book 12 by December. We will update you on our progress on social media as we read, in our wrap up videos at the end of the month and in a monthly post articulating our thoughts on the book.
This month we are tackling the third book in the series Immortal in Death.

What were your over all thoughts about this book?
Suzanne: I keep saying this but…I think this one might have been my favourite in the series so far. I thought every aspect of the story was perfect, from the relationships, both romantic and otherwise, to the thriller elements of the book. All combined it gives me a read that I literally could not tear myself away from.
Francesca: I kept thinking how much I love these characters. One of the things I always wondered about this series is how is it possible that a series following the same couple could continue strong for so long. And now I understand. Eve is one of my favorite heroines, but I also love Roarke and how well they complement each other. This book showed a lot more of that and for me that was the stellar part of the story. Also, giving us a good mystery to solve. But Eve+Roarke Forever!
The mystery aspect of the book, did it keep you hooked?
Suzanne: I like to think I am pretty good at figuring out who the evil doer is when I read thrillers and mysteries. With this one Robb kept me guess until the moment of reveal. Loved. It. It really gave an edge to this book, especially as Eve has a very personal stake in the outcome of the case. Of all the books, this one is the one that has kept me on the edge of my seat.
Francesca: It did! In this one the stakes were higher for Eve to get this figured out. I will admit I was fooled for most of the book. I had someone in mind that ended up being a close guess but not the truth. And it’s so silly of me to have gone that way because I also suspected the right person once or twice. Should’ve explored my gut feeling more. It did keep me hooked and manage to surprise me.
Eve and Roarke, thoughts and feelings!
Suzanne: In this book Eve and Roarke are getting married and the wedding is being arranged. Eve’s ambivalence towards the wedding is spot on. Her love for Roarke, even though she is still utterly bewildered by it, is rock solid but the wedding still terrifies her. It was at times both funny and emotional, especially in the light of the information that is revealed regarding Eve’s childhood.
Francesca: I think I addressed that a bit before, but I love these two. From the very beginning when it’s all about wedding planning and how hilarious that first bit was all the way through the more emotional ups and downs and how Roarke just knows when to push his alphaness and when Eve needs his softer side. They are perfect together.
Did you have a favourite scene in the book?
Suzanne: I know exactly what scene Francesca is going to pick…and it was a favourite of mine as well. But for me, I loved the opener in this book. Where Eve and Mavis are going for a dress fitting. One, because I think it really demonstrates Eve’s feelings about getting married, that kind of excited dread. And two because it is hilarious! This book overall, despite having some moments of levity, is quite dark. Such horrible truths are revealed and Eve is forced to take actions she hates. But, the opening scene showcases a lighter side of Eve and a great moment of female friendship.
Francesca: LOL yes I talked about that a bit before because it was such a hilarious scene but OMG THE GYM SCENE! I think it shows perfectly the balance of power between Eve and Roarke. They are both pretty alpha and intense but there’s nothing I love more than an alpha man who is not afraid to let his woman take the lead when she needs it. Roarke is everything! Plus that scene was incredibly hot.
Did you do audiobook, ebook or book?
Suzanne: Ebook of course, it allows me to highlight all my favourite passages.
Francesca: I started out with the audiobook but I had technical difficulties halfway through and switched to ebook.
How would you rate Immortal in Death?
Suzanne: 5 stars, I adored it!
Francesca: I also adored it but I think I’m going with 4.5
How are you feeling about starting the next book in the series Rapture in Death?
Suzanne: Excited! I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for Eve and Roarke
Francesca: I literally can’t wait!
