Each of us girls have very definite tastes here at Under the Covers. We know what we like and we get excited about sharing this with you. We can’t help but share when our favourite books are coming out and want to share the joy with as many people as we can. And this is one of the ways we want to do it. Each month we will give you our pick of the bunch, the cream of the crop, the top shelf books! Basically, the ones that we are just itching for you to get your hands on. The kind of books where the year wait is always worth it; where you may have drawn plans to go a little Kathy Bates, but with less sledgehammer action and more hot cups of tea and custard creams – we don’t want to scare the muse away after all. These are the books we are just dying for you to read next month!

Series: Promises #5
Published by Harlequin Spice
New York Times bestselling author Sarah McCarty returns to her Promise series with this next western historical romance.
As Jackson Montgomery heads across the last mountain range toward home after collecting on a particularly difficult bounty, he isn't looking forward to anything but a good meal, a stiff drink and maybe some female companionship. But as he passes the Bentley place, he can't resist taking a gander at who'd been fool enough to buy the disaster Bentley had created. He expects to see a tenderfoot for sure, because only a tenderfoot would buy a place as poorly placed and poorly built as Bentley's Folly.
He's not far off.
Mimi Banfield thought she was done for when she fell into the well filled with rattlers. Her rescuer has all the survival skills she's missing, and he's exactly the man needed to fix up her new place. As the newly minted guardian for three orphaned children, she could certainly use a hand. Jackson is equally intrigued by Mimi as he is by Mimi's offer of a job. He agrees to stay on, not knowing that she has a deadly secret. By the time she confesses, it may just be too late for salvation.
Whenever I need a sexy historical western romance, Sarah McCarty is my girl. Her alpha male cowboys know exactly how to rev up a girls engine. It’s been a while since we have had a release in this series so it was great to see some of the previous heroes and heroines who I have grown to love. In Promises Decide, which I believe is the last in the Promises series, we also get a more laid back hero. Laid back, but still determined to claim the stubborn woman and three children that he now views as his. This was a nice end to the series adn I can’t wait to see what McCarty brings out next.

Series: Stalking Jack the Ripper #3
Published by Jimmy Patterson
In this third installment in the #1 bestselling Stalking Jack the Ripper series, a luxurious ocean liner becomes a floating prison of scandal, madness, and horror when passengers are murdered one by one…with nowhere to run from the killer. .
Audrey Rose Wadsworth and her partner-in-crime-investigation, Thomas Cresswell, are en route to New York to help solve another blood-soaked mystery. Embarking on a week-long voyage across the Atlantic on the opulent RMS Etruria, they’re delighted to discover a traveling troupe of circus performers, fortune tellers, and a certain charismatic young escape artist entertaining the first-class passengers nightly.
But then, privileged young women begin to go missing without explanation, and a series of brutal slayings shocks the entire ship. The strange and disturbing influence of the Moonlight Carnival pervades the decks as the murders grow ever more freakish, with nowhere to escape except the unforgiving sea. It’s up to Audrey Rose and Thomas to piece together the gruesome investigation as even more passengers die before reaching their destination. But with clues to the next victim pointing to someone she loves, can Audrey Rose unravel the mystery before the killer’s horrifying finale?
It’s probably no surprise to hear me talking about this series because I’ve become a huge fan of Audrey Rose and Thomas Creswell. ESCAPING FROM HOUDINI was a dark and twisty tale that had me glued to the pages and not wanting to put it down. It’s packed full of suspense and … yes, dead bodies turning up. The fact that our characters are basically stuck at sea with a scary traveling circus performing every night just adds to the heart-pounding element of this story. I have heard that the final book maybe has some changes from this ARC copy I read, so I’m not sure what things will be different (I’m dying to find out though). But from what I read I will say this… I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT. There’s a lot more romance and there’s also some trouble along the way. I was waiting any second to feel like punching Audrey Rose in the face and it never came. If you are looking for a good and fun mystery and a twist to the legendary character of Houdini then be sure to check this one out.

Series: Hard Play #3
Published by TKA Distribution
Nayna Sharma agreed to an arranged marriage in the hope it would heal the fractures in her beloved family… only to realize too late that a traditional marriage is her personal nightmare. Panicked, she throws caution to the winds, puts on the tiniest dress she can find, and ends up in the arms of a tall, rough-edged hunk of a man who has abs of steel—and who she manages to mortally insult between one kiss and the next.
Abandoned as a child, then adopted into a loving family, Raj Sen believes in tradition, in continuity. Some might call him stiff and old-fashioned, but he knows what he wants—and it’s a life defined by rules… yet he can’t stop thinking about the infuriating and sexy woman who kissed him in the moonlight then disappeared. When his parents spring an introduction on him, the last woman he expects is her. Beautiful. Maddening. A rulebreaker in the making.
He’s all wrong for her. She’s all wrong for him. And love is about to make rebels of them both.
Nalini Singh does it again! It really should come as no surprise because she’s amazing but I really enjoyed this one. In fact, I’m now ready to say that this series is my fave of her contemporary ones (and I’m lumping in book 2 of the Rock Kiss series here as well because he’s the brother of the hero from book 1 here). OK, lets not make this confusing. REBEL HARD features both main characters from Indian descent. Both are at a point where they are willing to let their families take over (sort of) and arrange their marriage. I’m always curious about the subject of arranged marriages in the modern world and I think Ms. Singh has done it so great! I think this will be an enjoyable read for anyone. Plus, the hero works in construction and isn’t scared to get a little dirty and both the hero and heroine are virgins. What more can you ask for? This was perfect. Swoony as I was expecting it to be.

Series: Hope #8
Josie Barnes has always craved a sense of home. She's found that in Hope, Oklahoma--she bought a house, has a new job as an English teacher at Hope High, she's made wonderful friends, and she's taking in stray animals that no one else wants. Now she's flirting with fellow teacher and hot high school football coach Zach Powers. But he's almost too good to be true, and Josie learned long ago not to trust in the too-good-to-be-true, because it has always let her down.
A former pro football player, Zach had to pull back when a career-ending knee injury forced him to rethink his future. Now he's happy calling plays as Coach. If he could just get Josie Barnes to stop benching his players for their poor grades, life would be perfect. Instead, she drives him crazy as the stern teacher at school and the sexy woman of his dreams outside of the classroom. He knows she's been hurt in the past, but he wants to be that guy she can trust.
The one thing Josie has never been able to count on is the people closest to her. But Zach intends to show her that what they have between them is a textbook case of love.
To be honest, I had a bit of a tough time picking a Top Shelf Read for this month. Although I’ve read quite a few new releases that I was excited about, not many of them wowed me. However, I’m happy to say that Jaci Burton delivers yet another sinfully sweet story in the Hope series. I really enjoy this series for its softer and charming vibe compared to her other series. The characters are ones that we have seen before so if you have been following this series, I’m sure you’ll be happy to see the HEA of this book.

Series: The Wildes of Birch Bay #4
Published by Montlake Romance
Sometimes dreams change…and sometimes it takes a dream reader to make it happen.
When Jaden Wilde’s girlfriend turns down his marriage proposal just months before he receives his master’s in counseling, he’s convinced that it’s cold feet. Until he learns that her no came at the advice of a new age “dream reader.” But Arsula’s hardly the woo-woo hippie his scholarly mind imagined. She’s charming, smart, and uncannily perceptive. And before long, he’s drawn to her—despite his ongoing skepticism for how her practice works.
Arsula’s intuitions led her to Birch Bay not to guide Jaden’s girlfriend—but to guide him to his best life possible. As the odd one out in an unsupportive family, Arsula can relate to the struggle to find one’s path, and she wants to see Jaden with the woman of his dreams. Although she’s cautious of being the rebound girl, what she’s starting to feel for him is too real to ignore.
When Jaden’s own volatile family issues come to a head and his doubts are made resoundingly clear, Arsula worries she’s misread the signs. Maybe they’re all wrong for each other. Maybe he should be with his ex. She’s supported him, but if he can’t believe in her, how will they ever find out if they’re truly meant to be?
I’ve really only had a chance to read one book for the month of September and it’s certainly one I would recommend. Kim Law always manages to capture my heart in one way or the other and did so again with Montana Dreams. This book is a story of an unlikely match, but as fate would have it, they are as perfect as can be. There’s plenty of dislike, and tension between Ursula and Jaden that I wasn’t sure if I would like them. But they did make me laugh and halfway through the book they end up winning my heart. This book is a sweet, funny, and a quick read. If you like contemporary reads with good humor, you need to try this out.
