Happy Labor Day for those of you celebrating! We are excited to have Diana Rowland here with us today to talk about her latest release WHITE TRASH ZOMBIE UNCHAINED, out tomorrow September 5! If you haven’t read her series yet, what are you waiting for?
Hi Diana, and welcome to Under the Covers. For readers that are new to the series, how would you summarize it in 140 characters or less?
Angel is a high school dropout, felon, and addict. But when she gets turned into a zombie, she has to grow up fast or fall apart for good.
How would you say Angel has grown over the course of the series?
She started off as a loser in everyone’s eyes, including her own. Throughout the series, she faced obstacles and adversity, overcoming them in her own special Angel way. Soon enough, others began to see more in her than she could see in herself. It was a long and convoluted personal journey, but by the end of Unchained, she has shed the loser label and embraced belief in her potential.
What is your favorite moment in WHITE TRASH ZOMBIE UNCHAINED?
Oh dear. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I definitely have a favorite moment. Let’s just say that it’s when Angel takes a leap of faith in order to remove the thorn in her side.
Tell us one thing about Angel in this book that stood out to you the most.
Her vulnerability and humanity in the face of overwhelming odds—even as she continues to stand up and fight for what she believes in.
Your covers feature amazing artwork! Do you have a favorite?
How could I possibly have a favorite when every cover has been so excellent?? Dan Dos Santos has hit it out of the park for every single book in this series. I’m the luckiest author EVER to have such an amazing artist working on my books!
That said, the cover for the very first book in the series, My Life as a White Trash Zombie, is the one nearest and dearest to my heart. The look is iconic and eye-catching, and I’ve lost count of the number of people who’ve told me they bought the book because of the cover!
If you could see your series come to life on the screen, who do you see in any of the roles?
I honestly have no idea. Sorry! I’m not really the type to mentally “cast” my books. I have my own image and sense of who the characters are, as do the readers. I could probably come up with a list of actors who look like the characters, but that doesn’t mean they could necessarily become the characters and bring them to life.
What are your writing rituals?
I’m not sure I have rituals per se. To me, that implies that I’d be unable to work unless I performed said rituals. I do have work habits and routine, but even they change according to circumstance and schedule. Every book has been unique and has required different thing from me, whether it be time management, work environment, or plotting and writing style. I have issues with my hands and shoulders, and so I’ve grown more careful about ergonomics and have changed my methodology. I rent office space away from my house, which not only keeps me from getting distracted by pesky things such as housework, but it gives me a place where no one will interrupt me. (Or move or touch my stuff!) But whether you call it ritual or habit or whatever, it’s all about keeping the creativity flowing and yourself sane. 😉
What’s the last book you read that kept you up all night?
It’s been a long time since any book has kept me up all night—mostly because I can’t stay awake that long! However, High Stakes: A Wild Cards Novel (edited by George R.R. Martin) kept me up until around 2 a.m. Does that count?
Absolutely counts! What are you working on next?
My next/current project is Rise of the Demon, the ninth and final book in my Kara Gillian series.
Thanks so much for sharing with us today!

Angel Crawford has finally pulled herself together (literally!) after her disastrous dismemberment on Mardi Gras. She’s putting the pieces of her life back in order and is ready to tackle whatever the future holds.
Too bad the future is a nasty bitch. There’s a new kind of zombie in town: mindless shamblers, infectious and ravenous.
With the threat of a full-blown shambler pandemic looming, and a loved one stricken, Angel and the “real” zombies scramble to find a cure. Yet when Angel uncovers the true reason the plague is spreading so quickly, she adds “no-holds-barred revenge” to her to-do list.
Angel is busting her ass dealing with shambling hordes, zombie gators, government jerks, and way too many mosquitos, but this white trash chick ain’t giving up.
Good thing, since the fate of the world is resting on her undead shoulders.
