The best books are those that stay with you and nothing stays with you more than a character you fall in love with. Whether it’s because you admire something about them, seen them overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles or that they just make you smile every time you think of them, it isn’t a coincidences that our favourite characters appear in our favourite books list. So, we’ve put together a list of the characters that we have had on our mind all through out 2017 and undoubtedly for many more years to come.
Connor ‘Mad’ Rogan & Nevada Baylor from the Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews
The Hidden Legacy series is one of my favourites and there are two major reasons for this: Mad Rogan and Nevada Baylor. With Nevada they incorporated everything I like in a heroine, brave, principled, tough, compassionate and intelligent. She may not be the strongest person in the room, but she is smart and brave enough that she somehow manages to limp away to fight another day. And fight she will if she believes it is the right thing to do or anyone amongst her quirky family members are threatened.
As for Mad Rogan…is he mad? A little. But mostly he is focussed, deadly and powerful. He will mostly leave you alone as long as you don’t rattle him or go after anyone he considers his. That includes employees, friends and now Nevada Baylor. Much like Nevada I viewed him as a dragon, lethal and other with a deadly bite. Together they are one of my favourite couples and the last two books in the series, White Hot and Wildfire, which were released this year are amongst my best reads of 2017.
Gwen Proctor from the Stillhouse Lake series by Rachel Caine
My poor Gwen! That woman has had it TOUGH. But, instead of crumbling she just got tougher. On the run for being the unsuspecting wife of serial killer Gwen has to hide from those who think, wrongly, that she had something to do with her ex-husband’s crimes. From those sending her your standard hate mail, to those threatening not just her life, but that of her children. All whilst being taunted by her ex-husband who seems determined to make her his next victim, even from behind bars. You can’t help but admire Gwen, she desperately wants to protect her children from all the hate and create a normal life even if it seems impossible. You have to love that kind of determination as well as the total bad ass make over she had to give herself to survive. This year she has definitely become one of my favourite heroines.
Valentin from Silver Silence by Nalini Singh
Can I add a character just for being so damn adorable? Welp, I think I just did! Valentin is the hero of Silver Silence the first book in the Psy-Changeling Trinity. He is also a bear shifter, but not just ANY bear shifter, but the Alpha. However, despite being a fierce and deadly predator…he’s also darn cute. And adorable. And likes cuddles. Singh once again proves that she knows exactly how to write a hero that not only is the heroine going to fall in love with, but the reader will to.
Gabriel St. Vincent from Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas
Mercy Thompson from the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs
Countless times over the course of the series, I have been impressed with her growth and progress. But with the release of the latest book, I am once again blown away with the strength that this heroine has. Her quiet strength is respectable and I just love how she continues to show her poise even in times of distress. She’s definitely a heroine that everyone can emulate!
Branwen the Awful from Bring the Heat by G.A. Aiken
Possibly my fave heroine this year, Branwen the Awful simply cracks me up. I love how carefree and badass she is. Her personality is so out there and I just love how unapologetic she is about everything. A lot of heroines these days are too cautious whereas Branwen couldn’t give two fucks about it all.
Gavin Donnigan from Just the Thing by Marie Harte
All the Donnigans are super sexy but there’s something about Gavin that immediately made him my favorite. He’s incredibly confident, but he’s never been cocky. He speaks his mind, but it never cross the line either. He truly is something special and I think it’s impossible for readers not to fall in love with him. He’s the epitome of sexiness and I freaking love him!
Vlad Tepesh from the Night Prince series by Jeaniene Frost
Evelyn Hugo from The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Released: June 13th 2017
Published by Atria Books
From Taylor Jenkins Reid comes an unforgettable and sweeping novel about one classic film actress’s relentless rise to the top—the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine.
Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?
Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.
Summoned to Evelyn’s Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn’s life unfolds through the decades—revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love—Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn’s story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.
Filled with emotional insight and written with Reid’s signature talent, this is a fascinating journey through the splendor of Old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it takes—to face the truth.
Gin from The Bourbon Kings series by J.R. Ward
Thomas Cresswell from the Stalking Jack the Ripper series by Kerri Maniscalco
Damon ‘Preacher’ Fox from Undeserving by Madeline Sheehan
Charley Davidson from Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones
I’m going to have to pick Charley from Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson series. Not to say that Charley has not been a favorite character from before, because she is, but with the last installment, Charley just about blew my mind. Her character is one of the strongest, most compassionate, funniest, loveable, and so easy to connect to. Not to mention her addiction with coffee. With the recent turn of events in the last installment, Charley just proved how unselfish she is, and how she loves unconditionally. She would do anything for her loved ones. I can say all these things but it just doesn’t do her justice. There’s so much more to her…and that is why she is one of my fave characters.
