Welcome to Under the Covers, Elizabeth and congrats on the new series! Can you please tell us about what The Greycourt series will be about?
Thank you for having me!
My Greycourt series starts fifteen years after a tragedy that tears apart two aristocratic families. The Greycourt family’s eldest daughter, Aurelia, dies in mysterious circumstances on the night she was to elope with her fiancé. That fiancé is Ranulf de Moray who was suspected of murdering Aurelia. As a result he’s beaten nearly to death by Aurelia’s uncle, the Duke of Windemere. Flash forward fifteen years and Ranulf is now the Duke of Ayr, a recluse who has lost his right hand and the de Morays have all been shunned by society because the scandal.
But that’s not where the first book of the series starts. NOT THE DUKE’S DARLING is about Freya, Ranulf’s sister, who is a member of the Wise Women, an ancient secret society of women who work to help other women in Britain. Her hero is Christopher Renshaw, the Duke of Harlowe. He was a friend of Ranulf’s and was there the night he was beaten. When Freya meets him again, he’s wearing Ranulf’s signet ring…and she starts plotting revenge.
How many books can we expect in this series?
Tell us more about Freya, the heroine of NOT THE DUKE’S DARLING.
Freya is a spy for the Wise Women in London society and she takes her calling very seriously. She’s trying to stop a Parliamentary act that will hurt the Wise Women. She’s tough, strong, and not particularly trusting. She’s also lonely and a tiny bit naïve.
I’m always a big fan of your heroes. What would you say is your favorite characteristic of Christopher?
He’s thoughtful, which sounds like a strange characteristic of a hero, but he doesn’t just rush ahead angrily when he meets opposition. He’s able to see another person’s viewpoint, which enables him to argue more persuasively.
If you could be best friends with one person in your book, who would it be?
I’d like to be besties with Freya’s bestie, Messalina. She’s a society aristocrat, beautiful and elegant, but she has a sly sense of humor and the ability to let her hair down when she’s with friends.
Which of your characters was the easiest to write? And which was the most challenging?
I really enjoyed writing Messalina’s younger sister, Lucretia who has a mischievous bent. It’s always easiest to write secondary characters because they don’t matter as much to the book. I had the hardest time nailing Christopher’s introspection and bravery, but I’m pleased with the result.
Is there anything fun that’s happened to you or you’ve come across while doing research for a book?
Oh, of course! For this book I researched seventeenth and eighteenth witches and witch hunters (the bad guys think that the Wise Women are witches.) Many old buildings in Britain have carvings on the beams to ward away witches. They’re called witch marks (not to be confused with the marks that witch hunters looked for on the body of people they suspected of being a witch.) Witch marks on buildings could be interlocking circles or hash marks to confuse a spirit attempting to cross or follow the marks. VM was also used for the Virgin Mary.
Who are three romance authors who turn you into a fangirl?
Nalini Singh, K. J. Charles, and Carol Mortimer
What are your favorite romance tropes to read?
Snowed-in cabins and forced/arranged marriages!
What’s next for Elizabeth Hoyt?
Right now I’m working on book number two in the Greycourt series, WHEN A ROGUE MEETS HIS MATCH. The heroine is Freya’s bestie, Messalina and features a forced marriage. 😉

New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Hoyt brings us the first book in her sexy and sensual Greycourt Series!
Freya de Moray is many things: a member of the secret order of Wise Women, the daughter of disgraced nobility, and a chaperone living under an assumed name. What she is not is forgiving. So when the Duke of Harlowe--the man who destroyed her brother and led to the downfall of her family--appears at the country house party she's attending, she does what any Wise Woman would do: she starts planning her revenge.
Christopher Renshaw, the Duke of Harlowe, is being blackmailed. Intent on keeping his secrets safe, he agrees to attend a house party where he will put an end to this coercion once and for all. Until he recognizes Freya, masquerading amongst the party revelers, and realizes his troubles have just begun. Freya knows all about his sins. Sins he'd much rather forget. But she's also fiery, bold, and sensuous-a temptation he can't resist. When it becomes clear Freya is in grave danger, he'll risk everything to keep her safe. But first, Harlowe will have to earn Freya's trust-by whatever means necessary.
