Keeping It Reel: August 2018

Take a seat, grab some popcorn and an ice refreshing beverage and lets Netflix and chill. No you dirty minded individuals not like that, we want to share with you some recommendations about what we are watching and listening to. For those times when you just need to put your book down and plonk in front of the TV and relax. Whether it’s on Netflix, Amazon Prime, regular TV channels or a podcast, we are going to let you know what shows, films and podcasts we’ve been enjoying and share the love.

What a month!  I feel like I was binging ALL THE THINGS in August.  That also means I read less, but I just felt like that’s what I needed.  I finished season 3 and 4 of FLASH and I’m all caught up and ready for the new season to kick off in October.  I still enjoy it less than Arrow but it’s a good companion show to watch.  I don’t think I’ll be diving into the other related shows, SUPERGIRL and LEGENDS OF TOMORROW.  Something about those doesn’t resonate with me.

After that I found EL CHAPO on Netflix and with the trial starting here in NY in August it felt appropriate to binge seasons 1 & 2 of that.  And then I found IRON FIST, also on Netflix.  I watched most of season 1 of that show and let me tell you… I don’t know why I kept going. LOL  I found him a bit stupid and not impressive at all as a main character.  But it’s one of those things where you can’t help but want to keep watching the trainwreck.

One of the most anticipated things I had on my schedule to watch was the movie of TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE.  This was on Netflix and it’s the adaptation of the book by the same name by Jenny Han.  I’ve only read book 1, but I absolutely adored the movie.  It was soooooo cute!  It’s entirely possible that I enjoyed the movie more than the book?  But it’s made me itch to keep reading the series!

And lastly, I watched the new Jack Ryan series on Amazon Prime.  OMG it was so good!!!!  I can’t wait for another season to come. 😉

There are two things that got me super excited this month. The first thing was the start of my annual obsession: The Great British Bake Off. It’s a British baking competition where the contestants are set three challenges each week; the signature, the technical and the showstopper. The best baker gets crowned Star Baker, the worst leaves the competition. It’s pretty standard in format, but I love it. It’s so charmingly British. All the contestants are lovely to one another, even helping each other out when needed. There’s the occasionally risqué joke and mild innuendo from the presenters, odd couple Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig. It’s magical. I love it.

The second programme that I have enjoyed this month is Brooklyn Nine Nine. I know I am a little late to the party and it’s been out for a while now! I started watching it on a whim and after two days I had finished the first series and was rolling on to the second. It’s so hilarious, all the characters have their own quirks and together they have created a great comedic twist on the typical cop drama.

I did some Netflix binge watching this past month so I caught up on THOR:RAGNAROK, LOGAN, FLAVORS OF YOUTH and the last season of SHERLOCK. I would definitely recommend them all if you haven’t watched them already. Flavors of Youth was a bit different than I was expecting mainly because it has multiple storylines, but it’s a great anime if you’re looking for something thought-provoking. I also continued watched HOT BLOOD DANCE CREW and LET GO OF MY BABY.

Shortly after last month’s post of Keeping It Reel, DH and I finished Immortals. Wonderful series and I was a bit sad that it ended. So, now we are in limbo again. We tried a couple of shows already, but nothing has stuck. We’ve tried Izombie; that was a flop. Well, I liked it, but DH did not =(. We tried Arrow, another flop. I couldn’t deal with the endless daddy issues and the plot just cycled around. We also tried Lost Girl and Bitten, another no go. Oh, we tried Super Natural. While the first Ep was exciting, I couldn’t get myself to read the next one. I’m just too chicken sh*t and can’t handle ghosts. Yeah, that white lady was stuck in my head for a few days. So, for the time being, I am in search of a good show to binge on. If you have any suggestions…

I still rarely watch anything but cooking and home shows. I did discover Boomtown that’s a renovation show set in Arizona and they renovate historic homes in boomtowns.

Not much. However, teen witch was on a few times so I absolutely had to watch that!

Some great show picks ladies!!! I’m not much of a netflix chick, but my niece has me watching Arrested development and a anime called Black butler! Both are pretty good! Shared on all my socials!!

I really enjoyed To All the Boys I Loved Before. It was cute. Recently, finished season 2 of GLOW. It’s not a series for the family but a great girls night series!

Still not watching anything
