We are so excited to have Lara Adrian with us today. We’ve been fans of her books and writing for soo many years and she just started a new series. Can’t wait to dive more into it! Lets hear it from Lara herself now.
Welcome to Under the Covers, Lara! We are so excited about your new Hunter Legacy series! What can you tell us about this Midnight Breed spinoff?
Thank you for inviting me to chat with you! I’m excited about the Hunter Legacy series too! I’ve been thinking about doing this Midnight Breed spinoff series for several years, so I’m really having a blast writing these new books. Hunter Legacy revolves around the Hunter program, which was operated out of an underground lab where the Big Bad from the Midnight Breed series—a madman named Dragos—had been creating his own Breed army of emotionless assassins, called Hunters. These assassins were born and raised in the lab and kept obedient via lethal ultraviolet collars that would detonate if they tried to escape or rebelled against Dragos or their trainers. It was brutal and there was absolutely no escape . . . until the Order began going after Dragos and remotely deactivated the collars of his Hunters. From that point forward, the once-enslaved Hunters were now set free to make their way in the world. In Hunter Legacy, it’s 20 years after that pivotal moment, and I get to play what-if with some of these wonderfully tortured, uber alpha Breed males. 😉
I’m very interested in Asher! Could you tell us more about him? What’s your favorite thing about him?
I love so much about Asher. He has a very dark past in the Hunter program, and we pick up 20 years after he gained his freedom. I love that he has this awful, shameful past that’s dogged him all his life, but because of one act of kindness, he was able to grab hold of a little bit of hope. When BORN OF DARKNESS opens, Asher thinks he’s doing just fine, but then he meets another tortured soul in Naomi and eventually realizes that even though he’s getting by, maybe he needs something more than that.
What would you say is the biggest difference that this series has from the Midnight Breed series?
The biggest difference between the two series is the fact that while Midnight Breed has a long-running, overarching storyline, Hunter Legacy books are completely standalone and can be read and enjoyed in any order.
How many books can we expect in this series?
Hunter Legacy is open-ended, and I hope to continue writing books in this series for as long as I have interesting characters to explore and as long as readers want to continue reading them!
When you first started writing the Midnight Breed series, did you have an idea of the large scope of the world you were creating? And what has been your key in keeping the series as fresh and new with each new installment?
No, I had NO idea! If I had, I probably would have been too intimidated to start it! The longest series I’d ever written before Midnight Breed was three books long, so the fact that we are now 11 years in and 15 books plus a handful of novellas in the series absolutely mind-blowing to me! I think the key to writing this series—the key for me in writing any book, really—is to try to make each story different from the last. If I ever feel like I’m repeating myself, or going through the motions, it will be time to hang it up.
Do you have any writing rituals or routine?
No real rituals or routines, other than when I start writing a book, I write every day until it’s done. Taking time off takes me out of the story, and it takes me that much longer to get back into the groove.
Are there any characters you’ve written that are closer to your heart? And why?
I don’t have favorites at all, but I have to say that Lucan Thorne is probably the most important character I’ve ever written because he was the start of the Midnight Breed series and without him, I never would have written all of the adventures that came after him.
If you could BE any character for a day, who would you love to trade places with?
Haha! You know, as much as I love my paranormal worlds, it’s kind of a scary place to live in with everything I put my characters through! So, I would have to say I’d want to be Avery Ross from my 100 Series because she gets to spend time in glamourous places with Dominic Baine, the hot alpha billionaire who adores her.
Tell us three things you can’t leave home without?
I’m super boring. My cell phone, my laptop, and comfy PJs.
What’s next for Lara Adrian?
I have a few things in the pipeline for the rest of 2018—and you’re hearing it first! 😉 I’m writing my next contemporary romantic suspense now, RUN TO YOU, which is a spinoff of my 100 Series that follows friends of Dominic Baine and Avery Ross. I’ve actually got a few standalones in that series that I’ll be working on. After that, I’ll be writing Book 2 in the Hunter Legacy series, HOUR OF DARKNESS. And then this fall I will be writing the next Midnight Breed novel, BREAK THE DAY. Keeping busy!
So many exciting things coming up! We can’t wait. Thank you so much for sharing with us today!
Thank you for having me! <3
