Interview and Giveaway with Jeaniene Frost

The wait is finally over!  SHADES OF WICKED is here this week and we can’t be more excited for you all to read Ian’s story.  You may already know that we are huge fans of the Night Huntress world but in case you missed that, lets shout it from the rooftops again.  This is one of the best paranormal series ever and if you’re not reading it, you’re missing out on greatness!  We are so happy to share our interview with the author here today.

Welcome back to Under the Covers! Many readers are excited about the Night Rebel series! Please tell us what they can expect.

Thank you so much for having me back! I’m so happy to finally share Ian’s story with readers, and wait until they meet my heroine, Veritas! At first, this seems very much like an “opposites attract” pairing since Veritas is a Law Guardian and Ian is the ultimate rule breaker. But, once you dig past their surface differences, you see that Veritas and Ian have a lot in common. As for what readers can expect, allow me to quote from a recent BOOKLIST review: “Wild, magically-enhanced sex and bloody, bone-pulverizing battles.” How do you top THAT line for an expectation? Lol.

And so spot on!  😉  Ian has a massive following. Why do you think readers love his character so much? And what do YOU love about him most?

I never want to presume why readers like a character, but I can tell you that I love Ian because he’s a contrast in extremes. He’s funny yet deadly, irreverent to most but deeply loyal to a few, secretive about what matters while being a total exhibitionist about everything else, and above all else, completely unconcerned with what other people think about him. Writing Ian sometimes feels like taking my Freudian “id” out for a ride because he often does things that are horribly, hilariously inappropriate. But Ian has depths readers haven’t been able to see before this book, and I hope they love the new things they learn about him.

What can you tell us about Veritas character and how do you think she’ll surprise readers (without a spoiler of course!)?

I mentioned some of Ian’s secrets. Well, for every secret we learn about Ian, Veritas has a whopper of her own, too. In fact, so much of what Ian (and readers) think they know about Veritas from the brief glimpses they’ve gotten of her in previous books isn’t true. Yes, she’s a four-thousand-year-old Master vampire who became a Law Guardian – the second-highest position a vampire can achieve in my world – but that’s actually the most boring fact about Veritas. I wish I could say more, but it would spoiler things all over the place. The only thing I can say that readers of INTO THE FIRE (the final Night Prince book) already know is that Veritas can freeze time the way Dagon, the demon villain in this book, can. How a vampire can do that, and why Veritas has been keeping it a secret, is just one of the many things that will surprise readers about her.

How many books can we expect in this series?

Right now, I’m only promising two books because I suck at guessing how many books a series will consist of. Let me give you an example: I originally thought the Night Huntress series would only be two books. That turned out to be seven novels, two novellas, and a large Outtakes collection. I couldn’t guess the length of the Night Prince series, either. I only intended two books for that, too, and it turned into four novels. I’m writing book two in the Night Rebel series now, so at least I can promise there will be two novels. As to a third, possibly, and after that…I’m not even going to guess.

How does this series differ from the other books/series set in this world?

It has my usual blend of urban fantasy action combined with paranormal romance heat, but I also get to play with magic as a worldbuilding element in this book. I haven’t been able to do that as much in my other series, and it was really fun to open that door because magic is a wild card for vampires. It can negate even the strongest vampire’s abilities, which is why it’s been outlawed in my vampire world. But, like everything that’s illegal, some people do it anyway, so there’s a whole underworld my characters get pulled into.

What was your favorite thing about writing SHADES OF WICKED? And what was the hardest/easiest thing about it?

My favorite thing, and the easiest thing, was the dialog. Ian and Veritas cracked me up with the things they’d say. I’ve been posting some examples on Twitter and Facebook under the #SHADESOFWICKED and #QuoteOfTheDay hashtags. Here’s a taste:

Ian, on Veritas ordering him around: “Keep treating me like a dog and I’ll either hump your leg or bite you.”

Veritas, on Ian’s assertion that she’d soon be in his bed: “If your cock comes anywhere near me, I will rip it off.”

The hardest parts, as usual, are the battle scenes. They’re emotionally draining as well as technically complicated. Plus, I want the action to be vivid enough for readers to feel like they’re in the thick of it with the characters, but not so vivid that readers are squicked out. That’s a difficult balancing act.

Do you write by the seat of your pants, or do you carefully plot your stories? And when did you start thinking about how Ian’s story would play out?

I’m mostly a pantser. I usually start a novel knowing the beginning, a few scenes in the middle, and the end. Everything else comes to me as I write, not before I write. Plus, more often than not, I’ll get an idea while writing that completely changes the few things I did plan in advance. I can’t count the times I’ve had to say to my editor “You know that plot point I said I was going to write? It’s not happening. I’m doing [detail of new plot point] instead.” Fortunately, my editor has a lot of patience…and possibly an endless supply of liquor *winks*

As for how long I’ve been thinking about Ian’s story, it’s been years. I believe I made up my mind to write it in 2011, after I wrote Home For The Holidays, the novella originally published in The Bite Before Christmas anthology. Ian had a large role in that story, and discovering some of his secrets plus seeing what he’d risk for those he cared for solidified my idea that he could rise to be a hero in his own books one day.

What distracts you the most when you’re trying to write?

Probably the same things that distract everyone else in their jobs – family issues, other work responsibilities, personal stresses, a never-ending To Do list, and other things that make up our lives. Oh, and in my case, two dogs who run into my office demanding pets every few hours. There’s NO reasoning with determined, spoiled canines.

What’s next for Jeaniene Frost?

As mentioned, I’m writing the second Night Rebel book, WICKED BITE, right now. It’s slated to release sometime during summer in 2019, and it picks up immediately after the events in SHADES OF WICKED. After that, we’ll see. I might move on to other characters, or I might not be done with Ian and Veritas yet :).

Thanks so much for sharing with us today!

Once again, thank you so much for having me!
