“Deliciously tall, grey males with horns and wings? Sign this girl up.”
~ Under the Covers
When Kate wakes up, she expects to be at home. On Earth. Instead, she is surrounded by slimy…aliens and a group of women as frightened and half-dressed as she is. When things look like they are going from bad to worse she finds herself saved by a horned and winged…alien, who only seems to want to protect her.
Are gargoyles and gargoyle-like aliens a thing at the moment? I have read a few books recently with them in. I’m loving it. Deliciously tall, grey males with horns and wings? Sign this girl up. Add in Renneck, our hero, being all honourable, protective and cutely besotted and I was a goner. Needless to say I really enjoyed this book.
I especially enjoyed the first part of the book where we get to know Renneck and Kate, as well as the rest of the crew and human women. Although it wasn’t quite insta-love Renneck does immediately feel drawn and protective of Kate. Kate is also pretty fascinated by the winged and horned alien who can’t take his eyes off of her. The romance between them sweet and as the book progressed so did the heat level.
The second part of the book took place off-ship and on an uninhabited world. This is where I felt the book lost its way. There was a massive lull where nothing seems to happen, which slowed down the pace of the book. It was designed, I suspect, to show Renneck and Kate finally becoming a cohesive couple. However, this dragged on for too long and there were parts where I was bored. There were so many interesting aspects of the story that Lauren had set up, like what was happening with the other characters and the search for Renneck’s people that this abrupt stop in momentum was jarring.
However, overall this was a fantastic debut from Tracy Lauren. It had a good romance with plenty of other characters with hero and heroine potential. I can’t wait to see what Lauren will do next with this series.
