Top Shelf Reads: March 2018

Each of us girls have very definite tastes here at Under the Covers. We know what we like and we get excited about sharing this with you. We can’t help but share when our favourite books are coming out and want to share the joy with as many people as we can. And this is one of the ways we want to do it. Each month we will give you our pick of the bunch, the cream of the crop, the top shelf books! Basically, the ones that we are just itching for you to get your hands on. The kind of books where the year wait is always worth it; where you may have drawn plans to go a little Kathy Bates, but with less sledgehammer action and more hot cups of tea and custard creams – we don’t want to scare the muse away after all. These are the books we are just dying for you to read next month!

I need a few moments to collect myself…I just can’t believe it…the final book…I don’t know whether to feel happy or sad. I think I’ll settle for a little of both. The Knitting in the City series has been one of my favourites since I picked up Neanderthal Seeks Human, the first in the series a few weeks after its release…on a whim. Which, just proved to me that acting on a whim isn’t necessarily a bad thing as this has turned into one of my favourite ever contemporary romance series. Reid throws in some unforgettable heroines, some unusual heroes and then infuses it with warmth and intelligence, leaving you with a quirky, hilarious and thoughtful romance book. I love it. And now, I must bid it adieu and just be thankful for the memories and all the rereads that will inevitably follow.

[new-release title=”Eight Simple Rules for Dating a Dragon” author=”Kerrelyn Sparks”]

This series just keeps delivering amazing stories.  I’ve been talking about it for a while but if you are looking for a refreshing take on fantasy romance, then look no further!  While you could read these as standalone, I think they’re best read in order.  This installment is so adorable!  There are certain things I expect when reading a dragon book and Ms. Sparks managed to hit those while making this such a unique, engaging and truly unputdownable book!  I adored the characters and the storyline kept me turning the pages.  While this is a much slower burn type romance than the two previous ones, and the smexy factor is way down (be warned!) this was still a solid addition that stayed true to character and opened up the world even more.  This is one of those few fantasy series where I think the author has such a clear idea of what the world they’ve created looks like and how it works that you, as the reader, are completely transported to it.

I actually have three top reads for March and they all release on the same day so instead of agonizing and trying to pick between them all, I’ve just gone with all of them. Two of the three releases are Urban Fantasy. The first is BURN BRIGHT by Patricia Briggs. This is another great installment to the Alpha Omega series but if you aren’t caught up with the Mercy Thompson series, I suggest reading that one first. The other UF is LAKE SILENCE by Anne Bishop. This book marks a change in the series as we have a new narrator. The heroine is fierce and funny, a nice contrast to the previous one so I think it’s a great way to bring something new to the series. And lastly, Laura Childs has PLUM TEA CRAZY, the next fantastic installment in the Tea Shop Mysteries. This book was written perfectly and I really can’t find any flaws in it at all. It’s truly a great read from beginning to end.

I can’t wait for lake silence!

I’m trying to catch up on the Kerrelyn Sparks series before Eight Simple Rules comes out. I’m really enjoying that world. Burn Bright is another good one. It seemed to fly by when I read it.
