Top Shelf Reads: January 2018

Each of us girls have very definite tastes here at Under the Covers. We know what we like and we get excited about sharing this with you. We can’t help but share when our favourite books are coming out and want to share the joy with as many people as we can. And this is one of the ways we want to do it. Each month we will give you our pick of the bunch, the cream of the crop, the top shelf books! Basically, the ones that we are just itching for you to get your hands on. The kind of books where the year wait is always worth it; where you may have drawn plans to go a little Kathy Bates, but with less sledgehammer action and more hot cups of tea and custard creams – we don’t want to scare the muse away after all. These are the books we are just dying for you to read next month!

On her seventeenth birthday, Megan of Chaumont discovers she’ll be sold as a bride to the brutish Volodane family—within hours. Her father grants only that she may choose which one of the ruthless, grasping lord's three sons she weds:

~ Rolf, the eldest: stern, ambitious, and loyal?
~ Sebastian, the second son: sympathetic, sly, and rebellious?
~ Or Kai, the youngest: bitter, brooding, and proud?

As shy, horrified Megan flees the welcome dinner for her in-laws-to-be, she finds an enchanted mirror that will display how her life unrolls with each man, as if she were living it out in a breath. But there is no smooth “happily ever after” in her choices.

Deaths and honors, joys and agonies, intrigues and escapes await her in a remote, ramshackle keep, where these rough but complex men reveal one side and then another of their jagged characters—and bring forth new aspects of Megan, too. But the decisions of one teenaged marriage-pawn reverberate much farther than any of them have guessed . . .

I’ve started 2018 off with a bang! I really loved Hendee’s YA Fantasy Through a Dark Glass. It was such an interesting idea, 17 year old Megan has a choice of three brothers to marry and just before she has to pick, a magical mirror appears which shows her the consequences of her choice. Her choice of brother has dramatically different consequences for not only her own happiness, but the brothers themselves and the kingdom as a whole. Once Megan has been shown her future with each brother she then has to decide. As soon as she has made her decision the memories from the mirror disappear. Although this is part of series, each story is a standalone and I loved seeing how drastically each decision affected not only Megan, but everything around her. I loved it, and although it was fairly easy to decipher who she would choose, I loved watching each choice as it unfolded. If you want a YA fantasy that’s interesting but not heavy, with a dash of romance and intrigue you have to give Through a Dark Glass a try.

What is this life?!?!  Again this month I have two recommendations and I just couldn’t bring myself to narrow this down to one.  The struggle is real. 😉  You NEED these two on your January reading lists, trust me.

Twelve years ago, tragedy struck the senior class of Long Acre High School. Only a small number of students survived, a group the media dubbed as The Ones Who Got Away.

Now, web designer Liv Arias, along with the rest of the survivors, have returned to the small Texas town to tell their stories for a documentary. Which means Liv seeing former star-athlete and old flame Finn Dorsey. A lot happened between them that night and Liv is ready to end their decade-long riff and move on. But when her attempt at closure turns into a steamy kiss, moving on proves much more difficult than either of them thought...

The premise of this series is unique and heartbreaking.  It follows a group of survivors from a mass shooting at a high school prom, hence the title.  In this first book we have the goth rebel girl, daughter of a landscaper from the wrong side of the tracks, who was then secretly dating the star athlete from a well to do family and all around popular guy.  Finn brought a different girl to prom and is getting a few minutes away from everyone to spend with Liv in the supply closet when the shooting starts and he leaves Liv there to go protect the other girl.  Now twelve years later, a documentary brings all the survivors back into town and they have to face each other and some of the promises they made to themselves all those years ago.  Also, all that unfinished business between Liv and Finn resurfaces. THIS BOOK!  It’s my last 5 star read of the year, so by the time you’ll be reading it in January it should be your first.  It’s so intense and emotional.  Roni Loren digs deep and makes you feel right along with her characters.  And I was pleasantly surprised to still see quite a bit of that signature smexyness I’ve come to expect from Ms. Loren, even if a little toned down to fit outside of the erotic romance genre.  Basically, just get this book.  I can’t say enough good things about it.  It’s unique, it’ll make you feel and swoon.  One of my favorite reads by this author and that’s saying something since I just love all of her stuff.

Released: January 9th 2018
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Series: Black Dagger Legacy #3

A vampire aristocrat, Peyton is well aware of his duty to his bloodline: mate with an appropriate female of his class and carry on his family’s traditions. And he thought he’d found his perfect match—until she fell in love with someone else. Yet when his split-second decision in a battle with the enemy endangers the life of another trainee, Peyton has to face the idea that his future, and his heart, actually lie with another.

Novo, as a female in the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training program, feels like she has to prove herself to everybody—and she has no interest in being distracted by falling in love. But when Peyton proves to be so much more than a rich playboy, she is forced to confront the tragedy that has broken her soul and closed her off from love.

As the two grapple with Novo’s past and Peyton’s present, another couple must contend with an erotic connection that is unparalleled—and potentially scandalous. Saxton, who has had his heart broken, discovers in himself a deep-seated attraction to Ruhn, a new member of the household. But will the other male explore the connection? Or will he close his mind and his heart to what could be true love . . . and cost Saxton everything?

I was both excited and hesitant to read this book.  The last Black Dagger Brotherhood book left a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth and I was a little worried that we would have to address all the issues that were brought up there since that’s what we did in the previous book in the Legacy series.  First, rest assured that this book is not picking up where THE CHOSEN left off.  It simply follows Peyton and Novo with a side story of Ruhn and Saxton.  It was deliciously simple.  I actually thought those two stories where the perfect fit to pair together into one book because, while they are such different characters and on completely different paths, at the core their romance felt a lot alike.  Tentative, intense, healing and new.  I’ve been all for Peyton and Novo since the beginning and I cannot be happier right now with what we got.  I adored both characters and their romance was just perfection.  I don’t want to say much, although I do have a small complaint that some things felt like they’ve happened before in another book and I got some sense of deja vu.  Maybe that’s what stopped me from giving this a full 5 stars.  The big surprise in this book for me was how much I liked Ruhn and all his different layers.  He’s a contradiction in many ways.  So innocent and tentative, soft and careful.  But there’s a whole other side of him that he struggles with.  That broken side of him that makes him a little less refined and a bit more dangerous.  I think J.R. Ward delivered on my expectations of this book and I may go as far as saying that so far in the Legacy series, Novo and Peyton may be my faves.  And I hope you all enjoy them too.

Ace mechanic Lou Cortez has always had a way with the ladies, so he can't understand why lovely florist Josephine -Joey- Reeves won't give him the time of day.

Joey knows all about mistakes. After getting pregnant at fifteen, she's spent the past nine years building a life for her and her son. This sexy mechanic is one misstep she's not going to make. But the more time she spends with Lou, the hotter things get. Soon Joey's left with a choice: keep things casual, or reveal all to Lou and hope he accepts her-and her son-for who they are.

COLLISON COURSE by Marie Harte is one of my most anticipated reads. I always look forward to these fun and sexy books but I was especially excited for Lou Cortez’s book. Uber sexy and charming, this book totally captures his personality to a tee. Harte delivers a fantastic romance with some really nice sizzling sex scenes too. I loved the combination of sweet and sexy in this book, showing that Harte can write it all! This book will definitely warm you up for the upcoming winter months!
