It should come as no surprise if you’ve been following our blog for any length of time that we love the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. Release weeks for this series are kind of a big deal around here. THE THIEF is out this week so we thought it was the perfect time to celebrate our love affair with the Brothers and the Warden. To kick things off we have none other than the creator of all this magic herself. She basically needs no introduction but in case you have been living under a rock, the Queen of Paranormal Romance and of Alpha Males is here today so lets give her a warm welcome to UTC and get ready for her next book to be out in the world!
Welcome to a Under the Covers! As longtime fans of your books, we are beyond excited to have you here today and to talk about your latest release THE THIEF.
Thank you so much for having me!
Let’s start with something personal! Tell us five things about yourself that we wouldn’t normally know.
Ugh. I am going to fail this question big time. I am utterly boring. All I do is work and run. I am one of those single dimensional idiots who is totally structured, uninteresting, and about as vivacious as a toaster oven.
Assail has been an intriguing character since he appeared in the series. What was your favorite part about finally getting to write his book?
I loved seeing him and Sola get their relationship sorted. When she left Caldwell, it was for very good reasons, but I always knew her destiny was with Assail. It’s great to take them to their HEA!
All your heroines in this series are strong in their own ways. What would you say is Sola’s greatest strength?
She doesn’t rely on anyone but herself. Which is also a weakness. However, Sola is the sole support and protector of her little family unit with her grandmother, and that is a lot of responsibility given the dangerous life she led before she left Caldie. Assail needs someone who is as strong as he is!
With the Brotherhood and the Band of Bastards uniting, what was the biggest obstacle you had while writing this book?
Too many people who readers want to see and I want to show! There are so many storylines going on at this point, I have to be careful not to widen the scope of the books so far that they lose their narrative punch and focus. At the same time, I want to give folks a complete picture of the world.
We all loved Dearest Ivie, will Ivie and Silas (and the missing brother!) prove relevant to The Thief or future Black Dagger Brotherhood books?
YES!! Heh, heh, heh. What I love about the BDB world is that it doubles back on itself. I never know which way things are going to go or how the connections work. But it’s just like any community- people have hidden ties and relationships. It’s rich and complicated!
Your books pack a heavy emotional punch, it’s now a requisite to have a box of tissues at the ready before we start reading. How do you find writing such heavy scenes and writing that fine line of tragic misery and romance?
I’m just the recorder. My job is to take the pictures in my head and describe them so that readers can be in those moments. I’m not a very emotional person, and I think that’s the only reason I can get through the drafting. If I were, I’d be a mess through all the different stages. Some of these stories are TOUGH!
We have seen some of the original brothers such as Rhage, Wrath, Butch and V have either a new book centered on them or a large story line devoted to them in either your Black Dagger Legacy or Brotherhood series. Can we expect any more of the original brothers (and when I say original brothers I am hoping for Phury!) to make a reappearance?
Absolutely! The Brothers are such a huge part of their world that everyone in it is influenced or touched by them in some way. Also, their stories are not static. After they get their HEA, things still evolve, change, deepen for them, both with their partners and in their lives.
What can we expect next from J.R. Ward?
A new series about firefighters! CONSUMED, the first in the series, is out 10/2/18, and introduces a whole new cast of alpha males and powerful women! If you love passion, drama and a good twist and turn, I hope you’ll give it a try!
Thank you so much for answering our questions and spending some time here with us today. Can’t wait for everyone to read THE THIEF.
Thank you again for having me!

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood #16
New enemies rise and desire burns in the next thrilling novel of the #1 New York Times bestselling paranormal romance series the Black Dagger Brotherhood.
Sola Morte, former cat burglar and safecracker, has given up her old life on the wrong side of the law. On the run from a drug lord’s family, she is lying low far from Caldwell, keeping her nose clean and her beloved grandmother safe. Her heart, though, is back up north, with the only man who has ever gotten through her defenses: Assail, son of Assail, who never meant to fall in love—and certainly not with a human woman. But they have no future, and not just because she doesn’t know he is a vampire, but because he is not about to stop dealing arms to the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Fate, however, has other plans for them. When Assail falls into a coma and lingers on the verge of death, his cousins seek out Sola and beg her to give him a reason to live. The last thing she wants is a return to her past, but how can she leave him to die?
As a lethal new enemy of the vampires shows its face, and the Brotherhood needs Assail back on his feet, Sola finds herself not only a target, but a mission-critical force in a war she doesn’t understand. And when Assail’s truth comes out, will she run from the horror . . . or follow her heart into the arms of the male who loves her more than life itself?
