Take a seat, grab some popcorn and an ice refreshing beverage and lets Netflix and chill. No you dirty minded individuals not like that, we want to share with you some recommendations about what we are watching and listening to. For those times when you just need to put your book down and plonk in front of the TV and relax. Whether it’s on Netflix, Amazon Prime, regular TV channels or a podcast, we are going to let you know what shows, films and podcasts we’ve been enjoying and share the love.
I feel like I did more watching than reading in June, what is wrong with me!!! But, you know, spending time with the family tends to pull me away from reading so there’s that. I felt a bit lost this month though because I finished up binging the last two seasons of Arrow (seasons 5 and 6) and now I don’t know what to do with myself. I can’t wait for the show to come back in October. I can now say I’m super addicted and fangirling over Arrow. And if it’s any endorsement, so is the rest of my family. I can even overlook Oliver’s emo annoying behavior because OMG did he get on my nerves with that. Am I alone?
So continuing from that I thought I would start Flash because … interconnected series and all that. I only watched the first 4 episodes of Season 1 and I’m just not as into this one as I was with Arrow. Barry is nice but I’m not consumed by his character like I am Oliver. And the show is just not as good in my opinion. I think this will be a much slower watching (no binging will be happening). But probably ok for when I need a superhero fix.
I’m not much on listening to podcasts but I found two romance book related ones this month and did a little listening. If you are looking for some podcasts that talk about romance books you may want to check out Infatuated Podcast and One True Pairing Podcast
My plans were to get to the movies as well (because… Jurassic Park!) but that didn’t happen. However, I watched some that I’ve been meaning to for a long time! First up, I did a re-watch of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST because *sigh* I love that movie. And then I watched COCO because I can’t remember what behind the scenes show I watched about the making of Coco and all the work and research etc that went into it. I LOVED IT! OMG that was such a good story. And then, finally, I watched LOVE, SIMON. I haven’t read the book and I was planning on not reading the book and just watching the movie. But after watching the movie and falling head over heels in love with it, hard!, I may have to rectify that decision. I think I want to read this because if they movie was that good then the book has to be better. Regardless of where you stand on reading or not reading, I highly suggest you watch that movie, it was excellent.
Besides all that, June was all about the World Cup for me! I’ll admit I was a bit lost as to who to root for because my precious Italy didn’t even qualify. So after getting over the embarrassment that the stupid team didn’t even go, I just decided to watch some soccer without any investment in the outcome. And it’s been nice. While I can’t say this has been a stellar year of amazing soccer because a lot of it has been quite frankly underwhelming and sub-par, maybe even cringe-worthy. I still enjoyed a lot of it. Here’s comes my unpopular opinion. I totally celebrated when Argentina and Portugal went home because if I have to hear one more time the names Messi or Ronaldo I will scream. These are two of the players in history that I dislike more than anything. I don’t think they’re as good as people play them out to be and it annoys me to no end any time a commentator has to say their names like ohh look they’re going to do something impressive. THEY NEVER DO! And the strangest thing I’ll say about my feelings for this World Cup. I think out of everyone there Brazil deserves to win it. As an Italian, this is such a strange thing for me to say because Brazil is sort of like our arch-nemesis. But there you have it. They started out a bit rocky but have come out impressing me.
I’ve really had rack my brains to try and think what I have been watching this month! I couldn’t think of anything. So, instead I will turn to my trusty podcasts.
This month I listening to all three series of The Black Tapes podcast. LOVED IT. Any opportunity I had I would have it playing. It’s a mockumentary about the Strand Institute and it’s founder Richard Strand who has a million dollar prize for anyone who can show him a genuine supernatural event. He is a complete unbeliever in the paranormal and debunks his cases. Or atleast most of them. The ones he hasn’t been able to find an explanation for yet are called the black tapes. As each case is looked at in detail, connections are made and our host begins to wonder….are these cases connected? And who exactly is Dr Richard Strand? It’s a finished story so you can listen to all three series and know there is an ending.
If you do listen though let me know! I need to talk about the ending with you!
The other podcast I have enjoyed is Alice isn’t Dead. This is another story podcast, with each episode being a new chapter. This podcast tells the story of a woman’s search for her wife Alice. How it draws her into a weird and dangerous world of America’s highways and diners. Mixing conspiracies and the supernatural this is an almost surreal story and utterly compelling. I admit, it probably isn’t for everyone, but it is worth giving it a try. The narrator in this is fantastic and the story had me completely tangled in its web.
If you have any podcast recommendations for me, fire away! Whether they are supernatural story telling like these two, true crime, psychology/economics or anything else! If you love to listen to it, let me know what it is.
I watched a lot of great shows this month. I finished season two of Kamisama Kiss. It’s not as good as the first season, but it was nice to see more development with some of the secondary characters. I’ve also been obsessed with Let Go of My Baby (rough translation), which has been super cute! And the other show that I really like Unnie’s Slam Dunk season two. It turned out to be much more emotional than I thought it would be so that was a nice surprise. I will probably pace myself next time though. Too many tears! I also started What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim! I’m only on the first episode but man, I’m already hooked! I will have to binge watch to catch up! Lastly, I went to see Got7 on the Eyes On You world tour and I have to say, it was so freaking amazing! SO worth going if you can see them perform in person. It makes me love them so much more!
I’m super excited to tell you that I’ve found a new show to binge on and DH is enjoying just as much. We watching The Originals. If you haven’t started this show yet, you must! This is an excellent version of Vampire Diaries (a spin-off of the show…I did not know this until now). Not to mention better actors. The three main male actors, Joseph Morgan as Klaus, Daniel Gillies as Elija, and Charles Michael Davis as Marcel are fine specimens of the male species. If there’s any reason to watch this show, well just look them up.
The story is set in New Orleans about the fight for power between vampires, wolves, and witches. If you like to read PNR, specifically vampires, you will love this one. Plenty of action, magic, sexy vamps, wolves, and family saga drama. Though I wish it was a little sexier, but I can deal. We’re just starting season 2. I’m hoping it stays as interesting until the present season which apparently the last of the show. Bummer. I believe there are five seasons to date.
What are you all watching/listening to?
