Shifters by Rachel Vincent
If you’re a fan of Urban Fantasy, then the Shifters series by Rachel Vincent is essential reading. It has everything that you love about UF, a kick ass (stubborn) heroine, an interesting and surprisingly gritty new world to explore, lots of action, drama and a dash of romance. It’s packed full of some fantastic stuff.
I started this series late, it had already finished by the time I had started reading it, in fact I had all the books collection dust on my book shelf. And, when I started reading I got warned of a few things; that the first two books were duds, that their is a love triangle and that the heroine was a little trying. So, before you all run off and start reading this series I want to put some of these fears to rest.
One, I disagree that the first two books are duds. I really liked them, yes they are slower than the last four in the series, but Vincent has a world to build. If she had just dove into the action with no explanation, nothing would have made sense and the rich and interesting setting she created wouldn’t have been so fantastic. The second point, yes their is a love triangle, some people hate this, some people love it. Personally I am a hater and it is one of the few things I wasn’t too keen on in this book, mainly because it is obviously what’s going to happen. However, it certainly works to ratchet the tension up in this series and you can see the heroine has some genuinely hard choices to make throughout the series. The last point Faythe, the heroine has a lot to deal with. She is a woman in a mans world and if she doesn’t want to spend her life locked into a life she hates, she has to be aggressive, stubborn and work twice as hard to prove her worth.
So, if you are after a quality UF full of shifter politics, action and romance then you need to give this a try! And, if you do love it…it’s not entire over, Vincent has done a spin off of this series featuring some of the characters you get to know and love in Shifters.
