Interview and Giveaway with Donna Grant

Welcome back to Under the Covers, Donna! We’re excited to talk to you about your new series, The Kindred. Can you share a bit about the mythology behind this series?

Thanks for having me back! It’s always great to be here.

I’m so excited to talk about The Kindred. I’ve long been in love with anything Celtic, and I’ve always been drawn to the Norse, so I combined the two. They have many similarities, which made it easy to have both cultures have such an impact on my witch Hunters.

As for the witches, since not all of them will be villains, I needed something big that incorporated more than just one person. So, I looked to the world of witches. The answer was right there – covens.

How did the inspiration for The Kindred come about?

For several years I’ve wanted to do another historical paranormal series, but I wanted it to be different than what I’ve done previously. I was tossing ideas around with a friend about wanting the stories to be heroine driven and for them to be badass – all in the medieval period. I don’t even remember what it was she said, but the idea was suddenly there – Witch Hunters.

You’re quite known for your expert world building. What was your biggest focus when creating this brand new world for this series?

I get this question a lot, and I really wish I had a succinct reply. The great thing about writing paranormal is there are no boxes except the ones the writer creates. Anything can happen if you have the right reasons. And once you set something up in your world, you have to make sure to keep it the same.

Since I normally have my heroes or heroines (or both) be the paranormal element in a series, I was going about this differently. My heroines weren’t witches, but they had to be able to fight them and live. My earlier books were all set in the medieval time period because I love it, so I went back to that and used that as my basis. It would limit all characters in some aspects, but they are all living in duel worlds, which allow the women to shake off the confines of that time period and be themselves.

What can longtime fans of your work expect from this new series?

My world building, strong characters, deep emotions, and, of course, my sexy scenes.

Can you tell us more about Braith?

Oh, Braith. I just loved writing him. He is in a very dark place when we meet him. He doesn’t care about his lands or title. He just wants revenge for the killing of his ward and heir. When he meets Leoma, he’s shocked and intrigued by her. And also attracted to her.

I love that he didn’t try to hold her back or tell her she couldn’t do something simply because she was a woman. It was the fact she was a warrior that appealed to him, that she could hold her own in any fight. He wanted to learn from her, which surprised Leoma. He brought out the best in her, and she in him. It’s what makes them such an amazing couple.

Leoma has a very strong personality. What would you say is her greatest strength? What is her weakness?

She is very strong. Out of all my characters, I saw her first. She is bold and a little reckless, but she knows her limits, and she will do anything to protect innocents.

I think her greatest strength is her ability to recognize what she can and can’t do and work around that to win against the Coven. As for her greatest weakness, I think it’s those she loves. She will do anything for them.

Do you have a set vision for how many books will be in this new series?

I began with EVERKIN in January, which is a really short story to introduce how the Hunters came to be. It’s backstory that would have weighed down a book. And I got to expand on those characters.

But I always knew there would be 5 full books in the series – and a chance at another short story at the end.

What’s your favorite thing about writing completely fictional worlds and creatures?

That I can do anything. That I’m only hampered by my imagination. I give myself the freedom to do whatever the story calls for, and some really cool things can happen. For instance, the Varroki. This group of witches police their own and have been fighting the Coven for hundreds of years. They have their own set of rules, and they completely intrigue me. I love the characters, and they’re coming to be major players in the books.

Do you have a favorite paranormal creature and why?

Lol. Oh, yes. Dragons, of course. I had wanted to write dragons for so, so many years and kept being told no. Then, I get asked to spin-off my Dark Sword/Dark Warrior world, and I immediately said dragons. To my utter delight, my publisher agreed and the Dragon Kings were born. They are by far my favorite characters.

With the holidays getting closer, what are some of your holiday traditions?

It will be a bit different this year because of the flood from Hurricane Harvey. My parents are living out of a travel trailer since their house was completely destroyed. My house is still a disaster area without half my walls, no doors, and hardly any furniture. But I’m still doing Thanksgiving here. I have new appliances, so I can cook. Thanksgiving won’t be our normal spread, but at least we can all be together.

For Christmas, we normally spend Christmas Eve at my parents and then Christmas Day everyone comes here where we have gumbo (Cajun tradition) for lunch. Then we head to the movies.

What are you working on next?

I just finished COWBOY ON MY MIND, the second book in my Heart of Texas series. After revisions on that and edits on the 6th Reaper book, DARK ALPHA’S HUNGER, I start the 14th book in the Dragon King series the week of Thanksgiving.

Thanks so much for sharing with us today!

Thanks for having me. It’s always a pleasure. Follow the magic!
