Please help us in welcoming Melinda Leigh on to Under the Covers today. Melinda writes some fantastic thrillers that we have fallen in love with recently and we’ve invited her on so we can pick her brains!
Welcome to Under the Covers! As this is your first time here and we love getting to know authors a bit more, tell us five things about yourself that we wouldn’t normally know.
Ice cream = words.
My brain doesn’t function without coffee.
I’d rather watch Game of Thrones than sports.
I often walk on my treadmill while I write.
I talk to my dogs as if they were people.
We would love to know more about BONES DON’T LIE, the latest in the Morgan Dane series! What has been your inspiration for this series and what can readers expect from this installment?
When I wrote Morgan Dane as a secondary character in the Scarlet Falls series, I knew I had to tell her story. She deserved a happily ever after. I was writing Seconds to Live when I decided to give Morgan her own series. I also wanted to explore a slower-to-evolve romantic relationship. I enjoy changing things up in my writing.
How would you describe Morgan and Lance respectively, in three words each?
Morgan: protective, determined, intelligent
Lance: honorable, loyal, strong
When writing your thrillers, do you have to do a lot of research? What’s the strangest thing you have ever had to look into?
Most of my books require a great deal of research on the legal system and police procedure. But the Midnight series has led to my most varied research topics, including human sacrifice, Viking burial customs, artifact storage requirements, and museum operations.
If you weren’t a writer, what would your ideal career be?
I have two rescue dogs, and I’m an avid animal lover. So, I’d have to work with animals. Being a dog trainer would be fun and useful. Maybe I could teach my own dogs to behave. 😉
Aside from the characters you’ve created, tell us 2 or 3 of your all time favorite fictional characters.
What a difficult question! There are so many great stories and characters. Off the top of my head, Princess Leia was the first to make a solid impression. She was everything a hero is supposed to be. Tough, smart, independent, and honorable. A few of my current favorite characters are Lagertha Lothbrok (Vikings), Brienne of Tarth (Game of Thrones) and Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones). I also love Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden.
What books do you love to read for fun and what was the last one you loved?
While I am working on a book, I do not read my own genre. Lately, I’ve been on a fantasy binge. I’m just finishing the audiobooks of the fabulous Kingfountain Series by Jeff Wheeler. Next up: The Hundredth Queen Series by Emily R. King.
What are you working on next?
I just finished writing Morgan Dane’s fourth book, What I’ve Done. Next, I’ll be working on a novella for the brand-new Widow’s Island Series, which I’m co-writing with Kendra Elliot. The novella is tentatively titled A Bone to Pick and is scheduled to release next fall.
Thanks so much for sharing with us today!
Thanks for having me.
