Sports Romance: Sarah Mayberry and Sarina Bowen

Our Favorite Sports Romances

I think it’s fair to say a lot of us love reading contemporary romances that center around sports, don’t we?  We have our favorite series/authors/sports and generally these books will leave you with a smile on your face.  NFL season is just getting started and maybe you’re feeling that itch to pick up a sports themed book wo we thought it would be great to pick author’s brains and ask them what’s THEIR favorite sports romances and maybe give you something new to read or simply a peak into their reading tastes.  This week it’s all about author recommendations here at Under the Covers and you’ll have daily opportunities to enter our week-long giveaway!

Kicking things off today we have new author duo Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry (new as a duo, but we’ve all read and love them before, right???) and here’s what they recommend.

Sarina’s Picks

Yes! This topic is the best thing ever. I always have time for a sports romance. Did you know that my co-author Sarah Mayberry wrote a bullriding book this year? Tanner is a whole lot of fun, and I learned a lot about just how sporty bullriding really is. Also, Sarah recommended Lark O’Neal’s Extreme to me, which is about a female snowboarder! Love it when the heroines are the competitors.

Lately I’ve been loving Avon Gale’s LGBT hockey books, starting with Breakaway. She writes about scruffy minor league teams in the American south and they are divine. Then there’s Santino Hassell’s new one, Illegal Contact, a football story! I know nothing of football but I loved it to death.

One more football pick: Downed is my favorite the Jen Frederick series. (And does she have the best titles or what?)

Sarah’s Picks

I’m with Sarina – there is always time for a sports romance. The most recent one I read was Sarina and Elle Kennedy’s excellent Stay. It gave me all the feels, including a chest ache, which is my gold standard for being emotionally invested in a story. I also really enjoyed Melanie Scott’s New York Saints baseball series – a fantastic group of really hot heroes and complex heroines. But I think my all time favourite sports romance will probably always be See Jane Score by Rachel Gibson. It’s funny, super hot, sweet and touching. The hero has a lucky horse shoe tattooed around his belly-button!! *fans self* Need I say more?

The most beautiful man I've ever seen is the one who can ruin everything...

The first time I lay eyes on Callan Walker, I know he’ll be trouble. With his smug grin, hot Aussie accent and thousand dollar shoes, he’s just the kind of rich guy who always gets what he wants.

And he wants two things: a night of sin, and my cooperation as he outmaneuvers his powerful mother to take control of his uncle’s estate.

I can’t afford either one. I’m the only thing standing between my little sister and the foster care system. He may have money and charm on his side, but I have something even more powerful -- pure desperation. This temp job at his mother’s company can become a full time job for me. It has to.

But when Callan’s eyes rake over my body, sometimes I forget my obligations. His piercing gaze finds the fun, optimistic girl I used to be and not the tired person I’ve become.

And it works--if only for a moment. Our night together was a mistake. I can't afford to get sucked into his high-powered family’s treachery. But the closer I get to Callan, the more layers I find beneath those expensive clothes. Though I can’t forget this is temporary. He’s temporary. I have too much to lose.

Too bad my foolish heart didn’t get the memo...

About Sarina Bowen

Sarina Bowen writes steamy, angsty contemporary romance from Vermont's Green Mountains. (Her ancestors began logging and farming Vermont during the 18th century. These were rugged, outdoor types without benefit of a laptop or a good latte. It boggles the mind.)

Sarina enjoys skiing, skating and good food. She lives in Windsor County, Vermont, with her family, eight chickens and too much ski gear and hockey equipment.

About Sarah Mayberry

Sarah Mayberry lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her partner of nearly twenty years (who has recently become her husband!). When she's not in her pajamas eating peanut butter sandwiches and typing away madly on her latest story, she enjoys reading, cooking, sleeping, pilates, going to the movies and shopping. Not necessarily in that order!

Some of Sarah's favorite authors are Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Rachel Gibson, Karina Bliss, Mary Balogh, Julie James, Sherry Thomas, Meredith Duran, and Loretta Chase. Her favorite movie is When Harry Met Sally, although she is also very fond of His Girl Friday and Something About Mary.

Im not a huge sports fan in general but i have read several books about foot and hockey and i loved them

I’m definitely a hockey gal…I especially love the books in Avon Gale’s series that deal with the Spitfires team, Jeff Adams’ HAT TRICK series, Bowen/Kennedy’s HIM (though US is also quite good), Riley Shane’s IN THE PENALTY BOX, and Isa K’s HOW TO QUIT PLAYING HOCKEY. Even though SEE JANE SCORE is not one of my favorites (Jane seemed a little superficial and WAY too easily squicked–uncut guys are gross, Jane, really?), I’d be willing to try a different Rachel Gibson book someday.
